Title: Commentator quotes and ranting thread
Dinky Jo - April 1, 2008 09:27 PM (GMT)
This thread is for all those wonderful quotes from tennis commentators the world over! So if you hear a brilliant gem in the middle of a match, or just want to have a bit of a rant about certain commentators then this is the place to do it.
Also, we'll play our regular Murray-watch game in here - every time you notice a random comment about Murray (most often by British commentators and often include "he beat Federer y'know) then put it up here - at the end of the year we'll see who managed to find the most amusing Murray comment in the most inappropriate match! :D

'Tipsarevic could be a top 10 player'
WHAT????

John Lloyd on Federer after winning his fifth Wimbledon in a row in a classic five setter :
'He squeaked through.'

Excellent work, DJ! :ok:
Oh, where to start....!
I'll commence with Cowans and Petchey "PHM should really be a top 10 player"
Er, no - he shouldn't.
Expect John Lloyd to feature here ;)

You can always rely on Lloyd!

Yep, I counted a record 17 mentions in one match...and I actually stopped counting, so it could have been more! :D

We'll have to see what the best tenuous link between Murray and another match we can find
"and Federer has brown hair, just like Murray, it's obviously why Murray can beat him" :P

What about "Murray is probably the best in the world currently" who else but Lloyd?
"Or Murrays is currently a top 3 player" Greg Rudseski...trying to cement his job as a Beeb commentator.

We love Lloydy in our house, he is great entertainment :ok: So what if he gets a little excited, at least he's passionate and interested in our players and I'd rather listen to him than some of the commentary I've heard coming from say the USO. At least he doesn't scream and shout and has a relaxing quiet toned accent. Maybe it's familiarity, he has been around a long time and when I watch proper grass stuff I do like to hear a familiar Britsih accent even if it's only wallpaper. But I do liek listening to Mac and Nav. :D

Viginia Wade 1999 Wimbledon quarter final Steffi Vs Venus.
"A string of forehands from Steffi, which makes me think she is being allowed to see too many"
I always found that line funny when i watch that match since Steffi was a forehand, the one ever and never a backhand.
Dark_Necrofear™ - April 2, 2008 11:28 AM (GMT)
Chris Evert 1999 French Open Final,Steffi Vs Martina
"Theres the power, you doubt that Hingis has power"
This stupid line coming after Martina puts an overhead away.I mean anyone and everyone can smash,so really!
Tenez - April 2, 2008 11:29 AM (GMT)
The problem with Loyd is not that much his comments but more his math skills. He can easily fit 100 players in the top 10. How he does that is a mistery but I'd like to ask him one day.

I know Tenez, but it's all part of the entertainment.
I think with the men's game as it is now, there is so much depth that so many players look like they ought to be top 10 or top 20 so I can forgive that, although obviously there are not enough spaces! Sometimes though you can see say 5 players of equal talents, who are hovering around at say 50, and you may as well toss a coin to work out which if any will be top 10 by a given date. Well that's my theory anyhow.

:D Ginny is quite funny bless her. At least she won Wimby as a Brit, which I remember very well against betty Stove, so I will let her off.

Very true. it's paper thin between top 1 and 100. Yesterday nadal/mathieu match for instance, it was all in the mind but tennis wise....very close.

Yes its a shame he is not more mentally solid cause though he lost yesterday, his shots were pretty clean hit.

It was Cowans turn to do that last night - everyone from PHM to Acasuso :D

I so miss Bud Collins!!!!!!! (wahhhhh  ) He made watching tennis fun
SaraLess - April 2, 2008 07:14 PM (GMT)
A brief foray into M-Watch - Petchey "well, when I was in Miami with Andy...."
Not a vintage Murrayism, but not bad as a neither Nadal/Blake had hit a ball!
Dark_Necrofear™ - April 3, 2008 06:59 AM (GMT)
Kevin Curren on Monica Seles in that year end championship 99 against Hingis
"Do you think she meant it?"
That was after Seles hit an off balanced return inside out winner from the ad court against Hingis. That made me laugh so much coz when Seles got to the ad court again she hit the exact same shot with this time on balance but she got the same result.....a winner.

Cowans...'the difficult thing for Andy (Roddick) is belief'
and, perhaps, the total lack of a plan - b? The one thing Roddick does have is grit and determination!
SaraLess - April 4, 2008 12:14 AM (GMT)
what utter RUBBISH from the commentators tonight - actually, it's more of the total volt-face on their opinions...
start the match saying it's a foregone conclusion that Federer is going to smash Roddick
Roddick takes the first set, and suddenly Roddick has been looking brimful of confidence recently etc etc
SaraLess - April 4, 2008 12:18 AM (GMT)
oh, and apparently serving and returning are 'two of the most important parts of the game'
Really? Really?!
Dark_Necrofear™ - April 4, 2008 09:46 AM (GMT)
Another comic classic duh comment from Jason Goodall
"The serve is the one shot in tennis where you have the opening command in a rally,if you not serving well its gonna be a long day at the office"

yeah i do love it when commentators do that - it does make me laugh. Like when Henman played Gulbis at the FO, they started off by saying that Henman should beat him easily and that Gulbis was very young. And then by the end of the first set Gulbis was suddenly the future of tennis  By the end of the match he was practically the world number 1 in their eyes......

I've got one of Murray watch, last night during the Roddick-Federer match Mark Petchey (I'm fairly certain-I know Leif was the other one)
Anyway they were talking of how Roddick was keeping calm against Fed simply because you can't live with him if you get frustrated. And then they mentioned how calm Murray was in his match against Federer in Dubai

Shiras annoys me when one time I think it was Henman had lots of open court he said "plenty of real estate there for Henman" our when a player put the ball into the tram lines he goes "he has put it into the alley"

Oh, the jokes start in the final
"who's this imposter who has kidnapped Rafael Nadal?"
and now starting with the "Nadal hasn't been to finals in 2008..." all doom and gloom after eulogising him ALL week!
:yikes:

Yes, and there will be SO many!
Another classic...
Davydenko proving yet again that he's beaten the big players in the big tournaments.
Er?! Isn't this his second AMS? His first being in 2006?
Taking nothing away from Kolya, but that's a huge overstatement!
Dinky Jo - May 9, 2008 06:25 PM (GMT)
not strictly speaking commentator quotes, but the beeb is having a rough time this week with all these "shock exits":
Federer suffers early rome exit
Safina sends Serena crashing out
Henin suffers shock Berlin defeat
Murray slumps to defeat in Rome
Nadal falls to shock loss on clay
if djoko loses later they may need to get the thesauraus out :P

They will nwo have to turn to Anglo Saxon alliteration and say
" Stepanek stuffs star Federer" or "Radek ransacks Roger's campagin".
SuperBRAT - May 9, 2008 06:39 PM (GMT)
Scrub that ... Steely Stepanek Stages Stellar Stuffing of Federer ... but it woudl be better if he stuffed Stanislaw Wawrinka in this case :D
Rampant Radek Ruins Roger''s Rome Run !
Sorry I love it! :D
