What's up with Venus? Can't even get past the 1st round at a Tier 3 tournament??

Where is DL- not gonna be happy. Tati also lost!

liam_valid - February 27, 2008 02:40 PM (GMT)
I suppose results like this justify why Venus should just play the big tournaments. I really wanted her to play Lindsay here though :(

Duchess - February 27, 2008 04:29 PM (GMT)
Sorry to hear about Venus & Tatiana.

What is it with Venus and East European teenagers? :yikes:

She is playing far too many low tier events and this startegy is backfiring big time. Venus needs to be mixing it with the top players...

jack.hl.ng - February 27, 2008 06:00 PM (GMT)
yeah bad result for venus. says on WTA website "For Williams, it was the worst loss in terms of ranking in her Sony Ericsson WTA Tour career."
It was only a year ago when she won, and they were saying about her flawless results at tier III tournaments. I can see why she played here though as she is defending champion.

3) Shahar Peer (ISR) d. Melinda Czink (HUN) 60 36 62
Peer through to QF.

All right Peer!!!! Maybe Venus is in the same "funk" as Mauresmo?

well that seems unlikely, Venus's problem is playing far too many low tier events. Venus plays her best when she is playing the best not when she is playing people ranked outside the top 100. Why she insists on playing tier III and IVs is beyond me...

Duchess - February 27, 2008 06:46 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the info choka. :D

vivahate - February 27, 2008 08:28 PM (GMT)
way to go Venus, why don't you just hand Linds the title

i know Linds has won a few tournies upon her return, but haven't they been crap-ass ones?? is she playing them to bump up her ranking?? we all know she's better than III's and IV's...

yeah well you can understand Lindsay doing it to get her ranking up but why Venus, Wimbledon champion and world number 8, seems to be playing tier III and IVs is beyond me...

I find it quite strange as well. I can't understand the logic especially at this time of the season, when her last tourney was in Dubai, now she's back in Memphis and off to Bangalore next week to play in a tier III tourney.

When Kvitova was playing in Paris, she did beat Medina Garrigues and took Dementieva to a tie-break and the commentators said that her short-term goal was to make the top 30 but either way, you wouldn't have expected her to defeat Venus so easily. Maybe if she's lost her form, it's quite a good idea she's not competing against the creme of the WTA.

She almost exclusively played on the tier III and tier IV circuit after Wimbledon last year!

yeah it's a bizarre schedule which makes Jankovic's seem positively sane...
( Bangalore has been upgraded to a Tier II)

Oops - my mistake.

Bangalore should be a decent tourney (Venus and Serena, Schnyder, Szavay, Bammer, Zvonareva, Kirilenko and four other top 50 players inc. Cibulkova).

yup, and jankovic playing Bangalore after Sania Mirza's withdrawal.

Its a shame Venus has been playing so many smaller tournaments, i remember she won a few, and lost in a final last year to Razzano.
But Bangalore should be good preparation for Venus for Miami, as the sisters always boycott the IW event. Hope she will pick bigger tournaments soonish....
