BBC Report

Henman joins BBC Wimbledon team

Britain's most successful open era player Tim Henman will join BBC Sport's team of experts for coverage of this year's Wimbledon Championships. "I'm delighted to be joining the BBC team this year," said the 33-year-old former British number one, who retired as a competitor in September 2007. "It's exciting for me to return to Wimbledon in a non-playing capacity." He reached number four in the world in 2002 and will work as a commentator and studio analyst from 23 June to 6 July. BBC TV executive producer of Wimbledon Paul Davies added: "Tim was an incredibly popular player and the success, drama and passion he experienced at Wimbledon has created a unique connection with both the Championship and British tennis fans. "Returning to SW19 with the BBC team seems the perfect fit and his on-court experience will add a fascinating dimension to our coverage. "We hope this will be the start of a successful partnership between Tim and the BBC." Henman won 11 ATP career titles and reached four Wimbledon semi-finals in five years between 1998 and 2002.

You beat me to it, SG!

Great news btw, I jsut knew that they'd appoint him, I'm sure he'll do a good job, I've heard that he's got a pretty good sense of humour :ok:

Lex - April 10, 2008 11:56 AM (GMT)
I wonder if he'll follow Sue Barker and Gary Lineker's success with the beeb?

No reason not to I guess, I think he'll come across well

Good on ya Tim :)

Tenez - April 10, 2008 12:25 PM (GMT)
Yeah ba noone can bea' John Loyd in the entertainmen' business!

Pebs - April 10, 2008 12:34 PM (GMT)

I had thought this might happen - no doubt 606 is alive with 'but he is soooo boring' - or at least, it would have been once upon a time.

anyway, I love listening to Tim - he has got a good sense of humour and can add quite a bit of insight I am sure - I hope they stick him in a box with Boris and Mac - I love listening to them the most for Wimbers

Scotsguy - April 10, 2008 12:37 PM (GMT)
No instead on 606 we are being encouraged to predict the women's RG winner before the clay season  I did try and give my opinion though...

I remeber folks on the BBC saying he'd be crap at commentary. I'm nto 100% convinced as to hwo good he'd be, but I am delighted that he is in the team so that us Tim fans who are sad about his reitrement can still have him aroudn at Wimby. :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

Duchess - April 10, 2008 03:46 PM (GMT)
I had a soft spot for Timmah (trying to say it like the South Park character) when he played. I think he might be a good commentator-he certainly knows the game, and I like British accents. :giggle: :D

dl04 - April 10, 2008 03:47 PM (GMT)

Oh I like Greg, I don't think dl does though

BIG-TODGER - April 10, 2008 05:41 PM (GMT)
Tim's essentially a nice guy, but his monotone voice and matter of fact demeanour suggest less than exciting commentary-expressing i imagine the gamut of emotions from A to B. Still only time will tell.
Greg is ok-as long as he's allowed to stick with the facts-anything amounting to a characterful analysis and he's floundering.
McEnroe best ex player turned commentator-always interesting, if a little provocative.

Then there's Virginia Wade, the vocal equivalent of a dry Victoria sandwich

Good on ya Tim :)

I can see your way of thinking.

Gary Lineker came in as the nicey nicey specialist alongside Hansen in the 90's on Match of the Day and had Des out of his seat within a few years.... I can see Tim coming in and taking Sue's seat in the same way.

Nice One Tim :ok:

I like Ginny, I also like Victoria sandwich:lol:

Mac is my fave, although he did balls up once with the Stella final Roddick v Karlovic cos he never focused on the match and implied it was boring. Otherwise he is witty and refreshing.

Nice One Tim :ok:

But would he want Sue's seat? Besides I like Sue, and I don't think she is ready to retire just yet. :ok:
Please though can they get rid of John frigging Inverdale? The most useless one of all.

WimbledonAce - April 10, 2008 07:06 PM (GMT)
This is great stuff :ok: Wierd me and my parents were only talking about it the other day saying wonder if Tim will do commentary or if he wants more time out.
I really like Greg - he really winds up Crofty which has to be a good thing. Surely it's time we lost her.

Scotsguy - April 10, 2008 07:30 PM (GMT)
I like Sue :)

She's a million times better than Inverdale.

Duchess - April 10, 2008 09:16 PM (GMT)
I think Chris Evert did some commentary in the US for a while-I wished she had stuck with it. She was good.

I like sue as well, but John Inverdale has got to go! along with Andrew Castle please!!!!

Brakkus - April 11, 2008 05:44 PM (GMT)
I think commentary is all about the voice, and Henman has a very pleasant tone to his.He is also very articulate,so he's bound to come across very knowledgeable.Add his sense of humour and he's almost there.

I just hope he livens up,as his interviews have shown that he kind of tails his sentences off very flat.
I sense though with the handcuffs off,in other words, not having to give too much away,he will be more expressive.

I wonder how Rusedski will take this as Pat Cash said in his book that Greg was obsessed with being overshadowed by Tim,and would mention him all the time.

My guess is again Greg will be No2 to the former No1,and Rusedski after only a year at Wimbledon will second choice to Heman again in commentary. :D

God SG, he is soooo DIRE! Make that infinite times better. Whoever put him on Wimbledon Highlights show ruined it. I used to like Sue on it, and when Pam Shriver and Amrtina Nav were there si was funny :D

Speaking of which, anyone knwo where Pam Shiriver is these days? She's one fo my faves and very witty.

Croft is the pits

Notice her use of interrogative at the end of every sentence:

' Murray's wonderful isnt he?'

' My hair's like a horse's main isnt it?'

Generally like that roflmao

Oh she sucks, like her tennis!

dl, once George and hsi mates went to some promotional fair and he had never heard of her. He cam eback sayign this nightmare bimbo woman was on a stall and wouldnt; shut up about who she was, it was her! And then he said sorry what do you do? And she looked daggers. He assumed she was some media whore model of ex BB contestant!

dl04 - April 11, 2008 08:24 PM (GMT)
That's hillarious SB roflmao And i think BB would actually have more taste than her

Another one of my pet hate commentators- Jo Durie

So dense, she'd probably give a welcome mat to Anne Frank

I swear it is true cos George and his mate came home going on abotu it, sayign they had never heard of her but that she really fancied hersefl and kept tossing her hair about

Not mad on Jo Durie either dl, but can forgive her fo rbeing the last Brit female to win a GS title. I think she could be that woman for a very long time - like after I die!

I think thats one of the worst things about Wimbledon, every morning they wheel out Croft to talk about the weather, the queues, has Tim got a chance etc. Have to remind her he's not there any more!
