Despite all the excitment of Miami there's actually no movement at all at the very top of the table. Blake and Berdych have both gone up one place at 8 and 9 respectively, with gasquet dropping down 2 places. Murray has dropped 9 places and is now out of the top table (that'll be headline news on the BBC...... ;) ) PHM is now up to 12th and Moya has moved back in to the top 20 at 16. Andreev has moved up 5 places, and interestingly enough Ljubicic is looking like he may drop out of the top 30, having dropped 5 places to number 29. Tipsy has finally moved in to the top 40 ( :yahoo: ) at 38 :)

And indeed it is ...
Also, the BBC reports that Nadal "closed the gap" on Federer. While that may be formally true (he gained more points in Miami than Roger did, I think), it seems to disregard the fact that the "gap" has considerably widened since just a month ago ...
To do the maths, Nadal has no points at all to gain until Hamburg. Roger has 425 points to defend. Being 670 points ahead in the ranking, this means that his number one ranking is safe at least until Hamburg. If Roger at least defends his points (which shouldn't be too much of a problem, given his early exit in Rome last year), then there will also be no chance of losing it in Hamburg.
So in all likelihood a lot will come down to Roger's performance at RG.
It's sure going to be a great clay season, with a grand finale at RG which may decide a lot of things. Last year was already pretty exciting, but it was mainly about Fed and Nadal. This year, we've also got Djokovic in the mix (he already had two quarterfinals in MS on clay last year, and will be looking to improve this), and some other players who might make a splash, such as Davydenko, Nalbandian, and perhaps Murray?

Roger's also got the chance to increase the lead in Estoril as neither Rafa nor Novak are playing there. In fact Novak will drop 200 points as he's defending champ in Estoril.

I didn't realize Novak wasn't trying to defend his title. Might be a smart choice, though, as he was pretty exhausted at the end of last season.
Yes, if Roger wins Estoril and reaches the final in both MC and Rome, he will pick up 475 points, I think. In that case, he would be virtually guaranteed the #1 spot until Wimbledon, I would think.
But if he wants to hang on to it for much longer, he really ought to start widening his lead in the rankings some more. He has so many points to defend from RG onward that it will be tough if he's not comfortably ahead by then.

Well he's certainly not on the players list as of this morning. People are talking of the field being weak but Davydenko will be there and could be a big threat given his good week at Miami. Of course now that I've said that he will probably lose first round to some qualifier.....

"top 3 material" or "maybe he is the real nber one?" according to the good old Loyd. ;)
However, 20 something is not bad for having 3 months off including the FO and Wimby 07. I expect to come back soon but he certainly has pressure on his shoulders now.

how could you???
Henman didnt do too badly over the years... no 4 aint so bad out of the zillions of tennis players.
as for Murray - I am with Tenez - hes not doing bad all things considered and I would hope to see him going back up - but lots of pressure now... that really is history repeating itself - we have an unforgiving public here - especially during Wimbledon - I feel quite sorry for the guy already
fah51 - April 7, 2008 02:59 PM (GMT)
Well Murray can't drop much more in the rankings - he's not defending any points !

always a bonus ;)
I meant the pressure for him to perform on his home turf as it were - I used to feel sick with worry for Henman when the headlines were screaming for him to not let us down
SuperBRAT - April 7, 2008 04:54 PM (GMT)
What's up with the BBC doing a story on Murray's drop? It is quite a fall, in fact I nearly choked on my sarnie when I read it! Had nto idea he'd fall that far down. Then again no worries really, he's high in the race and hasn't much to defend so he's surely gonna get back into the top 10.
PH Mathieu is much higher than I expected.
Federer-Williams - April 7, 2008 06:58 PM (GMT)
I hate bloody Petchey on SKY sports talking about the gap closing to no.1.
Everyone knows Djoko is faaar away from no.1 even with huge results. Nadal is near but he has the whole clay season ahead of him.
I mean FEd has 1 optional!!!!! it is astounding he is no.1 like this  he will gain every single point he gains at Estoril. If he feels his no.1 is really really in trouble he can play Halle, Stuttgart anything!
He is gonna gain on clay as well I'm sure of it. The problem since coming back is his return game. He has been holding serve easy as before (see Roddick match) with many aces and love games. His returns aren't punchy enough and clay will give him more time to re-align that part of his game .
RG !

yep, in the end it's the closest the rankings have been in a while - which is very exciting :D And i personally find it more interesting when it's close in the rankings - knowing that a players performance in one particular tournament could get them to the number 1 spot just adds so much more resonance to it. :)
having said that, from the calculations a few people on here have made, it doesn't look like - unless fed has a dire clay season (which i suppose we shouldn't rule out) - the number 1 spot should be safe until Wimbledon.
