Title: Best GrandSLam TOurnament

Federer-Williams - January 19, 2008 06:09 PM (GMT)
I made this on MTF as well to see what people thought was in their opininos the single best GrandSLam tournament they seen.

Cause for me already one week into Auss it is so good with lots of 5 setters, lots of upsets but the main contenders still left, lots of extra drama (baghdatis inciddent, Fed sick, Nalb back) - it's just so fun and remember why I love tennis so much.

On MTF typical answers were AO 2005 and AO 2007...and I realised most of mine and incidentally evceryone elses best tournaments are AO (despite some saying its the lesser GS) always so much happening and despite the layoff exciting tennis.

If this is wrong place mods please move i not sure where to put it. SO whats your opinions.. I still think the Womans could get a bit more excitement for even more interest.

Wimbledon 2001 was a fantastic tournament and I seem to recall all the semi-finals and finals went to the maximum sets possible in the men's and women's singles draws. I can't remember another slam ever doing that...

I agree about AO 2005 and Wimbledon 2001 . AO 2007 was good but since Federer never lost a set the outcome was never in doubt. This years AO is shaping up to be one of the best for years .

Last Wimbledon was spoilt by the weather to a fair extent but we had a lot of 5 set classics like Henman-Moya, Gasquet-Roddick, Soderling-Nadal , Baghdatis-Djoko and of course the mens final one of the tensest I can remember watching .
It seems like the standard of tennis just keeps going up, at the moment there are so many great players in competition that to talk of it being a weak era is ridiculous.2008 looks like being one of the best years ever with Federer going for the all time record and being challenged more
than ever by the likes of Djokovic,Nadal and Nalbandian .

Yep :ok: And there were some good Wimbies years back too. In fact Wimby is by far my fave slam so I would have to go for that.

We have had some good battles it seems but all in all I haven't been impressed by the level of tennis thus far.....But I haven't watched Djoko yet.

For me it's actually turning into a bad GS. The final is likely to be Djoko / Federer semi (if of course, both hold their ranking).

Todays matches were pretty poor or non existant.

Of course me may have a fireworks finish in the final stages but tennis wise so far....nope. Not great.

Well I havent seen much of it yet but it does sound like the quality of tennis wasnt great though plenty of drama .

This tournament is turning out to be really great.I mean even third round matches are providing great entertainment...the exits of roddick and then baggy...all 5 set thrillers...probably this is the first time I stayed up for a Hewitt match this late and this early in the tourney. Certainly the quality has risen...the Kohlschreiber-Roddick match saw such short points...all brilliant serving.Again the 5 set marathon Fed-Tippy match was nothing short of a block-buster.Haven't seen Fed so relieved after a round three match..and then there was the distinct possibility of nadal taking over as no:1 if Fed lost this one..also this AO has revealed the depth in men's tennis...which infact is great...we haven't seen such good matches in the early rounds in last year's GS.
Now onto the women's tennis...this is more open as a matter of fact.Surely Justine is the one to beat like Federer. Then again we have the interesting QF bw shazza and Juju...and then the young serbs..the friendly Kuzzy(of course she's gone now) yes for sure we haven't seen marathon matches but we can't help agreeing with the fact that three setters always do not produce the magic of five setters. Again most of'em are baseliners we can expect much more in the second week.Again women's game is not seeing anyone's record being chasen...while looking at it within the framework of women's tennis and not comparing it with the women's we are bound to enjoy the women's game too...of course it helps that I'm a religious fan of Justine ;)

FO 2000 was my fave slam of recent years. FO was always my favourite slam but after the last 3 or 4 years i almost find it boring to watch, except maybe the mens final.

Yes - And again, disappointing 4th round today on the mens side. I don't understand how they managed to mess up the schedule like that with 2 covered courts and one day of rain only!

barrystar - January 21, 2008 06:13 PM (GMT)
On the men's side, Wimbledon 1992 was great for the following reasons (not necessarily in order)

* Jeremy Bates' improbable run to the 4th round during which he played some pretty good tennis (as I recall he had scheduled his wedding for the second saturday, showing what he thought of his chances)
* Agassi's wonderful win after such a thrilling final
* Greats like Becker, Edberg, McEnroe giving decent accounts of themselves in the draw, but handing the batten over to the next generation
* Ivanisevic's blast-fest against Sampras
* Act 2 in Agassi's thoroughly enjoyable love affair with the Wimbledon crowd

For those who don't remember, this is a summary of the men's draw: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1992_Wimbledo...n's_Singles

There was always the mens doubles final too that year B)

Thoroughly enjoying this tournament... it has sorta rekindled my passion for the game for reasons I can't quite put my finger on.
I'll post more tomorrow but off to bed. It isn't often I would stay up gone 4am watching the tennis so something about this tournament is grabbing me!
Good stuff. :ok:

I agree :ok: last years tournament had something special about it too. Nadal and Murrays match, Serenas amazing comeback. Apart from Gonzos final performance it was the best slam for ages :)

I enjoyed the USO 2005 as well :ok:

My favourite tourny is by far Wimbledon 2005. I mean obviously i'm biased because Venus won( :D ), but there were so many shocks, upsets and great matches. I can name loads:

Venus vs Davenport
Venus vs Sharapova
Davenport vs Mauresmo
Venus vs Pierce
Davenport vs Clijsters
Myskina vs Dementieva
Myskina vs Jankovic
Serena vs Haynes( very good shot-making)

Just great quality generally in the Slams in 05.

Tenez - February 7, 2008 11:47 AM (GMT)
In any case, I won't rank that AO 08 as a great one. I prefer high quality tennis over long battling matches. Besides the clinical demolition of Nadal by Tsonga, the rest hasn't left much in my memory.

Not sure Darky. A long and exciting match certainly but not vintage Federer.

Maybe i was watching a different match. Federer wasnt at his best but the quality coming off Tipsys racquet was a delight, and Federer responded with some quality of his own to eventually win. An awesome match
