Title: Best Single Slam Winners
liam_valid - February 13, 2008 01:34 AM (GMT)
Sorry, ive blatantly nicked this off the ATP section but i like the concept. I suppose the one in recent memory would be Clijsters, but could she be called the best one slam wonder, when imo she was capable of much more? Novotna will be probbly remembered more for her sobbing than her one GS win. Martinez could be considered good because she won her one slam on her least favourite surface against one of the all time greats Martina. What do you guys think?

I'd lean towards Clijsters given how many finals she reached and that she got to number 1. Plus she reached the final of 3 of the 4 slams and looked very dominant at times.
Novotna I've never been a huge fan of and outside Wimbledon she had limited success in slams - Final of the AO once, but off the top of my head I think she only made the semis of RG & the US Open twice each which is poor for a long career.
Martinez only made 3 slam finals in her career and was soundly beaten in two of those. For me she was more of a solid player who had one brilliant tournament.
Sabatini had her moments but I think she was a little too inconsistent to be considered ahead of Clijsters

Kim Clijsters prety much for the reason GS2 just went through.

Novotna becauase she was so great on grass and in dramatic fashion eventually won through as she should have done, a bit like Goran did in the end overcomign demons and all :ok: A great tennis moment.
Not keen on Martinez and Clijsters just bored me to death and played some awful matches in the closing stages of slams.

Yes good point, its the occasion as well as quality of tennis .
I can hardly remember Martinez winning but who will forget Novotna and her emotional win .
Just like the flamboyant Noah beating the boring Wilander in front of his home crowd , a great moment.

Well yes, it's the big moments folks remember rather than consistent showing in QFs and routine matches. I reacl Martinez, she beat Nav and I was disgusted and booed!

Depends what we mean by best. On the men's, I went for Krajicek over Goran because I think he played the better tennis - although statistically Goran reached more Slam finals and had slightly more success.
By the same logic, I really don't want to nominate Clijsters for this one, even if she is the obvious choice. Like SB said, she played boring tennis, had a habit of winning every match she was expected to win easily, then losing every match she was expected to lose quite easily - and none of them made interesting viewing. Like Goran, I think she was born to be a runner up - rather than born to be a winner, but falling short for whatever reason. My choice would go to Sabatini. :ok:

Sabatini won a Grand Slam title??? Don't know how I missed that.

Clijsters for me too. Yeah, she is known for mental weakness, but whenshe won the US Opens, she defeated No1 Maria and recent Wimby winner Venus en route!
GS2 outlined the reasons well.

Duchess, Sabatini won the 1990 US Open, beating Steffi Graf in the final.
I would also go with Sabatini. She should have won the Wimbledon final in 1991 against Graf when she served for the match twice. She won the Masters (WTA Championships) at least 3 times I believe. She also won the Italian Open a couple of times. Did she win doubles in grand slams?
I don't think anyone would consider Conchita Martinez the best one slam winner but she also had a significant career.
The only Spanish woman to win Wimbledon, runner up at the Australian Open and French Open - winner of the Federation Cup a couple of times - and an amazing achievement of winning the Italian Open four times in a row.

Im with SB on this. The minute I saw this title Novotna automatically popped out in my head.Though Martinez is also quite a good contender as she made 3 of the four slam finals.
:ok:

If we're going by the size of legs, Kuznetsova wins by a log, or I should say two logs.

ha ha ha :lmaao: roflmao Juan!!!! *off topic* I'm no fitness expert but Sveta needs to work on her arms and upper body when she's weight training. Just like Rafael Nadal needs to work on his legs and lower body.
