Title: Jankovic v Davenport: IW quarterfinal
Manzikert - March 20, 2008 10:38 PM (GMT)
Not sure if any of you lot are watching this one. I hope it's a cracking match.
Jankovic starts out in very un-Jankovic fashion: an ace and three unreturned serves. A bit surprising considering what a good returner Davenport is - I thought she would have attacked Jankovic's serve right away.
Actually Davenport looks a bit uncomfortable out there, and serves a double. Things look interesting as a forehand winner up the line from Jankovic sets up 30-all, but an ace and an UE from Jankovic puts it at 1-all.

the scoreboard is still broken

Is it? I'll try to keep on top of things.
Jankovic coasts to 40-love on her serve, before Davenport finally makes her mark with a clean return winner. But Jankovic is unperturbed and a backhand up the line takes her to 2-1.

Hmm, Davenport still hasn't found her rhythm out there, netting a makeable overhead smash. Another UE and Jankovic has the first break points of the match at 15-40. She overcooks a backhand swinging volley that would've been a winner if she kept in the court, but takes the next break point on a forehand that sails long from Davenport.
Jankovic takes an early lead 3-1. Early days yet, and with Jankovic there are usually opportunities to break back.

40-love again for Jankovic. She's really serving well and is all business. Davenport doesn't let her have it all her way, with a smoking backhand return that clips the line right at Jankovic's feet, but the Serb still holds and is in a strong position leading 4-1.

Sigh. Davenport has the trainer out at the change of ends, and it appears she's not happy with her back. It was her back that caused her to miss most of 2006, and I hope this isn't a flare-up of the same thing.

Looks like just a brief consultation and not a full-fledged time-out just yet, luckily.
Davenport seems to moving all right, and wins two brief rallies. Two unreturned serves and she holds for 2-4.

Clutch drop volley from Jankovic with the ball above her shoelaces. Unreturned serve. 30-love.
A double fault puts her at 30-15. Unreturned serve for 40-15. UE from Jankovic for 40-30, and things look like they could get complicated, but a second ace from Jankovic (that can be her entire match total sometimes!) takes her safely to 5-2.

No return visit from the trainer. Davenport stares moodily at her racquet. She'll be serving with new balls so should be able to force Jankovic to try to serve it out.

Oof. Davenport looked to be having a comfortable hold up 40-15, but a backhand winner which Jankovic sends behind her and then a DF brings it to deuce.
Jankovic takes charge at net and has a set point. She takes it.
Davenport's had enough and heads straight to the chair to shake hands. Jankovic wins by retirement 6-2.
Sigh.

So the No 1, 2, 3 and 4 seeds are in the semis. An all-Serbian semi in the top half and an all-Russian semi in the bottom half.

Poor Linds. That must be hard to take. :( :(
Still, the semi finals are not a bad line up at all.

It's clearly my fault. I started a dedicated thread so of course she had no option but not to continue.
I wonder what this means for Miami. This is really a huge letdown because it was the only opportunity (after the AO, where she was an early victim to the Sharapova express) to see how Davenport would fare in her comeback at a big tourney. I hope she recovers soon, for her own sake obviously as well as the tour..

I'm sure that hauling her son's equipment-strollers, car seats, etc-as well as her own takes its toll as well. I remember an old commercial in the US for some brand of aspirin. It featured Chris Evert & Jimmy Connors. Jim was still playing and Chris had retired. C says something to J about tennis being hard on your body and he says to her "well so are kids."
