The Vatican has come up with 7 "modern" deadly sins in addition to the original sins of:

Pride
Envy
Gluttony
Lust
Anger
Greed
Sloth

so we now have:

Environmental pollution
Genetic manipulation
Accumulating excessive wealth
Inflicting poverty
Drug trafficking and consumption
Morally debatable experiments
Violation of fundamental rights of human nature

So, firstly what do people think of these new sins? And secondly, can we add any to the list - humourous or not :P

I'm actually quite pleased they've added some new ones, 'cos i think i've broken all the original lot :blush: hm....and i've broken 1 of the new ones already :unsure:

Interestingly the first lot of sins are subjective emotions, which says everything about the 6th centuries approach to the human condition,
the modern versions look more like general undertakings for societies rather than individuals.
I can imagine myself feeling lust, anger or definitely sloth, but can't imagine myself 'inflicting poverty' or committing 'genetic manipulation'.

There were also virtues given originally including chastity, abstinence, temperance, diligence, patience, kindness, and humility. I'm getting worryingly good at chastity, abstinence and patience (not through choice) in recent weeks :unsure:

can I add "reality TV shows" to the list? or will that invoke that deadly sin of anger in most of the rest of the board??? :P

In keeping with the first set or original sins, which are personal characteristics, I'd like to add

hypocrisy
ignorance (as in ignoring isssues that are important and turning the other cheek)
arrogance
vanity
selling out your principles

and being up your own arse! :lol:

Not sure the new sins move me all that much.

Most of them fall into one of the other categories just fine
Environmental Polution = Gluttony, Sloth
Drug Trafficing / Usage = Pride, Gluttony, Lust, Greed.
etc...

These are nice ideas for listing things that are sins but they are a bit specific instead of being an idealistic guide to behaviour.
I mean, I don't do drugs, I'm not rich, I don't pollute, I'm not a research scientist/doctor and I'm not a politician so I don't have to worry about comming a "deadly sin".

The original list is nice, all-encompasing, list of ideas and actions you should work towards avoiding:
Too much is bad, lazy is bad, self-absorption is bad, etc...
I can see myself having to work at avoiding these 'deadly' sins but the new ones.... eh, nope - to specific.

For full disclosure, yes, I am RC so this list supposedly applies to me.
