Title: Day 3 at the AO

Dinky Jo - January 16, 2008 07:48 AM (GMT)
Well, the women's side has the most eagerly anticipated match so far......Sharapova vs. Davenport

Just a few results so far:

Winning in straight sets we have Henin, Serena, Jankovic, Mauresmo, Vaidisova, Schiavone, Sugiyama, and Vesnina

Biggest surprise so far has to be Schynder out at the hands of the Australian Dellacqua

and Golovin is also out, losing in 3 sets to Rezai.

vivahate - January 16, 2008 08:41 AM (GMT)
Bammer's in trouble as well, down 2-6 0-4

Dinky Jo - January 16, 2008 08:45 AM (GMT)
davenport vs. sharapova is about to start!!!

it's not often that i pay any attention to women's matches, but i truly truly would like davenport to win this one!!!!

WAKE UP LINDSAY FOR CHRISTS SAKE

vivahate - January 16, 2008 09:02 AM (GMT)
go Maria, up 4-0 :) :)

i was going to go to bed, but now i might watch a bit of this...

Manzikert - January 16, 2008 09:03 AM (GMT)
It's what I feared. Davenport didn't step onto the court with a shred of belief. Sharapova actually was clearly nervous to start and her serving was shaky, but Davenport (ordinarily one of the best returners around) did nothing at all to capitalise. Before you know it, Sharapova is up 5-0.

The second set might be competitive, but who knows. On the bright side we'll get a rematch of the Madrid final.

Go Masha!

I'd like to see Lynds get some game here though :( :(

Dinky Jo - January 16, 2008 09:08 AM (GMT)
 not the score i wanted to see.....come on Lindsay!!!!

Manzikert - January 16, 2008 09:12 AM (GMT)
Nice save at 30 points from the dreaded bagel for Davenport. She seems to be feeling the ball a bit better now. Trouble as Sharapova tries to serve it out and she is facing 30-all herself....

Manzikert - January 16, 2008 09:13 AM (GMT)
No dice. A tremendous cross-court backhand from Sharapova seals the set in her favour 6-1. Can Davenport stage a fightback?

vivahate - January 16, 2008 09:14 AM (GMT)
well done Maria :)

Dark_Necrofear™ - January 16, 2008 09:16 AM (GMT)
Quick Update.Maria seems to be finding better angles and as was in the past with Lindsay, her mobility is letting her down.Sharapova has that extra bite in terms of power and is finding some amazing angles.Lindsay also seems to be a bit nervous which is understandable.

Lets go set number 2....Come On Lindsay!

vivahate - January 16, 2008 09:18 AM (GMT)
one would expect Linds to get it together a little more in this second set.

trisco - January 16, 2008 09:23 AM (GMT)
First set from Sharapova looked fantastic.. like where she left off at the YEC's last year..

Manzikert - January 16, 2008 09:46 AM (GMT)
Davenport did well to stay with Sharapova to 3-all, and impressively clawed out from 0-40 only to face another break point, when the Russian somehow teed off on a first serve for a clean return winner to go up 4-3.

It probably won't be long now. Sharapova has just been too solid in every department whilst Davenport never got her teeth into the match.

Gav - January 16, 2008 09:55 AM (GMT)
6-1 6-3 Go Shazza :yahoo: :yahoo:   !!!

Unlucky that Lyndsay and her had to meet at this stage of the tourney.

Dark_Necrofear™ - January 16, 2008 10:03 AM (GMT)
Well there were glimpses of old Lindsay in the second set but not enough unfortunetly. It boils down to preparation and Lindsay has played well to win 3 small arse tournies with facing no big names. As the commentator said,in the slams the level of competetion just goes up a notch and it was that notch that did Davenport in,particular a notch that represented Maria Sharapova.Lindsay, with time will improve and she will be challenging Maria without a doubt.I mean if Powder Puff Hingis can beat her then surely Lindsay is in with a shot.Im going to be following her year very carefully! :ok:

trisco - January 16, 2008 10:04 AM (GMT)
Well done Maria.. I was expecting a bit more of a tight scoreline than that! :o Maria looked on form there and I hope she can continue it into the latter stages of the tourney.
I hope this result doesn't have an effect on Lindsay where she starts to think she cannot live with the top girls anymore.
For some reason in melbourne her play doesn't seem to have been to the standard it has since her return looking at the scorelines.

jack.hl.ng - January 16, 2008 12:39 PM (GMT)
wow, Sharapova back to great form. I watched the match, and looks like her shoulder injury is behind her, and she is serving back to maybe 70-80% of what it was.
I thought the score line would of been closer, but Sharapova really stepped up. Could give Henin some trouble in the semi's.

Must say Vaidisova playing well again, be good to see her back into the Top 10 again, though alot of ranking points to defend (SF appearance last year)

Serena playing better, she seemed a bit rusty in her first round match. Azarenka should be a good test for her.

Good AO so far! :P

SuperBRAT - January 16, 2008 01:22 PM (GMT)
Well what a dissappointing match! Another one that was bigged up and failed to live up to expectation. Lindsey had no oomph and lacked intensity. I had hoped she'd do better than that.

Its a shame :( i hope Linds doesnt let this put her off entering the big tournies. Despite her performance i bet she would have beat most of the tour today, barring the Williams and Henin and maybe Kuzzy.

The good thing about the match was Sharapovas performance. Shes not my fave player but its great to see her back to her best and the more people in the mix for the title the better as far as im concerned :)

dl04 - January 16, 2008 04:43 PM (GMT)
Lindsay was so flat today, such a shame :( I still think she's having to adapt to playing the Slams again, because she looked so tetchy and nervous, especially in the first set. Serve was off dramatically, couldnt find crucial first serves on big points and put on the back foot all the time. No real authority on her grounstrokes too, mostly just pushing the ball back down the middle and letting Sharapova dictate off the ground. Movement looked so below par today, looked like she could be outfoxed by any type of ball :(

Sharapova played well, but i've seen her play better and she didnt have to do that much, but she did a good job of keeping up the pressure and served better than she has for some time.

Hope Lindsay keeps progressing now after this, because she could still be a real threat at Wimbledon and the US Open for sure. When her ranking moves up and she gets more big match experience, i think she'll be fine :D

chokapova - January 16, 2008 06:49 PM (GMT)
Very disappointing for Lindsay. :(
Really thought this would be a close one...
