Title: AMERICAN IDOL
Description: anyone watching?

SuperBRAT - March 26, 2008 08:17 PM (GMT)
I've been following it and was really hacked off last week when they voted off Amanda Overmeyer  She was a real rock chick with a great voice. Should have been in the final four IMO. I was hoping to see her do some Janis Joplin cos that is who she reminds me of.

Carly is good but hasn't quite hit the right song yet, I do like Brooke and her Carly Simon-eseque charm. Micahel Johns the Aussie is HOT  and I like what he sings, although he does sound a bit INXS, and Chikeze is very good and versatile. David Cook is really good if you like your indie rock style and has doen soem great performances.

Jason Castro with the dreads is crap and overrated, very weak voice and should have gone last week. They fancy him though

Here's the site link and contestants.

It was daft doing Lennon and McCartney one week then the Beatles the next

Paula and Simon crack me up and Ryan Seacrest is th emost wooden tw*t on TV.

Lex - March 26, 2008 08:25 PM (GMT)
started watching the series, but I lost interest when all Paula Abdul and the other guy could do was to incite the audience to rubbish everything Simon Cowell said

He talks the most truth and gives the best constructive critcism

I know it's part of the spectacle, but it gets galling when the others don't really crticise and make the contestants think Simon is on their case all the time

Know what you mean, but I think one of Simon's problems is that he goes OTT sometimes when ti wasn;t as bad as he says. He is wrng at times, but generally more right than the others. Although this series I must say I think Randy is being more critical and honest and he seems to say a lot of what I shout at the TV. Paula is too nice, and you knwo you are in trouble when she say show great you look

Scotsguy - April 9, 2008 10:43 AM (GMT)
I'm watching-They are all so much more taleted than the British Ones. Last season was good (Blake Lewis was   -His album is really good as well)

But this seaosn has much more strength in depth and no Sanjaya :phew:

My fave is definitely David Cook-He has been amazing week in week out.

However David Archuleta is obviously going to win because no demographic is as powerful or obsessed as the tween girls.

]I order the contestants as such.

1. David Cook-Best voice of the boys, great musician and not typical AI.
2. Brooke White-Nice person very smooth voice and again a talented musician as well.
3. Michael Johns-He was amazing last week-the typical rocker.
4. Carly Smithson-irish lass who wants this more than any of the others. Needs to watch she doesn't become the big voice diva-they never do so well on AI
5. Jason Castro-Would have won if this was CoffeeHouse Idokl-Very chilled, reminds me of Newton Faulkner. needs to step it up though-he is boring.
6. David Archuleta-Gareth Gates of American-Can sing ballads to perfection but give him a fast song and its quite literally scary.
7. Syesha-Boring big voice diva.
8.Kristy Lee Cook-Can't hold a tune but does make good song choices to appeal to the God-fearing americans...

SuperBRAT - April 9, 2008 10:45 AM (GMT)
What concerns me SG is that I think some fo the people voted off shoudl have stayed, more talented and added variety. He was old fashioned but Chikeze was much more talented than some fo the others, and I liked Amanda Overmeyer. Glad that Ramiele went last week becuase i don't think she si going anywhere or improving, and is pretty boring.

That always happens in AI-The bad ones stay longer than the mediocre one because they are more memorable.

I mean hernandez suffered from the whole gay stripper thing which I think is really harsh because he was a good singer.

But Amanda and Chikezie were simply middling they weren't up there with the Davids and they weren't at the bottom with Kristy so people forget to vote for them.

WHat annoys me is David A will win even though David C is a million times better than him.

Have you prepared yourself for Idol gives back this week-Tissues at the ready...

I liked Blake too SG , last year though Melinda should have won - she was robbed not going to the final.

My opinion of the acts is

1. David Cook- great voice, originality in song arrangments, could record tomorrow and sell loads. Only issue is he is a bit soundalike of the American Indie rock scene - sounds exactly like someone famous, can't think who. Remember Chris Daughtrey? He was similar and his songs are sadly boring now, I worry this would happen to David. I think he should be in a band maybe.

2. Brooke White - I really lile her charisma, she reminds me of Carly Simon. Only issue is that she needs to be a songwriter.singer cos she isn';t strong enough vocally as a pure singer - nice tone but can't lift up a chorus. Her "You're So Vain" was brilliant though. Trouble is though that if it goes a bit wrong, I think of Pheobe in Friends!

3. Michael Johns-He's been my fave from the start, glad he is picking it up when it matters. Amazing that he can sing Queen his way and make it work. Such charisma, stage presence and power, reminds me of Jim Morrison. Very good looking too :D And and Aussie!

4. Carly Smithson-best voice fo the women. I thought so from day 1. Great personality too and a bit edgey. Problem is they are not giving her songs she connects with. Agree that she could get boring if she becomes the big voice diva.

5. Jason Castro-He's there for the image, look, and frankly is rubbish so needs to leave. I'm dissappointed cos I thought it was good to have someone different in there who is a bit like a guitar singer songwriter, but I don't think he's good enough vocally. Newton Faulkner poor copycat.

6. David Archuleta-can't deny his talent but agree with SG. He's very 80s, seems older than he is. TBH I am bored of him. Annoys me how Simon praises him yet calls other acts old fashioned and irrelavant.

7. Syesha-I liek singers of her style BUT she isn't the best fo her style. She has moments fo sounding lovely then moments of sounding shit. Especailly in lower registers. She was the weakest of the black soul divas and is still there.

8.Kristy Lee Cook- she is like wallpaper, nothing stands out. She also annoys me, but i have to say that she can sing well and has improved. I really do think she'd be excellent in country music, she does have that twang. Otherwise she is average. When she sang God Bless America though, it was cringeworthy. :sicky:

Scotsguy - April 9, 2008 11:07 AM (GMT)
Yeah but God Bless America was the song choice of a genius-It got her every single patriotic ameircan's vote.

I would love a David C-Michael final but unfortunately they are vote splitters-they appeal to the same demographic-and as a result one of them will probably end up being ousted 4th or 5th in a 'shock' elimination.

I think Kristy or Syesha will go soon. Carly might be in trouble-I want her to do well but the americans aren't really taking to her.

Jason was apparently amazing last night so he is safe

Oh drat! We want Jason off! That's the trouble with him though, if he gets a week where it works for him then he's staying regardless of how good the others are in camparison.

I agree that Kirsty had a genius song choice in the context, I just found it sickly as did my partner and friend that were watching.

Good point on David and Michael, that might mean one goes early. :( I'd like to see them in the final too. They are my faves along with Carly and Brooke. My firend hadn't seen it before and when she watched she though David and Michael were brilliant.

What was the theme this week? We don't get to see it until tomorrow night.

Scotsguy - April 9, 2008 11:19 AM (GMT)
It was Idol Gives Back Week (you know Inspirational songs etc) lots of tearful videos.

You have the exact same 4 favourites as me :D :D :D Good taste :ok:

I haven't watched the show yet but apparently David C had a letdown but I think he's safe enough for now.....

Oh god, not Idol Gives Back! Not that I have antyhing against charity cos I worked for 2 and I apprecaite and support them but the last ones were a bit over cheeesy and they did cheesy songs.

I didn't think folks got voted off on IGB week?

They're having 3 shows

The normal one where the contestants do their songs. Then the one on Wednesday where one would normally be eliminated but instead they are just having 2 hours of filler

And then a third on Thursday where someone is eliminated (Hopefully Syesha or Kristy or David A)

Scotsguy - April 9, 2008 02:17 PM (GMT)
Well whoever told me that Jason was good was evidently lying.

I just watched his performance on youtube and it was dreadful. Kristy Lee was actually good this week :o

David Cook wasn't as bad as the judges made out.

All in all none of the performances were inspirational and I think it was a very weak night unlike last years idol gives back where Jordan and Melinda rocked the house, to make up for poor performances from the rest. Syesha must go.

Everyone seemed to love David A's performance but i found it emotionless and just really meh. I really don't like this kid and his 'aww shuchks-you like me?' personality.

I don't look at the performances in advance cos i like to sit down with my beer and watch the whole show as s surprise. I wonder how much they will have of it on thsi week though, cos i have found that this year, they seem to really cut down our version. What p*sses me off most is the Chicago town Pizza ads. I tape ti so as I can fast forward them!

Yeah I sky+ it so just skip the bits when I get bored. Is it just me or does anyone else think Ryan is seriously camp? I doubt he's gay-he's not cool enough for that-he's just extremely effeminate. And his banter with Simon reminds me of an old married couple bickering......

Hadn't really seen him a scamp, but he's nto very witty and every time he tries to drum up an arguement with Simon he comes out looking really stupid. I personally think he's so steritupical wooden USA TV presenter. A cardboard cutout woudl do a better job.

I don't know yet SG, thanks for not saying. :ok:

If It's Michael Johns though there will be trouble :kpow2: :kpow2: :kpow2: :argh:

It was hard to judge it last night. I wanted Jaso Castro off, but what he did was within his range and worked so he will stay. Kyesha - just not good enough. David Archuletta was pretty bad, very nasally and flat at times, and so old fashioned, but I bet he stays  Kirsty is probably safe cos she seems to be targetting her bore me to death audence well. Anyway they are the ones I least like.

I was concerned for Chris, good but not his best song by miles - and the judges highlighted that . Thought Michael was great, and should be fine although the judges slated him a bit. Carly was pretty good, but maybe didn;t quite connect, but the judges will have ruined it with their comments. They said it was an angry perfromance, but hello! Freddie was hardly in party mood when he sung that song. I liked Brooke, good song choice,. not brilliant but pretty good and the judges were unfair so they've shown her up as well.

I actually thought that if it were me, I'd stick Archuletta, Syesha in bottom 2 based on perfromance - not sure who else. Based on talent and past perfromances it should be Jason, Ayesha and either David or Kirsty there, maybe Brooke as a last resort. But I thought the audience would Put Ayesha there for sure, and then David and Carly or Brooke. And based on your reaction it's gonna be someon godo going .... I don';t know who ..... I'm going for David, then Carly, then Brooke.

Don't say, I'm comign back tonite after I watch the results show and by th esound sof it I am going to be very unhappy!

Scotsguy - April 11, 2008 02:13 PM (GMT)
As you know we have the 4 same favourites SB and as you know I was stunned.

I thought the performances were very very average, nobody inspired me and all in all it was disappointing after some great ones (The first beatles night, the songs from when you were born and country night)

Here is how I rank them:

1. Brooke White: I loved it, I thought she connected incredibly with the audience. Plus she always looks great when playing an instrument but without one she is awkward on stage-but this time she wasn't.

2. David Cook: I don't get why people didn't like it. I really enjoyed it and thought that apart from the bit where the stupid choir drowned him out he was very good.

3. Michael Johns: Good but a bit forgettable, and he totally impersonated Steve Tyler. I agree with the judges that Michael is more of a soul bluesy singer than Rock-leave that to David.

4. Jason Castro-I REALLY REALLY don't like Jason, apart from Syesha he is the one I would most like rid of. He is so bland. But he did very well at what he does last night and unlike some other contestants like Carly and Michael-He knows what sound he wants to be and he sticks with it

5. Kristy Lee Cook-I believe she is the least talented one left but last night she really shocked me-I mean her voice sounded good and she looked so comfortable on stage. She draws a lot of attention and she stays noticed.

6. Carly: I so wanted to like this and it wasn't as bad as people made out but she did look angry not inspiring and her runs were all over the place-it became a little shreiky but not in an emotional way. It was mediocre and she needs a good week because I miss good Carly.

7. David A-The less said about this song the better. Why did people like it??? He oversang it and it was just awful. I felt cold after it,

8. Syesha-Boring, mediocre and forgettable. Need I say more?

Well SG I was wondering if their votes were getting split like you said, with them both being rock singers. Then again folks who liked David might like Carly as well, I certainly do. For me though Michael had the edge on David, but that was my personal preference. :) It's a shame there is so much mediocre crap left in it, all the interestign ones are going. I can see Carly going if sh edoesn't have agreat week and if the boring ones have a good one.

I disagree that Michael had the edge on David. He may have been better looking but his voice wasn't as powerful and he never looked as comfortable on stage. I think David C is the best thing in the competition but I'll be happy enough as long as David A, Jason, Syesha or Kristy win

To me he did cos he had the charisma and seemed more of an old fashoined bluesy rocker, whcih is a style I prefer to waht David does. But I really think David is great too. Didnt' want either to go.

There is one eeeny weeeny teeny tiny good thing about this: David Cook will get  most of Michaels voters now.

True-David is more of an indie rock (well as indie as you can possibly be whilst still on AI)

I still think between them and Brooke they have had the performances of the season.

David C-Billie Jean and Eleanor Rigby. Michael-it's all wrong but it's all right. Brooke-You're so Vain and Let it Be

Oh yeah, they were some of the best songs. I liked Michael's Queen thing as well. He was my fave form the auditions, he stood out when he did Bo Rap cos he didnt; try and copy Freddie Mercury but managed to sing in his own way and extremely well. It's All Wrong But I'ts Alright was superb though. I hoep he makes some recordsa dn get son the TV though :D

I thought David Cook was awesome as Mariah Carey week. And watch him this week-He is the best of the night by a mile :ok:

Brooke has a little blunder this week, tis quite funny.

Jason is God-Awful this week, it was the longest 2 minutes of my life

Tonight Andre Lloyd Webber is the mentor (His son goes to my school  ) And he is actually honest, which is refreshing.

But the result

I didn't think that song was good for David.

I liked Brooke last week best but she was bottom 3  I'm worried she will go soon. :(

Glad Jason was awful but I get the feeling he still stays  I think the depth of talent is shocking this year as in bad!

Really?? Everyone has been calling this the strongest year of AI yet....I only really watched from season 4 onwards, but season 4 had 2 great performers Carrie and Bo, the rest were poor. Season 5 was very strong, Season 6 had a great top 3 but Lakisha was nothing special-nor were Chris R (Although I liked him) or Phil Stacey.

This year all 6 are good at what they do. I may not like Jason but he is good at the whole coffee house vibe-but listen to him on Memory (you know that Cats song) and he just flounders....

Syesha rocks the house, Carly does the best she's done in weeks, David A does what he always does, Brooke screws up (Which is a shame because she's my second fave...) and Cook just proves that he has the best voice as well as everything else....

Tonight is a decent show, given what I was expecting...

I liked Lakisha, she was good. Melinda was the best though. :D

I watched it SG and was amazed by the results. Assuming you'd never seen it before (cos Kyesha is crap usually) you'd have not put Kyesha and Gina in the bottom two surely? :o I thought they were the strongest of the night, although Kyesha is still not great . Gina was the best. I liked Brooke but silly song choice but she made it. Didn't like David, sorry. That is not what he is about and he wasn't very outstanding at it. Archuletta was Ok but nothing special, very boy band-ish, in fatc alsmost Leon off X Factor -esque! And Jason had some dire moments in hs song and should have gone. Looking at the bigger picture over the last few weeks Kyesha and Jason were the worst singers and bottom 2. Either way it shoudl NEVER have been Gina.

I think what is left is quite borign and weak, and America aren't just deaf they have no ears. :argh:

Btw thought Andrew LLOYD WEBER was great on there. Very good mentor, very honest about the acts, he didn't suck up to them. He also recognised Brooke's talent and criticised Jason, spot on :ok:

I reckon old Michael Johns would have doen realyl well last night, shame he wasn't there.

Scotsguy - April 26, 2008 12:30 PM (GMT)
I can't understand how you didn't like David C-I felt more than anyone he connected with the song and he just understood it. Also he has the most dynamic voice of the top 6. He should win but I don't want him to because he'll be forced to sing stupid songs about rainbows and unicorns.....Also he showed that he can sing anything-apart from his one poor week in Idol Gives Back he has consistently been top 3 or 1st...

Syesha was very good this week-She could be a big success on broadway.

Likewise Carly finally made a good song choice-she looked like she was having great fun on onstage. The problem is that both have been weak in the past couple of weeks. Carly singing songs that show of her voice but we never got to see what genre she would be-is she a rocker? Is she a diva? Is she a girl next door type? and Syesha has chosen songs that have been too big for her.

Remember people are voting on how they have done over their last few performances and not just how they did on the night.

JAson gets lots of votes because of his looks-it's the only way I can explain it.

And I think it's quite amusing that your favourite season was last year and you don't like this year where as most people are the opposite so good for you on not following the crowd
