yeah, i hope amelie does well too. she should be up in the top 10, not a measly 27th rank!
she has an alright draw, up to the quarters where she meet sharapova. if she beats an inform sharapova. that might just rejevenuate the former no1 *fingers crossed*

highlights for the ladies are thin...a B-grade French encounter between Pin et Rezai and we'll see if Gisela Dulko can make it happen again, starting with Yank Julie Ditty.
jack.hl.ng - March 13, 2008 01:26 PM (GMT)
Li withdrew replaced by Nakamura :(
aw :( had a good draw here aswell, a right knee injury, one that made her withdrew from sydney and dubai already this year. She was a semi finalist last year, now losing 210 points, she is at the bottom of the top 30, and could potentially drop out.
Stay healthy Li! and come back to defend the 125 points from Miami!!!
Miss Suzi - March 13, 2008 02:21 PM (GMT)
 I was 'wishfully' hoping the williams sisters would have been here ...
but bangalore..ah well wasn't a bad idea...
But..when this tourney becomes 'mandatory' so to speak... I wonder if they'll still be able to stand by their principles and boycott it...... they would need the points...that is  if they don't even need it now.
It would have been good to see a Sharapova Serena tussle..though on current form Miss Pova means business.. hopefully won't be too long.... :)
Justine...missing is understandable ..won't really harm her and probably a wise decision ..there are things to defend up ahead.
No Cara Black/ Huber too....??
Duchess - March 13, 2008 03:59 PM (GMT)
thought Julie Ditty was a soccer (football) player  . Saw where Mauresmo & Kuznetsova won their first match-YAAAAAAYYYYYY!!!!

Nicole  Dellacqua is a good scrappy player, but she's got so much more weapons in her arsenal than the Australian. A really bizaree result, and we're still waiting for Nicole to make a big breakthrough. She's just so sporadic

I don't get Nicole either. When she first shot to fame I thought she'd make much more of herself than say Ivanovic but she is very unpredictable.

i still believe Nicole will become a great player once she gets a breakthrough tournament win

Mauresmo was spanked 6-1 6-2 by A Bondarenko today
just more of the same from Mauresmo today that we've seen for the past year. With losses like that, you really have to question where does Mauresmo go next? The only way i can see her resurecting her career is in the grass-court season, but it's still not a given that her confidence will return on her fav surface.

Also a bit vexed by the Vaidisova loss, but it's not entirely surprising. Dellacqua also pushed her to three sets in one of the AO tune-up events (the Aussie then of course had her grand run to the final 16 in Melbourne), so was a tricky opener for Vaidisova, who's hardly played a competitive match since the AO herself.
She reminds me a bit of a female Ancic, with some big runs at Slams (several semis and quarters between them), some decent stays in the Top 10, but perennially plagued by bad luck with illness and injuries - they both even got hit by glandular fever last year - as well as inconsistent, unpredictable form. But Paszek was likely to see her off anyhow.
As for Mauresmo, I was hoping to see how she matched up against Sharapova in the next round - not many can claim to have only lost once out of several meetings against the Russian champion. Mauresmo would have undoubtedly lost anyway but perhaps there could have been a psychological element at work in her favour, and she could have come away with some confidence if she had made a good account of herself. As it stands she hasn't been the same player since squandering leads against Henin and Vaidisova last grass season (serving for the Eastbourne title against the former, and letting numerous set points go begging against the latter), but I suppose we can wait and see how she does this time round. Retirement certainly seems to be looming, unfortunately. Having been No 1 for months on end, with two Slams and a YEC title to her credit, and having been a Top 10 fixture even before that, I doubt she'd be content to bounce around on the circuit for a couple more seasons as a Top 50 journeywoman.

I wouldn't be surprised if Amelie announces her retirement very soon...
I really hope she doesn't and maybe steps back a bit and regain some passion for the game. that must be all it is as physically she can surely compete with these girls...
A 1 and 2 loss to Bondarenko isn't good at all
Duchess - March 17, 2008 04:28 PM (GMT)
trisco someone posted an article on Amelie's website that says she ought to play more doubles & that it might ressurect her game. :) also where did this Dellaqua girl come from? She seems to be having a good year.

I havn't seen much of her either, she is currently hammering Paszek 6-1 2-0... :yikes:

I thought she might vanish back into the ether after her home favourite streak at the AO, although I liked what I saw of her against Jankovic there. She's got some nice groundstrokes and is scrappy. Looks like she's putting together a good run here as well. Paszek had a good start to the year, reaching the Auckland semis without dropping a set before falling to the Davenport express, but maybe that 12-10 in the third epic against Jankovic has been weighing on her. She's only had one win since then, and it came this week, where she still dropped the first set against qualifier Schruff. She even got bagelled by Schnyder, and looks in danger of having it done again by Dellacqua, who is drubbing her 6-1, 4-0. I hope Paszek gets it together again soon, as she's one of the more exciting up-and-comers.
Speaking of drubbings and bagels, Jankovic took the first set 6-1 against Sugiyama, cranking out a dozen winners along the way (a high count for her, especially compressed into seven games); it could have been a bagel but the Japanese veteran clawed out of a 0-40 hole on the only game she held. They've been having some good rallies but the Serb is usually having the last say in them. I'm hoping a Jankovic v Davenport rematch materialises in the quarters, since they had some bad blood between them when they split matches last year. Should be good stuff.
Edited to add:
Ah, Paszek just retired from the match. I hope it's mainly her pride that is injured so that she'll still make it to Miami. B)

Actually Tamira Paszek was sick around Dubai Barclays championships .. and she left back to Austria for medical treatment.. I am actually surprised she returned to play here given that her attitude is a very big chunk of her game.
Some rest, for a proper full recovery should be good for her health and psyche.
:) Indeed, She does have an exciting game when in full flow...
Amelie will probably make a good doubles player, her game style suits it ... As to whether it help her in singles  not so sure. In my opinion, doubles doesn't really give you a single minded 'killer instinct' which I think was a recurring problem with Amelie. Who knows, it may make her feel good about herself and draw out her own edge again. The nature of her defeats though is sometimes hard to stomach for an ardent fan given her talent and achievements...
