Title: Day 5
Description: Friday 18th January
Dinky Jo - January 18, 2008 07:47 AM (GMT)
Dunno if anyone else agrees, but so far this half doesn't seem anywhere near as interesting as the other half? there's been no real upsets today, or even any tight matches.
All those below got through in straight sets:
Nadal
Davydenko
Tsonga
Youzhny
Still in progress we have:
Gasquet - who took the first 2 sets off Andreev 6-3, 6-2, it's on serve still in the third
The koubek vs Mathhieu match which actually is a tight match - a 5 setter. it's currently 5-5 in the 5th
Still to come we have:
Roddick vs Kohlschreiber
Fish vs Nieminen

Agree 100% - it seems very one sided to me. I do like Nadal, but he got it easy...so did Roddick...
PHM and Koubek fighting it out at the moment....
Dinky Jo - January 18, 2008 07:57 AM (GMT)
I have just read the match report of the Nadal match and apparently he saved 6 set points in the first set, but after that ran away with it.
but yeah, it does seem very one sided :nope:

faaaaaar too one sided - thats another day of 1s instead of 3s for me! I seem to have too much faith in their opponents getting a least one set to make it interesting!
*grumbles off to work*
Dinky Jo - January 18, 2008 08:06 AM (GMT)
Andreev took the third set off gasquet
*wonders if that will make pebs happy or not  *

that would be because you'd really like Gasquet to get through with ease, right pebs? nothing to do with your own predictions :hmm:
Tenez - January 18, 2008 09:32 AM (GMT)
I am indeed glad Gasquet won that match but he shoudl have won it in 3 ande having watched the 4th set, he was really exhausted and would have lost in 5 if it went to that. and again he wasted tons of BPs and shoudl have won that 4th set 61 or 62.
Anyway, let's not be too greedy, he showed some good fighting spirit there, despite being nackered. I don't understand why he tires so easily compared to other players.
Dinky Jo - January 18, 2008 09:38 AM (GMT)
well, considering lots of people were suggesting he'd lose to some nobody early on, i think he did pretty well to take out Andreev in 4 :ok:
Tenez - January 18, 2008 10:09 AM (GMT)
I am quite confident, he will take Tsonga out. Not because he is much better but because he is not scared of other French players and usually plays his best against them. I know he lost in Lyon this year against him but that was mostly due to injury.

:ok: They played in the fourth round at Wimbledon and a lot of people predicted an upset but I knew Gasquet would win in straights for that exact reason.
I'm not quite as confident about this match though, simply due to the heat - Tsonga will cope better. Gasquet needs to hope it's a night match or else get it done in 3... which might not be so easy since Tsonga's improved since Wimbledon. Then again, I've predicted against Gasquet in both his last two rounds and he's spectacularly proved me wrong.
Quick note to Stefan Koubek if he's reading this. Hi Stefan. f*ck you you choking, prediction ruining waste of space.
Dinky Jo - January 18, 2008 10:43 AM (GMT)
Nieminen took the second set from Fish in a tie-break.....
SaraLess - January 18, 2008 10:49 AM (GMT)
Fish is just such a nonentity.
Why don't they just put Roddick and Nadal through now, and be done with it. In fact, why didn't they just do that as soon as the lower half of this farcical draw was made?
:angry3:
Dinky Jo - January 18, 2008 10:58 AM (GMT)
it's weird though, 'cos when they released the draw i remember thinking that Nadal and Roddick had it fairly easy, but i don't remember thinking that the whole of this half looked *this* dull......
Tommorow's matches are much more interesting I think :ok: It will get interesting next week I'm sure

Because there is PHM and Korlschriber in their way. I believe we shoudl have 2 good matches there.

although as a side-note could i respectfully ask Mr Nieminen to kick Mr Fish's ass and not lose another set! Thank you ;)

you reckon Kohlschreiber can challenge Roddick???
Tenez - January 18, 2008 11:20 AM (GMT)
I definetely like to see how it goes. I think many players can take Roddick on actually. But I certainly don't underestimate his battling skills...certainly better than his tennis ones. :P

I was going to bypass this Roddick Kohlschreiber match but after Mr. Cabbage Writer has taken the first set I am very interested...
Still, I'd like to see Roddick take this one. :ok:

i'm in 2 minds really - i'd like to see Roddick beaten (sorry, not a fan), but also it kinda makes Nadal's run to the semis ridiculously easy
Dinky Jo - January 18, 2008 12:25 PM (GMT)
Roddick takes the second set 6-3......
Dinky Jo - January 18, 2008 12:30 PM (GMT)
Just reading the BBC live commentary and it says that Mardy Fish is getting married this year......oh the joy, someone is going to become Mrs Fish :giggle:
Wise_Analyst - January 18, 2008 12:41 PM (GMT)
Glad to see Kohlschreiber doing himself justice here. Once they get into rallies, the German should have the advantage - his backhand is infinitely superior to Roddick's and his forehand is probably on a par, if not quite as potent in a hitting winners sense. I thought he'd flop here and Roddick would serve his way to an easy victory, but as it is, it's anyone's guess. (Although I'm still gonna go for a 4 or 5 set Roddick win).

Absolutely. Can't understand people insisting Nadal's draw is a dead cert - if PHM plays his best tennis, he'll probably win that match - unlikely, I imagine a set and a half of brilliance before a fold, but there are a lot of players who can beat him on this surface.
All parts of the draw look ridiculously simple compared to the Nalbandian-Djokovic-Baghdatis-Hewitt-Ferrer section anyway.

Mr Cabbage Writer :D has a chance against Roddick. Unless of course Roddick serves him off court but he doesn't seem to be doing that. I don't think Roddick's forehand si the weapon ti once was and Cabbage is coping well with it. And seems to have doen a few nice backhands.
*wonders why predicted 3-0 Roddick *
Wise_Analyst - January 18, 2008 01:01 PM (GMT)
Kohlschreiber within a hair's breadth of going up 0-30 on the Roddick serve with a backhand down the line which narrowly missed. He then played a poor drop shot when he should have won the rally and then two booming serves from Roddick take us to 5-5.
Kohl's been the more threatening on return games so far, so it goes without saying that Roddick will probably take this in the tiebreak.

I woudln't cos my name is even worse. Obviously I cannot give it away and it's not that common here so folks seem to pick up on it more. And despite being simple enough they spell it wrong every f*cking time, it is so annoying as I always spell it to people and use the phonetic alphabet as well. Soem idiots think my middel name is my surname too. My partner has trouble as he has I think a Dutch spelling of an English name. We have much amusement when we look at the addressees on our mail. It's amazing how wrong they can be
Btw even my partner's employer co she was taken over by BT last year had his name spelt wrong! They now have him down as a MIss too He told his boss he was a Ms if you don't mind

Well I actually did nto underate Kohly when I put 3-0. I thought he'd hold his own but i expected to see close sets and at least a tiebreak which I expected A-Rod to come through, and for A-Rod to make late breaks for 6-4 or 7-5. I wish I'd gone for the 3-1 though as I originally thought.

This is exactly my point - maybe also that I don't really rate PHM. Fair point on Kolschreiber, Tenez - I didn't see that coming.
PHM has decent groundstrokes, reasonable FH - but he self-destructs too easily. I don't think he has what it takes to trouble anyone seriously.

Yeah good on Kohly as he is now known. :ok: He's making it quite a contest, makes a change to have that in the few matches I get to see on the BBC. And after Mo Mo this morning :( Terrible.
Wise_Analyst - January 18, 2008 01:07 PM (GMT)
Kohlschreiber goes down 15-40 on serve with some utterly amateurish unforced errors. He partially redeems himself by winning a great rally at 30-40, then Roddick hits the top of the net going for a backhand winner down the line. A good serve gives him advantage and an ace takes us to 6-5.
Kudos to Kohlshreiber there, it looked like he'd folded like a paper aeroplane but he did really well to come back. That might give him the edge.

And yep - that part of the draw was the toughest to predict. We had Safin in the mix too.
