Title: Serena Yanked By Jankovic
Dark_Necrofear™ - January 22, 2008 05:43 AM (GMT)
In a turn of events for Jelena's miserable run thusfar, she had a surprisingy straight sets win over Serena thus yanking her out of the tournament. 6-3 6-4. A match that had break after break after break.Well Done Jelena. If she is to face Justine, lets hope that she can actually win this time against her.

And so Jankovic is through to her third Slam semi (leaving Wimbledon as the only one she hasn't reached), defeating defending champ Serena 6-3, 6-4. What an effort. The scoreline doesn't tell the whole story, with so many games (especially in the second set) locked at deuce several times over, and long, tense rallies aplenty. Well done.
Unfortunately Serena was subpar, only showing flashes of the form she had demonstrated all week. This has been the case in every Slam since winning this event last year, enough so that I no longer think it was simply a Henin issue or fitness issue after all, but a Serena issue. It is some sort of quarterfinal syndrome she needs to work through, where she arrives sluggish, off-kilter and visibly struggling with her own body and emotions. I'd like to see her do it soon since I still think she has several titles left in her.
For her part, for someone whose prospects were written off not only before the AO but especially after her epic narrow escape from Paszek on opening day, Jankovic was looking sharp indeed. She did everything she needed to out there and stayed positive, her stellar defence seeing her through as always but also exploiting openings wherever they arose, betraying tension only when trying to serve for the match at 5-3 (being limply broken to 15) and looking stunned and elated after converting her very first match point. I almost thought Serena was on the verge of staging a Miami-esque fightback (she was actually at 40-15 with game points for evening the set 5-all, which would have made it a very different match in all probability) but it didn't materialise.
She has to be, after Henin of course, the Williams sisters' chief nemesis, having now knocked out both Venus and Serena as defending champs from Slams. Nevertheless, Jankovic will be the heavy underdog against either Sharapova or Henin, although she did record one win over the former last year and as we know has often pushed the latter (though not recently anymore). If Ivanovic falls tomorrow, I think Jankovic will reach the No 2 spot for the first time (I have yet to do the maths), and if she prevails, I imagine the buzz over the potential for an all-Serb final (as with RG last year) will begin anew. |
From Manzikert. :ok:

Yeah, quite shocked by this. I thought Serena had Jankovic's number and I thought Jankovic just wasn't in great form at all. It will be interesting to see what Jankovic can do against the winner of the Justine/Maria match.

Also lets see what Serena comes up with in her interview.
To be fair we need to call Serena something.. We used to call Maria the Semipova when lost in her semis. Quater pounder Serena or something..

What a dismal performance from Serena. Just nothing sparkling about her form at all, just such hap-hazard play all the way through  :(
There seemed to be some hint of an injury at 5-3 in the first where she started to roll the first serve in, and let Jankovic basically hit return winners at will. However after the first set, no signs of the apparent injury but just more wild play that had been so commonplace throughout the match. Awful court-positioning at times, especially when streched out-wide on the backhand side and just looked incapable of retrieving the ball back well enough to keep in the point. Forehand was just woeful at times too, just raking through the ball instead of flowing through it like we saw last year in the final. The only thing keeping Serena deep in the second set was her serve, which bailed her out of being down a double break, but it was so sporadic that it was never a weapon she could really depend on. Also looked so ungainly moving forward too, so tentative on the first volley, and more often than not picked off by superlative Jankovic passing shots.
However, nothingcan betaken away from Jankovic's performance. Looking sharper than shehas for months IMO, just playing such a methodical, well-exucted match that probably ranks highly as one of her best ever matches. Her backhand was on full scale assault out there, just pulling Serena all over the place with such deliberate angles and varied her forehand well too, often striking down the line to give herself an easy puttaway. Just so calm and didnt panic when Serena attempted to break back in the second. Definitely had a much more concise gameplan than Serena that's for sure.
I feel Jankovic will go in against Sharapova with nothing to lose now. I know it'sa cliche, but she's exceeded nearly everyone's expectations here in melbourne so will be more than a match for Sharapova i feel, if she can stick to the gameplan she displayed today.
It's a real shame for Serena though, a title defense would've really solidfied an awesome comeback from all her injury woes last season, but she just couldnt make it happen. If she stays fit for the rest of the year though, she's still going to be a huge factor on the tour.
So well done Jelena and looking forward to a great semi-final hopefully :D

the quarter final part is apt. Comparing her to a large quarter pounder is just plain insulting, especially given all the hard work she has put in recently to get back to peak fitness. I thought the burger jokes were so 2006 but looks like i was wrong again

Quality post dl  I didn't get to see this, but credit to Jelena and sad for Serena. I hope Jelena can trash Maria in the semis, although if she plays like today that will be pretty tricky. I don't see hwo Maria can keep up that level every match though.
