Title: Sweeney Todd
WimbledonAce - January 26, 2008 07:55 PM (GMT)
Anyone else seen it yet? I went to see it last weekend and thought it was great. I may be slightly biased as I am a big Depp fan but he was great as usual. Plus I think Burton is always pretty spot on as a director. Helena Bonham-Carter was also very good in her role.
BIG-TODGER - January 27, 2008 01:57 AM (GMT)
Well Stephen Sondheim is a hero of mine, and Tim Burton-well i am really looking forward to this........and i love pork pies!
WimbledonAce - January 27, 2008 03:08 PM (GMT)
It is pretty funny in places. Certainly a bit different! :ok:
Buttercup - January 30, 2008 09:06 AM (GMT)
I feel you Johanna
I feel you
Do they think that walls can hide you?
Even now I'm at you window
I am in the dark beside you
Buried sweetly in your yellow hair
Johanna
I loved it, but dont think i'll be eating meat pies for a while yet...

I'm going to see this on monday :yahoo:
SuperBRAT - January 30, 2008 12:31 PM (GMT)
I won't be going off to see i cos I hate cinemas :D But I'll be interested to see hwo it works on video. I am a huge fan of musicals but I have to say I haven't seen one that worked in modern times. Evita was OK but nto great, although I might have been biased becuase I realyl like Another Suitcase in Another Hall and the Argentina song. You see the old ones work because they have great songs and they are classics now, so we know them when we watch. I do like Johnny Depp cos he is versatile though and I love Tim Burton (except Planet of the Apes :argh: ) - Nightmare Before Xmas is my fave. But i loath that awful woman Bonham Carter :sicky: So I have mixed feelings!

I know Jo, he made a BIG mistake marrying her as far as some fans are concerend. :lmaao: I hated he rin POTA - she refused to wear the make up unles sit make her look pretty - silly c*w. And she is nto a patch on Kim Hunter in the originals. In fact i think Burton made a huge mistake touching a great classic, and also Mark Wahlberg was crap!

I never saw Planet of the Apes, but I don't think she's that bad - she was good in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Fight Club, oh and she was awesome as Bellatrix Lestrange in the latest Harry Potter :ok: I've never really read or seen any interviews with her though so I don't know how she comes across as a person.

I've onyl seen Fight Club in that lot. Didn't like it tbh. My mate loves it though. I'm nto sayign her acting is bad, I just can't stick her. I remeber years back - she used to be in these English films playign the same character - I think she wa sin a Room with a View?

Like i said, never really read any interviews with her so dunno how she comes across in those
but yeah, she did start off doing a few "english rose" type films - including a fair amount of Shakespeare

ooooo I want to see this film - I shall have to find a non wuss mate - most of my lot wont go see this type of film!
WimbledonAce - January 31, 2008 09:58 PM (GMT)
It's not that gruesome Pebs, the blood doesn't look real at all, although my boyf still closed his eyes! He is squeamish, hehe.
Helena was really good Sb, I liked her in Charlie as well. Was reading an interiew with her about Sweeney and apparently she was pregnant during it, did think her boobs were pretty obvious!!

apparently she was pregnant for part of filming, so the size of her boobs changes from scene to scene :giggle:

Tim Burton, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.. am a fan of all 3! :D
Mind you, the last film of Tim Burton's that I enjoyed was probably Sleepy Hollow, which was a while ago..
For a while I thought that Johnny Depp was amazing in everything that he did.. then he appeared in a few clunkers ( the Astronaut's Wife for example)
I saw Helena Bonham-Carter bering interviewed, and she is eccentric to say the least!! I do like her though; she's got far more about her than the vaccuuous Keira Knightly and various other Brit wannabe actresses.
I think that her and Tim Burton are a great match tbh. Much better than Lisa Marie, I think. HB-C did start off in the likes of Room with a View (fabulous film!) and Howard's End. However, I really thought that she was sensational in The Wings of a Dove and 12th Night. An underrated actress, tho I didn't see Planet of the Apes (didn't fancy it) nor Fight Club..
As for Sweeney Todd? Will maybe check it out. Burton and Depp peaked with Ed Wood imo, and maybe I'll end up measuring all of their films to that, so will have to temper any disappointment.

Cheers WA :) I shall drag some unsuspecting mate along to it - in fact, my bestest chum suggested we go out next Weds - I might mention Sweeney Todd to her followed by a meal at Sweeney Todds - they do the best pies! :D

Have just been to see this and it's really really good!!! :D Pebs - Johnny Depp looks just so gorgeous you can forgive him for being a completed demented murderer.......he can also sing!   Alan Rickman is perfect as always, although pretty much manages to be a grey Snape - but he does it so well I'll let it slide. Sacha Baron Cohen was surprisingly good as well :ok: And HB-C was very good as well, seemed to fit the role perfectly, although her singing wasn't as good as Depp's I didn't think. There's also a couple of good performances from some newcomers, and I think it's impressive they managed to hold their own against Depp and HB-C
Burton managed to create such a dingy and dark London, it was pretty much all in black and white except for the blood  And yes, there's blood - a lot of it, but it looks so damn fake that it's actually kinda laughable. There were a couple of :o moments, but generally the goryness was just over-the-top.
And the singing in general - to be honest I got to the point where it annoyed me when they weren't singing  It just seemed so wrong when they spoke sometimes - especially Depp......
All in all, I would say go and see it - it's awesome!!!! B)
