Dinky Jo - January 17, 2008 12:30 AM (GMT)
Just looked at the scores and noticed that Kuznetsova is a break down to Pironkova in the first set :o

Flame - January 17, 2008 12:32 AM (GMT)
this was my mad upset pick. come on piron!

Dinky Jo - January 17, 2008 12:40 AM (GMT)
hmm...and Kuzzy gets it back on serve.....

is venus having a few problems against Pin? They seem to be exchanging breaks of serve.....in fact Pin has 3 BPs now

Flame - January 17, 2008 12:44 AM (GMT)
kuzzy down a break again.

Dinky Jo - January 17, 2008 12:45 AM (GMT)
and venus has broken Pin back again

Flame - January 17, 2008 12:50 AM (GMT)
pin head aain't beating venus, no way.

Dinky Jo - January 17, 2008 12:55 AM (GMT)
there have now been 8 (I think) breaks of serve in the venus vs. pin match - and it's back on serve

Kuzzy looking like she might in trouble against Pironkova though

Flame - January 17, 2008 01:02 AM (GMT)
kuzzy hangs tough and breaks back serving to stay in the set now.

Dinky Jo - January 17, 2008 01:07 AM (GMT)
venus takes the first set 7-5

60% first serve for venus as opposed to 81% from Pin

Flame - January 17, 2008 01:11 AM (GMT)
kuzzy serving for the set now. looks to have tamed pironkova.

Flame - January 17, 2008 01:13 AM (GMT)
what the hell is wrong with venus? down a break in the 2nd now.

Flame - January 17, 2008 01:19 AM (GMT)
6-0 i'm guessing kuzzy will win the tb.

Dinky Jo - January 17, 2008 01:19 AM (GMT)
Kirilenko has just put out morigami 6-1 6-1

Dinky Jo - January 17, 2008 01:20 AM (GMT)
tie-break to Kuzzy and Venus gets broken yet again......

Dinky Jo - January 17, 2008 01:25 AM (GMT)
Pin actually manages to consolidate a break :o

and Pironkova goes a break up on Kuzzy at the start of the second set..... :o :o

Dinky Jo - January 17, 2008 08:08 AM (GMT)
After all the early excitement Kuzzy wins 7-6(0), 6-2 and Williams wins 7-5, 6-4, although i don't think the scoreline actually shows how tough those matches were.

The first set of Kuzzy's match lasted over an hour, and both of venus's sets were 45 mins. and 14 breaks of serve in the Venus match

jack.hl.ng - January 17, 2008 10:18 AM (GMT)

Venus had to really grind it out today, what a relief :phew:

Pin was just running everything down, and she's such a methodical, calculating player too. Hitting the ball with such variations in height and width. Venus's serve was a bit ragged, and wasnt always flowing off the ground, but when she was good, she was superb, especially in the latter stages of the second set.

So pleased she's through :D :yahoo:

Looking forward to her match against Mirza.

chokapova - January 17, 2008 06:17 PM (GMT)
well no big shocks today.
I don't know why everyone gets their knickers in a twist when players go breaks down.
It's the early rounds folks, it's just all about getting through this week.
We can't expect the big guns to play well every match... :)

True but it does sound it wasn't just Pin's game that was the problem here...
