Title: A small puzzle
Pebs - March 5, 2008 05:38 PM (GMT)
Mr Pebs has just brought this home and I got it totally wrong on the first go, so thought I would see if you cleverclogs out there would like a go...
There are seven girls on a bus and each girl has seven backpacks. In each backpack there are seven big cats. For every seven big cats, there are seven little cats.
How many legs are there on the bus?
(this isnt a trick question of buses have wheels - you actually need to work out the number of legs :) )

"There are seven girls on a bus and each girl has seven backpacks. In each backpack there are seven big cats. For every seven big cats, there are seven little cats."
7 x 2 + 7 x 7 x 4 + 7 x 7 : 7 x 7 x 4 = 420
Sorry, I'm pish at maths but that's my try. At least the thread won't be boring and without mistakes!
Pebs - March 5, 2008 08:10 PM (GMT)
thanks for making the thread interesting HP
and nope, thats not the answer.

my maths sucks but here's my guess:
"There are seven girls on a bus and each girl has seven backpacks. In each backpack there are seven big cats. For every seven big cats, there are seven little cats."
(7x2)+ (49 x 7 x 4) + (7 x 7 x 4) = 14 + 1372 + 196 = 1582
that's a lot of legs
(although i'm sure it's wrong.....)

Gav - March 5, 2008 08:25 PM (GMT)
Is this something to do with the fact cats don't have feet, they have paws? Making the answer 14? And if there is a driver as well as the girls...then 16?
Dinky Jo - March 5, 2008 08:26 PM (GMT)
can i ask - when you say "for every 7 big cats there are 7 small cats" do you mean for EVERY big cat there is 7 small cats or for every 7 big cats there are 7 small cats???

I read it as for every big cat there are 7 small cats....which is a lot!

ok, that's where my sums went wrong......

There are seven girls on a bus and each girl has seven backpacks. In each backpack there are seven big cats. For every seven big cats, there are seven little cats.
Ok - 7 girls = 14 legs
49 backpacks - each backpack contains 14 cats
686 cats = 2744
Still the same result! :yikes:
SaraLess - March 5, 2008 08:31 PM (GMT)
Oh, I think I read it wrong too...quelle surprise!

I go 2760, cos the driver has two legs :D
Unless a cat is driving then it's 2762 legs
Gav - March 5, 2008 08:31 PM (GMT)
ok this is how I see it then (if cats do indeed have feet)
there are 7 * 7 * 7 big cats = 343
and 7 * 7 * 7 * 7 small cats = 2401
and seven girls
so feet = (7*2) + (343 * 4) + (2401 * 4) = 10990 feet (and two more if there is a separate driver)
Dinky Jo - March 5, 2008 08:32 PM (GMT)
(7x2)+ (49 x 7 x 4) + (343 x 7 x 4) = 14 + 1372 + 9604 = 10990

same result as me....
but I beat you to it :P :P
so it may be wrong....

:giggle:
it's entirely possible - my maths is appalling..... :P
but i do need to ask - firstly, how big are these girls, are they weightlifters or something? secondly, how big are the back packs? putting that many cats in a back pack has got to be animal cruelty! thirdly, how big is this bus???

I don't think it's that because each of the 7 big cats have 7 small cats....well that's how I read it.
Although to be honest as Jo mentioned that's gotta bne one big bus. Imagine the smell :o
SuperBRAT - March 5, 2008 08:49 PM (GMT)
The answer is none in another logic puzzle cos a bus doesn't have legs.

sorry - it wasnt clear was it? for every big cat, there is seven small cats...
but you got there in the end... 10990 is the correct answer
and I also threw down my pencil in disgust and said you wouldnt get them all on the bus anyway
when doing my calculations - I kept forgetting there was seven backpacks..

I tried that at first and Mr Pebs told me off and to start making notes on amounts of cats...
