Title: Who will win the final?
Description: Tsonga vs Djokovic
Scotsguy - January 25, 2008 11:22 AM (GMT)
The final nobody expected. Nadal and Federer dumped in the semis in straigh sets each we will have a first time GS winner. So who is going to win and then post a reason for your post if you want.
Dinky Jo - January 25, 2008 11:45 AM (GMT)
this is such a tough call  I really have no idea
Gav - January 25, 2008 11:47 AM (GMT)
Djoko 3 sets to 1.
Tsonga played a better semi than Djoko, but Djoko was up against King Rog and has been to a final before. I think Tsonga will hold his own, but be outfought.
Tenez - January 25, 2008 11:57 AM (GMT)
It's got to be Djoko no doubt, but I voted for Tsonga because this is what I want to happen. he is the only one that can salvage this AO for me!.
Having Nick Bolitieri winning both finals (men and Women) will be too much for me!

i didn't know Djoko had trained at Bollitteri's academy - I know Jankovic did

I am not sure either but the style is the same: Sharapova, Ivanovic, Jankovic, Getmeboredtodeathvic, and the rest....

I think Tsonga has a good chance. Today i took a day off from work and watched a reply of yesterdays semi before the other semi. I have to say Tsonga's level was a mile ahead of all the other semifinalists.
If Tsonga consolidate this level i can see him winning the final in straight sets.

according to what I can find in a brief net search, Jankovic trained with Bollitieri. Ivanovic trained in Basel, SZ, and Djokovic trained in Germany but is now coached by a Crotian I think

It could be a great story if Tsonga were to win but I can't see it happening. As said many times, anybody can look good playing Nadal, even Murray looked an agressive player against him last year but it does not mean that Djoko will allow as much agression and may put Tsonga on the defensive foot first.
I am sometimes wrong but I made some good money gambling over the years!

Have you seen Ivanovic or Jankovic play recently? Even Sharapova has been mixing it up a lot this tournament, far from mindless ball bashing.
I've gone for Djokovic in three sets, as I feel his performance in reaching this stage has been every bit as impressive as Tsonga's (he's not dropped a set yet against 3 or 4 dangerous opponents). However, I don't think Tsonga will choke like Gonzo or Baghdatis did in the last two years, so a victory for him wouldn't be too surprising, but experience will probably prevail on the day.

Thanks Dinky but as said the training camps have reproduced the same method.

To be honest no. But I saw Sharapova v Henin and it was Boli's trade mark!

I've not seen too many Jankovic matches, but she's always struck me as a fairly imaginitive counter puncher. And Ivanovic definitely used to have the "baseline basher" reputation, but she's far from it now. Good backhand to go with the forehand, reliable backhand slice and most importantly of all for me - she often goes into the net to finish the point and her volleys have improved immeasurably.
As for Sharapova, she's certainly more of a "basher", but I've heard reports she's been playing drop shots and slices and all sorts to get this far?
Tenez - January 25, 2008 12:24 PM (GMT)
I agree about your view on Jankovic actually Wise.
Regarding Shara mixing it a bit more, maybe but like Djoko, it does not look very natural.
laurie - January 25, 2008 12:50 PM (GMT)
I'm going to be bold and say Tsonga will win the final on Sunday.
Dinky Jo - January 25, 2008 12:58 PM (GMT)
Considering that the Serbs have 2 players in the finals, and had another one in the women's semis - I'd love to see what their homecoming is like. When they returned home after FO/Wimby last year the place went crazy - I don't know how they'll top that if either Ana or Nole wins
I'm gonna say Djoko will win, but I think it will be close.....

Agree. Liek when she ran to the net in oen match and all she had to do was touch the ball to drop it over the net. What did she do? Twoahnded smash volley and put it outside the court.

Ill agree with Djoko, as I just think he'll not let Tsonga play as well as he did against Nadal. If its about baseline rallies then Djoko will win I feel.

What an exciting Aussie Open this has been! It's been a long time since anyone other than Fed/Nadal has won a Slam. I'd still like to see Fed make history by beating Sampras' mark of 14 Slams, but it's fun to see a little more competition out there. :ok:

My heart wants Jo T, but Novack will probably win. Give us a five-setter boys!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

I believe they said 8:30am UK time, but don't quote me on that one. It's odd that the ladies final is on in the middle of the night and that isn't though?!?

And if he can win it Murray and Tim won't look so bad for losing to him . ;)

I did the same - I would love for Tsonga to win this - and voted for that but I reckon Djoko will just edge it.
But either way, a good match is in the offing I am sure :D
vivahate - January 25, 2008 06:29 PM (GMT)
i suspect Tsonga will be overcome by the occasion just enough for Novak to win in straights.

i admire the fighting qualities of novak djokovic but i passionately want jo-wilfried tsonga to win this match.
novak's time will come without doubt but this might be J-W's one bite at the cherry. and the brand of tennis he brings to the court is the most exciting thing i've seen in ages. he's like the best of roddick and henman rolled into one. and he is my boy. he is my boy.

Well, 3-1 Djoko it is .
Tsonga - what a talent , but Djoko was just too solid today. He deserved it even if he did spend more time bouncing the ball than playing :D
Duchess - January 28, 2008 05:46 PM (GMT)
Congratulations to Novak D-1st Grand Slam title is always exciting!!! :yahoo: :D
