T01 - February 11, 2008 02:49 PM (GMT)
Three times champion Amelie is not there to defend her title. May be she is content with the diamond racquet she won last year! Well... she will slip out of top 20 now.

Common Justine, win the home tourny once at least!

Duchess - February 11, 2008 10:50 PM (GMT)

I'd like to see Na Li do well here.
Shame Mauresmo isn't playing and is gonna slip further down the rankings. I hope she get get up there again in time for the FO and Wimbledon so she doesn't meet the top seeds in earlier rounds. I have a feeling that she won't be playing for much longer..

I hope not cos she's my fave on tour. :(

I do wonder though if maybe after winning 2 slams in a year, her first slams ever at fairly a late age, then coming back and having problems again has made her wonder if it's all worth it. At least she won Wimby though, cos it woudl have been a travesty if she hadn't with her game.

dl04 - February 12, 2008 02:39 PM (GMT)
Mauresmo's just lost her vigour and confidence IMO. There just seems to be a shell out there nowadays, with a few glimpses of a former world number 1, but it's so intermittent. I mean watching her completely capitulate against Dellacqua at the Aussie was such a downfall for the woman who had looked so sharp there only a couple of years ago.

I dont think it's anything physical, i mean she always looks in supreme shape and still has the fantastic forecourt game, but i think that more perilously for Mauresmo is that she's not in the mindset of a champion anymore, and it shows.

It'd be a shame for her to end her career in freefall down the rankings, and who knows she could still well have a great Wimbledon again, but herfuture is unclear that's for sure.

vivahate - February 12, 2008 02:49 PM (GMT)
Mauresmo's slide down the rankings is truely baffling and totally unexpected

c'mon Dani, go one better here and win the title :)

Duchess - February 12, 2008 05:24 PM (GMT)
I'm no expert, but I'm sure Amelie has a few more years left in her.

liam_valid - February 13, 2008 01:59 AM (GMT)
So much for Szavay  one good tourny then she loses to Kleybanova (me neither). As much as people criticise Chakvetadze (me included) at least she is one of the few players that can be consistant nowadays. Bondaernko loses to the delightfully named Julie Ditty, who i only know of because Lindsay whomped her a while back on her return

I think this pretty much sums it up..

I hope she does pull it together, maybe she doesn't have the will anymore..

Awwww Anna C is out :( :( :( :(

Still at least she won a title last week-put it down to fatigue. Anna is definitely back on track :yep:

Anyway Choka, care to remind us the last title Jelena Chokovic won a title
:P :P

nevets - February 15, 2008 01:30 PM (GMT)
Wow - Patty has turned her match around. When I left, she was 30 down in the 3rd set and her forehand was in absolute meltdown, against Knapp but she's closed the gap

It's currently 62 67 66 (41).

nevets - February 15, 2008 01:35 PM (GMT)
Knapp won 62 67 76 against Schnyder. Not entirely sure why I was getting so excited a few moments ago!

I'm a big softie for a stalwart! But she must be the youngest 29-year-old (or is she 30 now), I've ever seen!

dl04 - February 15, 2008 02:37 PM (GMT)
Patty the headcase strikes again :crazy1: roflmao

wins the tiebreak 7-1, then goes 4-0 and 5-2 down, rallies back to 5-5 and serves for the match at 6-5, fails to putaway easy smashes and then loses the tiebreak 7-2. She's such a mentallist i swear to god

Anyway the tour's starting to realise how ineffectual Patty's game is on hardcourts nowadays. That incessant loopy topspin is just asitting duck against such sturdy hitters like Knapp. Great win for the Italian, showed so much resolve in the tiebreak after the dissapointment of losing her lead in the third. Has such a raw game, which if it becomes more structured is going to be a potent style on tour.

nevets - February 15, 2008 03:25 PM (GMT)
It's one set apiece in the Hantuchova v Bacsinsky game (26 64).

T01 - February 15, 2008 04:50 PM (GMT)
Dani retired trailing 1-4..
Oh well, all the top seeds have been dropping.. except Justine!

Totally agree with you nevets :ok: When I first saw her picture (two years ago when I got back into following tennis) I thought she was about 16!!! Sorry to hear she lost. Hantuchova v Henin???-that would be a good match.

Manzikert - February 15, 2008 06:22 PM (GMT)
Pfeh. The draw wasn't all that promising to begin with before all these upsets, but now....

Szavay and Chakvetadze had nothing left after the Paris final apparently (I seem to recall during they were each visited by the trainer), and now Hantuchova. Schnyder is not so much of an 'upset' these days unfortunately (although from what dl says she had some classic mental lapses in the match), and Bammer has been in a downward spiral, having trouble recovering the form of her breakout season last year. I would say let's fast-foward to a Henin v Li final but I'm not sure if Li can avoid the upset bug herself!

Still, Henin was already the heavy favourite for the title (despite the rusty start with Pironkova, who has a knack for making trouble when you least expect it), on top of already being the home favourite, and she hasn't won the event since it was her very first title back in 1999, so there's some sentimental value in it. She'll be making nice with the Flemish as well. B)

It's a shame that Mauresmo didn't want to take a whirl as defending champion, although given her (lack of) results for some time I can see why. Not to mention it's tough to top winning a diamond-encrusted racket. :P

Scotsguy - February 16, 2008 12:24 PM (GMT)
Bacsinsky is 3-0 up against Henin-expect Henin to win 6 gsmes in a row now

vivahate - February 16, 2008 12:34 PM (GMT)
too bad for Dani

Scotsguy - February 16, 2008 12:40 PM (GMT)
Henin broke back for 3-2

But is now 15-40 down....saves 1 break point with a tense rally....

Henin has won 2 points on her 2nd serve and with a 47% first serve that is not good.....

Double Fault gives the break again....

*4-2 for Baczinsky...

Scotsguy - February 16, 2008 12:48 PM (GMT)
3 set points for Baczinsky

2 service winners from Henin save the first 2.....

2nd serve on the third-and a backhand error sends Baczinsky wins the set 6-2.

7 winners to 1 error from Timea

Scotsguy - February 16, 2008 01:05 PM (GMT)
Henin saves 5 Break points to go 2-0 up in the second set.

Scotsguy - February 16, 2008 01:33 PM (GMT)
Baczinsky's fortitiude is laughable, she has 2 break points to even the set at 4-4 but mishits twice to lose the game

2-6 5-3*30-30

Scotsguy - February 16, 2008 01:36 PM (GMT)
And then predictably gets broken-disappointing stuff....
