The Shuai v Momo match now into a tiebreak.
Elsewhere, Azarenka/Peer are leading Pennetta/Schiavone 3 2
chokapova - March 30, 2008 12:56 AM (GMT)
Momo wins, should do wonders for her confidence!
Manzikert - March 30, 2008 07:11 AM (GMT)
Indeed, nice gritty win for Mauresmo, against someone whom she'd only played once before (and lost). Peng served for the match twice, but Mauresmo fought back, took charge in the tiebreaker, and is through to face another talented Chinese player in Zheng (who benefited from one of Petrova's unfortunately commonplace retirements).
It was tracking Jankovic's match on a scoreboard that really had me tearing my hair out, though. It's not just that she saved FIVE match points in the deciding tiebreaker, including three in a row from 3-6 down ... resulting in an impressive-looking scoreline of 6-7(7), 6-2, 7-6(9). But she actually clawed her way back from 5-1 down in the set! Frankly she should have never let herself get a double break down, with points to break for an early 2-0 lead missed, as well as points to get back on serve for 3-2, but to her credit she fought all the way back to 5-all (escaping 30-all and deuce at 5-4 down, even). Very reminiscent of the Paszek match from the AO, won 12-10 in the third with three MPs saved.
Of course, Arvidsson can be a tricky player and despite her current ranking was formerly Top 40, but she probably shouldn't have given Jankovic that much trouble, especially when one considers that had the extended first-set tiebreaker gone the No 3's way she would have been off the court in straights. For some reason she always struggles in Miami, with several first- and second-round exits even after she'd broken into the Top 20, which recalls Henin who also had relatively lacklustre results there prior to last year's final (and with championship points missed, arguably she still has Miami issues). A seemingly revived Safarova in the next round will also be a gruelling test (especially considering their epic Wimbledon clash last year). I'd like to see her survive to face Mauresmo for what could be an interesting fourth-round match-up, the winner to take on one of the Russians in the QFs.
Scotsguy - March 30, 2008 11:59 AM (GMT)
Chakvetadze and Dementieva won :yahoo:
Also I don't know if this has been noticed by anyone else but what is interesting is the Portuguese girl, Michelle Larcher de Brito. She made some noise last year at 14 when she beat one of the American players (Shaghnessy, Harkleroad or Craybas-some journeywoman like that) and now this year has beaten Aga Radwanska to reach the 3rd round. Could this girl have a future?

Can not believe the turn around in the kuznetsova match, was match points down at one point!!
nevets - March 30, 2008 07:38 PM (GMT)
Currently, Suigyama is leading Hantuchova 4-0 and 30-0 in the 1st set  Wonder if Dani has an injury?
Shahar Peer is thrashing Michelle Larcherde Brito 60 21 and Mauresmo won the first set 75 against Jie.

Manzikert - March 30, 2008 09:01 PM (GMT)
I suppose when Ivanovic said she was going into this match as though it were a final, unfortunately she meant she was bringing her Slam final performance. :P The worst I've seen her play over the past fortnight, just listless and unable to finish shots, finding the net or missing the lines far too often. Perhaps the conditions may be playing a role but there is some cloud cover. Davenport hasn't been dazzling but she's just too solid for her opponent right now.
However, Ivanovic has been able to dig herself out of some tough situations lately and we'll see if she manages to make something happen here. With that said, she's facing yet another break point.
Scotsguy - March 30, 2008 09:05 PM (GMT)
Come on Lindsay....get rid of Ana-I don't want her in Miami :P
Dani-Ai 3-3 in the breaker...

Wow, I know Dav's been a brill player but this is the biggest match since her comeback and I wasn't expecting this scoreline!!!!

Yup, total garbage from Ana. Still, she's allowed off-days I guess, even if I would have liked to see her beat Davenport, and has actually managed to improve on her performance here from last year, where she comically got hammered by Shvedova in her first match.

Yeah, if Ivanovic had to lose early, there's no shame in having done so against Davenport. This match was going to decide the entire quarter, considering Hantuchova's lousy record against Davenport, including yet another loss to her in her comeback. Now the American can claim the scalps of both the No 2 and No 3 players since returning to the tour.
Speaking of Hantuchova, she eked out the second set 10-8 in the tiebreaker. What a narrow escape - Sugiyama served for the match if I recall. Speaking of narrow escapes and epic tiebreakers, Jankovic is already on the court some fourteen hours after her two-and-a-half hour thriller last night. That's tough scheduling.
Scotsguy - March 30, 2008 09:19 PM (GMT)
How are you guys watching Dav-Ana...it wasn;t on Eurosport???
dl04 - March 30, 2008 09:21 PM (GMT)
This is authorative Davenport on display today and in this mood it's very hard to bring her down whewn she's serving and hitting the lines wiith such accuracy and weight of shot. Simply awesome ball-striking

Yep, I agree with that. Just thought that Dav's so much further into her comeback now and back in the groove which means there's a better chance of a competitive match!
Although, by the looks of it Ana was never really in it!

She's always been bad at following up victories in tournaments, for some reason. Here it's especially annoying since if she'd won this match, she'd have had a pretty straightforward run to the final... and more to the point, it really doesn't look good her losing to Davenport. Never mind... hopefully Davenport can make the final herself now.
It really is the week of the comeback/choke in Miami, with Jankovic yesterday, Azarenka's appalling collapse after missing a straightforward smash on match point against Kuznetsova, and now Hantuchova coming back from 5-2 and a double-break down in the second set against Sugiyama.
dl04 - March 30, 2008 09:24 PM (GMT)

well done Lindsay!!! :)
Dani comes back from 2-5 down to win second set.... :D
chokapova - March 30, 2008 09:30 PM (GMT)
and Dani breaks Sugi in first game of final set...
meanwhile Jelena is 4-1 up v Safarova... :D
Manzikert - March 30, 2008 10:01 PM (GMT)
Looks like either Jankovic is all business today and doesn't want to waste any more time on court, up a set and break 6-2, 3-0 in just 45 minutes, or maybe Safarova has lapsed back into slump-dom. Looks to be a refreshingly straightforward win here for Jankovic, although there is still work to do and the erratic Czech is always capable of turning it on without warning.
Schnyder is cruising towards a bizarre double bagel against unsung Estonian stalwart Kanepi down 0-6, 0-5. A perplexing result but one that puts us a step closer towards an assured Serena v Henin rematch in the quarters, given their next opponents are Kanepi and Vesnina. Serena however has to focus first on her current opponent, the fiery Pennetta, and is serving for the first set 5-3..
Meanwhile Hantuchova's epic against frequent doubles partner Sugiyama continues, having been pegged back to 4-all in the decider.
Scotsguy - March 30, 2008 10:04 PM (GMT)
Patty manages to win a game
Miss Suzi - March 30, 2008 10:07 PM (GMT)
:halo: Yes... Patty is like that.... plays flawlessly sometimes and then collapses in the next match in a similar manner...but thats what makes her a special lefty..
:) If davenport doesn't make at least the semi's I will be so disappointed now...
Manzikert - March 30, 2008 10:12 PM (GMT)
Serena was broken whilst serving for the set, then let double set point go begging on Pennetta's serve at 5-4. A perplexing turnaround looked likely, facing break point on her own serve but she's reestablished her lead at 6-5.
Jankovic wraps it up in less than an hour against Safarova, 6-2, 6-1. Talk about a literal night and day difference from her last match. She has a winnable next match to reach the quarters against Zheng.
Hantuchova serving to stay in the match (again) at 4-5 in the third.
