Title: Well done Maria!
trisco - January 26, 2008 04:41 AM (GMT)
She is surely undoubtedly the deserved winner,
Taken out a whole list of potentials.... well done to her.
I'd put more praise but my keyboard is playing up....

Half asleep.... but Well done Maria   :yahoo:
Best player in the tournament won it for sure. Not a vintage performance but at least after having injury spoil her performance last year, causing many to doubt her future, she produced the goods....certainly against the dominant Justine!
Commiserations to Ana. This girl will win slams, it just wasn't her day. Great tournament though.  |
....but I'll add she did more than just take out a list of potentials. She thrashed the dominant and deserved world number 1. :ok:

Well done, Maria!
It wasn't a pulsating final but Maria has been the best player in the women's tourney - the way she pulverised Henin in the quarter-finals will be my memory of the women's game but I love Ana too and hope she wins a GS this year :D I was almost blubbing up during her acceptance speech!
Can't wait for Nole v Tsonga but I think 8.15am on a Sunday morning is a bit too early for me, even if tennis is concerned! :P ;)

Great stuff  If she can just get that FO title now my prediction will come true

She wasnt injured last year.
Scotsguy - January 26, 2008 11:08 AM (GMT)
I'm so happy today, after the stick Maria took after last year's final and then further performances I think it's great that she has once again proved she's the ultimate competitor and this time she's got the game to back it up. No great final but better than the 4 thrashings we had last year in terms of excitement, so probably the best final in that respect since the US Open 2006-which was a very high quality match....
Maria should be heading back to her No.2 spot but then again Venus and Serena may start to get doubted again which means we will see them shoot back up for X amount of time.....but I think Sharapova has shown she's the genuine Russian No.1.......

Yes she was she was serving at 90 mph with a 40% first serve, that's not the real Maria Sharapova-she was definitely injured last year and she's proved that by beating Ivanovic twice now without her shoulder injury....

well if her injury was that bad, she really shouldnt have been playing...
nevets - January 26, 2008 11:42 AM (GMT)
Sharapova didn't play that much last year. She had about a 6 week period without playing in the winter after the Oz Open. Maria only played once between the US Open and Tour Champs and I think she only played two tourneys between Wimbledon and the US Open.

Her shoulder was a problem, but not a massive injury...it meant her serves were not as potent though, and you can easily see the difference this year. Last year early on I think she was pretty much trying to play hoping it would improve it to be honest.

I actually read Maria's post match interview and she comes across really well.
maybe she isn't so bad afterall... :P
And she hasn;t cheated since the French Open 2007 so if she goes till the French this year without cheating I won't call her The Cheat anymore... :D :ok:

she deserved it. i don't particularly like the girl but you have to give her the credit she deserves. a worthy champion.

So she's got to get through the next 4 months without cheating and you may call her Maria.....?? Hmmm, If I was Maria I'm not sure I could do that.
Let's not forget that utterly fantastic saying.....
"If you can't win.......cheat" :yep: :yep: :D :D

Has anybody noticed that when maria gets given an easy draw for a slam she messes it up but as soon as she's given a tougher one she wins it....

I'm sure that'll mean a lot to her ...
But the real question is, of course, who will inherit her title ... Djokovic for ball-bouncing and injury timeouts ... Ivanovic for her 'squeaky shoes' ... I can hardly wait ... :P

Credit to Maria for getting it together and coming back esp after last year's humiliation in the final  I twa showever a boring spectacle to say the least.

Well done Maria indeed. I am not really a fan of her, but she has come acorss wisely and nicely on her interviews and in her speach on the stage. Good luck to her. Does this mean we will see the others will start to defeat Justine now??
Svetlana?? what a cow, she had an excellent draw till the semis and she blew it away. She is not really a worthy No2, and she is not anymore..
vivahate - January 28, 2008 02:03 PM (GMT)
did anyone else see that Sharapova mentioned receiving a text from Billie Jean King before the match...something along the lines of 'Champions take chances, pressure is a privilege'.
great words, from a great champion of the sport. Maria clearly took them to heart.
barrystar - January 28, 2008 02:19 PM (GMT)
Aye - well done Sharapova. I've not been a big fan of her conduct or her game, but it's very impressive how she's just worked away to such success after a disappointing 2007.
It's difficult to remember that she is still only 20 (dob 19.4.87), and a bit less than 7 months older than Ana Ivanovic (dob 6.11.87), yet she is incomparably the more experienced of the two. For the record, it's also worth comparing Sharapova's age with that of those other 'up-and coming' Serbs, Jelena Jankovic (dob. 28.2.95) who is older, and Djokovic (dob. 22.5.87) who is only a month younger.
It sounds stupid for someone who is so famous and well known, but the depth of her success on the tennis court at such a young age does rather 'come in under the radar' - perhaps it's all the other baggage that goes with it.
Whilst I am being "stato" I read in the London Times the other day that her record of 10 GS semis is more than the total reached at that age by Venus, Serena, and Henin combined - about 7or 8.
Anyway, it looks as though she will be a person to beat for a long time from now on.

I really hope so BS.
I know she isn't liked by probably as many as she is liked by but it's glad to see her contending and winning GS's. With the Serb's kicking ass too we should be in for a few good years tennis. :ok:
