Dark_Necrofear™ - January 22, 2008 10:29 AM (GMT)
Wow is all I can say for Masha. What a match and a performance. She really overpowered Justine.
6-4 6-0. Thats destruction.

If Masha keeps playing like that she could dominate the women's tour this year, she just looked awesome.
I'm amazed the match turned out to be so one sided-looks to me as though Sharapova has really improved a few things in the off season

Wow! that's what I like to hear! Maria dominating the tour! Just to prove a point to people who doubt her. :ok:
Here's to the Maria Slam this year! ;)

I think we may be alone on the board as Maria supporters Gav!
We'll just have to get pissed together to celebrate her victory. I know some good clubs ;)
I'll ask Maria if she is coming too for you in her S.I. photoshoot get-up ;)

I liked Maria too... until someone better looking came along. B)2
I actually still like her and feel she gets way too much unnecessary criticism. The shrieking is a little absurd, and her on court antics have sometimes left something to be desired, but you can say that for 95% of WTA players. It's great to see her bounce back from her year from hell in 2007 and prove a lot of people wrong.
As an aside, people can witter on about the women's game being predictable all they like. The men's game might have more strength in depth and more interesting matches in the first week, but the strength at the top of the women's game is much stronger than the men's, as Jankovic and Maria demonstrated today.

I was just thinking the same last night after the Jankovoc match, the slams at the latter stages are much more open on the women's side and they have been for some time I feel.
I think the men's side is becoming a little less one-sided, Djoko, Nadal, Nalby and even Murray will I think all be snapping at Roger's heels this year.
Should be an interesting year on both tours. :ok:

yep - I think on the men's side there tend to be some good matches early on, but at the moment it's all about hoping that whoever gets to the final gives Fed a good match  The later stages of the men's side have definitely not (so far) been as interesting as the women's side......
BIG-TODGER - January 22, 2008 11:21 AM (GMT)
Hang on i love Maria too,
well apart from the ear splitting shrieking of course, and the relentless ball bouncing-cunningly contrived to discombobulate her opponents,
her relentless ineptitude at the net, and her vanity verging on narcissism
ok she's good looking but she's no ivanovic.
And the real clincher she's too damn tall, tall women don't do it for me-i prefer em pocket size!
ok i can't stand her, but she still played damn well today

Dark_Necrofear™ - January 22, 2008 02:44 PM (GMT)
Well despite her great performance and me cheering her on I still cant stand her.But she is a lovely person off court as demonstrated in her interviews. But she will not dominate Venus if they are to meet.I hope Venus can edge through, I really do.

Was a good match, you can watch it online at the BBC website or on BBCi.. Maria just didn't let Justine play, good solid hitting from her and Justine was gracious in defeat and said that herself.
Duchess - January 22, 2008 04:50 PM (GMT)
:o :o :o Oh my gosh, Justine is human after all!!! trisco-"gracious in defeat"-another reason to just love that girl. Gav-hard to believe that incredibly hot woman in the polka-dot bikini is the same screaming, annoying creature that just tears up a tennis court. :D

Nice to see Maria doing well after 2007.
Although her tennis is a bit one-style for me and the screaming drives me nuts, the majority of the players today play that style and it's WTA's fault for not muzzling Seles.
I'd wish her good luck but I want Ana to win it all ;)

have to agree wtih you there tim-if the ladies and gentlemen aren't screaming they're moaning and groaning quite loudly-I have a hard time watching matches because of that.

I'm not - I expected Justine to lose the minute I saw her 1st round.
Something is bothering her and I don't know what it is. :(
1. This tournament doesn't bring good memories (2006)
2. This time last year she was going through a divorce.
Who knows? All I know is that her form is crap at the moment. Hopefully as we all know, when she loses, she comes back with a vengeance
I'm not worried at all. I'm glad she lost - she was getting complacent

Some reporter supposedly said that her knee was bothering her-is that true?
Scotsguy - January 25, 2008 01:08 AM (GMT)
I was sooooooo happy after this match- I grinned for the rest of the day pretty much....I mean Maria played so incredibly well and she ended Justine's streak (which was an amazing thing from JH) and it was after her year from hell......It just made me giggle with excitement...which is a little sad.....
T01 - January 25, 2008 07:15 AM (GMT)
Maria was also that last person to send JH packing at QF stages - at Miami in 2005 - JH's first tournament back from injuries..
lalitha - January 25, 2008 11:50 AM (GMT)
No probs...she'll be back with a bang...apparently she has really injured her knee...she doesn't always gives excuses does she? Atleast she didn't say that her opponent made some 'lucky shots' ;)
And of course she herself said no excuses foe her defeat and that maria definitely played better
