Title: Haas pulls out, Coincidence?

ark_28 - March 22, 2008 12:07 PM (GMT)
Ok guys, not sure if this has been talked about already but. Obviously last night Haas pulled out without taking the court against Federer as he said he had a sinus infection.

Its quite rare to pull out deep in the tournament without taking the court and then I remeber Haas also pulled out without taking the court against Federer last year in what should have been with 4th round of Wimbledon.

has Haas been extreamely unlucky or is this more than just a massive coincidence?

dl04 - March 22, 2008 12:11 PM (GMT)
Well i doubt he would pull out in fear of losing

It is strange though how its a second consecutive walkover to the same player. Maybe there's something in the water roflmao

SuperBRAT - March 22, 2008 12:20 PM (GMT)
Are you implying Fed is paying Tommy to pull out?

I don't really know, maybe Tommy felt too unwell I thought it best he didn't play - especially against Fed. But he has a godo record in the H2H so I thought he might liek to take hsi chances and see?

Anywya that aside, I don't get how sinus infections keep a player of that fitness and phsyique form playing. I get them all the time, I'm just one of those sufferers. They can make you feel totally crap if they get severe but most folks get on with it with one. Unless it's very chronic I'd expect a fit healthy sportman to be able to play.

mightyjeditribble - March 22, 2008 01:00 PM (GMT)
Why would Tommy pull out if he's not ill? It's not like he has much to lose against Federer, and surely if there's any time to break his losing streak against him, it'd be now!

Anyway, I hope Tommy gets better soon.

nevets - March 22, 2008 01:20 PM (GMT)
I agree. Haas has quite a good H2H record against Federer and has pushed him to five sets a couple of times. I'm sure most players would relish the chance to play the world number one on Centre Court.

Gav - March 22, 2008 01:22 PM (GMT)
Haas is one type of player that can trouble Federer in my opinion. I can't see him pulling out unless he was genuinly ill.

BIG-TODGER - March 22, 2008 01:25 PM (GMT)
In this sort of situation i think we have to give the players the benefit of the doubt, and assume that Haas is ill as stated.
Anyway Haas losing to Fed isn't the biggest deal in the world-Fed is hardly an unknown wannaby, there could be no loss of pride even if Haas were to have lost.

He is certainly not scared of losing to Fed but Haas is a very proud player with a big sized ego (I like him a lot btw). Losing to Fed won't give him much pleasure. We all remember how he responded to Courier after his AO 06 loss to Fed. It might be respect or pride but I would not be surprised if he had played on had it been against a lesser ranked player.

But sinus problem would have affected his breathing and therefore energy. It did well to pull out as he knows better than anyone else than if not 100%, the chances of winning are close to nill.

WimbledonAce - March 22, 2008 03:42 PM (GMT)
I'm used to Tommy's ailments so not too surprised by this! Shame though, he does suffer a lot bless him
