Description: share your favourite moments here
SuperBRAT - July 10, 2006 06:22 PM (GMT)
Well obviously Amelie fianlyl overcoming her demons and realising he rful potential, lovely to see. :D And beatign Sharapova showing class and variety can overcome power.
I enjoyed Bjorkman's run to the quarters, and loved his emotional win over Stepanek. He is one classy player and remarkabel at 34 years old. :ok:
Murray had a great run, roddick victory was a major highlight fo rme. Promising for the future now he has a coach has every chance of doign well. :ok:
Loved Baghi, his on court personailty was great and he seems such a warm person. Great tennis from him too. :ok: Soem great points in the Nadal match.
Enjoyed watching Djokovic, Wawrinka playign Ancic - hot stuff indeed.
Love the Beast aka Mrnyi. Great run form him and enjoyed watchign his doubles.
Vera Zvonereva and Andy Ram in the mixed doubels final with Venus and Bryan - Vera was awesome :ok: :ok: :ok:
Agassi's sentimental departure - will miss you Andre, :( what a smashing bloke. :ok:
And of course watching the master at work getting his fourth Wimby - great stuff Roger :ok:
Many others, over to you ........
SuperBRAT - July 10, 2006 08:11 PM (GMT)
C'mon Dav, don't be shy! ;) Surely you must have enjoyed Stepanek v Bjorkman, a grass court classic? :D
JymJilly - July 10, 2006 11:30 PM (GMT)
Bjorkman reaching the semi final and watching his 1/4 final match. And Tim Henman winning his 1st round match. I watched it on Henman Hill drinking a jug of Pimms and eating sushi and strawberries.
And of course Andy Murray beating Roddick just after England had lost in the World Cup. It was a masterful performance.
styeffo - July 11, 2006 08:16 AM (GMT)
"eating sushi and strawberries."
Not in a sandwich i hope :D

No stef!!!. Hey what about Nadals 5 set encounter with Kendrick that was good. Mrs. Murray said they need a burger bar at wimbledon. Well they have one and fish and chips too. Its true
Big Al - July 11, 2006 08:57 AM (GMT)
There were so many highlights, one of the best Wimbledons for years.

Kendrick vs. Nadal was probably the most exciting match of the tournament for me, a lot of quality tennis and drama throughout!

Well accordig to some it was a waste of time and a non-event! What were they doing when the tennis was on then? roflmao
I think people are often dissappointed because they build up to much expectation for the final stages. You get the most out of a tournie watching the earlier rounds and the big match ups where the draw has been unkind I'd say. And being open minded and watching a variety of matches rather than your favourite player. There was PLENTY of great stuff, but I do feel that the BBC coverage failed to maximise this. And to a degree the men's draw meant that there was potential for many weaker matches and surprise quarter finalists with so many great grass courters going out early due to Federer's draw. Thing is though there are ALWAYS years when people say it was boring, and I would say this one was less boring than many I rememeber, men's and womens. At least the women had a NEW champion, and they needed that :ok:

Yes it was dramatic, how the hell Nadal scrape through that one? :o Well all credit to him fo rthat, but I was dissappointed for Kendrick. I mean how low is he ranked compared to the World No 2? And he played a great game. I wonder if we will see Kendrick next year? I'd like to, great serve. Unlucky he went out when he put in such a great perfromance compared to the other American men, cruel draw for him I guess because I reckon had he not met Nadal there he'd have had a good chance to go further.
Hewitt v Hyung Yaik Lee was similar in drama and quality - di dyou see that?

Yes that was probably my fave match too. And Tim's first set against a certain chappie ;)
Best moment for me, was sitting on centre court on a sunny afternoon. :D Drinking Vouvray out of a plastic cup with a motif of tigger and pooh bear on (my firends little boys mug, borrowed from homeI) and chomping on a slice of Cheese onion and chive quiche  :D

Yes I did, Lee was outstanding I thought, and extremely unlucky not to take Hewitt out!
I forgot about that, those two matches were the best on the mens side for me, although I loved the serve-volley battle between Radek and Jonas of course... :D

I was there for that match!!!
petalp - July 12, 2006 05:46 PM (GMT)
Highlights included..
Amelie's celebration upon winning SW19.. And her leaps of joy when winning in the Semi Too!
Fed's crowd all holding hands when he was on match point..
Paola Suarez's scream in the final of the women's doubles! Now THAT is how to let it all out!! roflmao
Vera Zvonareva's scintillating performance in the mixed doubles final (and Andy Ram was a bit of a star too..)
Johnny Vegas talking about Wimbledon, and his aborted tennis career (he regretted pursing his career on the clay courts in Preston rather than on grass) roflmao
Mario Ancic and Novak Djokovic in a pulsating 5 set match (though the beeb commentator's comment about the rumblings between the 2 balkan players was a low point.. :yikes: )
Would have been more pulsating matches as high points e.g. Blake v Mirnyi had I been able to see them!!
The low-5 between Fed and Nadal when they were parading their trophies.
Fed's backhand cross court (clipping the net) at the end of the first set in the final.
The celebrations of Baggy's young niece(?) when he was playing. And of course the arrival of Baggy at SW19!
Andre's happiness at making the sort of final bow at SW19 that he wanted.. And Steffi being there too.
Fed's jacket..very dapper :)
Rafa chewing the fat with MacEnroe (and a much quieter Stich) on Today at Wimbers (after the semis) made for great TV.. e.g. Mac wanting to know how Rafa controls himself if he gets a bad call? Rafa: 'I know that the decision's not going to change as it's not clay' roflmao
Oh and of course in results terms, having 2 of my favourite players as Wimbledon champs :yahoo:
SuperBRAT - July 12, 2006 06:59 PM (GMT)
Hey petalp,
yes I forgot Johnny Vegas - OMG was he loud! he cracks me up, especially when he was saying that the racquets nowadays were so huge he could tap eit to his chest and just stand on court and let winners bounce of it! roflmao
And yes I liked Fed's jacket. And higlight fo rm ewas that everyone stuck to white, unlike some years when they have flouted the rules. It is so much easier to watch. I hated some of the busy outfits at the FO, I mean pink doe sNOT look nice on an orange clay backgroudn does it? And Fed go tthe tradtional look very right. :ok:

Hey SB! :D
Yes, I remember him talking about racquet sizes! roflmao
Guardian-style correction here.. he talked about Clay Courts in St. Helens (may have referred to them as 'car parks', grit kept getting in his eyes, and no mates, so hit against a wall).
Absolutely agreed re: Fed looking fabulous in the whites. He just looks the part, and may that breast pocket crest continue to increase in size! :ok: Apparently he's already donated the 2006 version of his jacket to the Wimbledon museum..
Yes, it was good to see that everyone did adhere at SW19, and certainly some of the outfits that people wore at RG were far too busy! And whilst I love terra cotta as a colour it categorically does not go with everything!
I find it especially odd in doubles matches, where everyone is wearing different coloured outfits. I think that I'm just always been used to teams being in a team kit, like doubles matches in the Olympics (both tennis and badminton)
Oh, maybe I'm up for a nit-picker's award here, but on the subject ot SW19 whites, noticed that all 4 men's semi finalists were white headband wearers. I much prefer headbands, have a mild dislike of caps, which increases tenfold when it is worn back to front (Gasquet? Grosjean? Why? You are French! You usually have style, surely?!)..
Hmm.. maybe I should get out more..

Yes I love headbands, but they do not suit everyone. I don't mind caps, I think Courier looked great in his, but I think he wore it the right way round! Not bothered if they wear them back to front, but some do look like Kevin the Teenager off Harry Enfield if they are not careful. Somehow Grosjean gets away with it though! :D
I agree when it is doubles there is too much going on with four multi-coloured outfits. And yes, terracotta is tricky. I can tell you it looks great with greens though in the right tone (I once decorated a room in terracotta and earthy greens and browns and it looked good) or you can wear a single shad eof blue on it but NOT pink, red, yellow or mixtures of the lot. It's a deep tone so they need to matc ti with a similar one - sorry to go on but I am traine din interior design so I knwo all about tones! roflmao sharapova's dolly mixture colours were vile on their own - who woudl put yellow next to pink? :o and with blue too - let alone on terracotta! roflmao The USO was a problem with soemof tem last year as there was a lot of blue on blue! Far to mch on the eye. :D
Yes I remeber that Johnny Vegas thing - it cracked me up! I'm sure he was drunk (he usually is!) and I think the commentary team go tmore than they bargained for - he was shouting his head off and everyone was staring up! I am nto too keen on most of these new loud commedians, but he just cracks me up cos I relate to his humour - it's very Northern and i am from the Midlands so I get it! Perhsp next year tey can pu thim in the commentary team - now that woudl eb a hoot! roflmao
Fed's jacket int he museum all ready then? If he keeps winnign ad they make more there will eb a whole wardrobe of them! Are theyplannign another do you know? I think they should. I wonder what it is worth? Loads proabably, but even more because of it's historic importance. I can imagine that going for half a million plus n one of these charity auctions.
Pebs - July 15, 2006 02:07 PM (GMT)
Amelie dancing round the court on her fantabulous win - brought a tear to the eye.
Agassi and the standing ovation he got after his last match - brought a tear to the eye.
Tims match against Fed brought more pain than anything else - and therefore, a tear to the eye.
Murrays emphatic win over Roddick (told you Ark!) - brought tears of joy....
Yes, I blubbed my way through Wimbers this year :D
Oh, and I loved watching the Fed - Nadal final - brought a tingle or two ;)

Glad someone has a highlight Pebs, as the general feeling on here (among tennis fans of all people  ) seems to be that it was a "non event"! Well if you can't find a highlight in THE biggest and most prestigious tennnis tournie in the world, something is wrong methinks. Maybe they prefer clay?! roflmao roflmao roflmao

I guess I found it a highlight cause I got to see some of it! Grass is my favourite and I caught some good matches.

Yes I think the fact that we get to see the lot, for a whole two weeks and it beign on home soil makes you feel more a part of it than any other slam. We do get more FO and AO now thanks to the BBc digital service, but it is not the same - not everyone watches and no one talks about it much do they? Plus I love grass so it's the best for me. I was slightly dissappinted with it but nto terribly so, and i pu that down to too much tennis in a short space of time, as in two weeks of FO, one week of Stella, Eastbourne then two more weeks of Wimbers and all in about 6 weeks. Which the scedules woudl change to pace it out a bit better.

Oh, I'm glad that Pebs and Al enjoyed SW19 too!! Well, that now makes four of us.. kind of like 3 musketeers, and then 4 in the sequel.. Or maybe i've caught too much sun today..;)
SB, agreed with your thoughts re: Terra Cotta (sorry, i'm a bit late in picking up this thread again..) Wow, you trained in interior design?? That would be a fabulous thing to study. My Mum did her degree in Art, so I've picked up a lot from her, and have a few books on this. Maybe it's mainstream, but I've generally liked the Tricia Guild stuff..
And you're right about the bad colour schemes during the FO, esp Sharapova. The baby-doll stuff.. there is something quite unsettling about it in general. Good to have wimbers restoring some aesthetic order, as it were.
The blue of the US Open is quite problematic, and definitely difficult to match. re: blue on blue.. Federer is inclined to wear his blue 'Nike Federer' top, and becomes a bit camouflaged of course..! So maybe that's his secret to success there..:D
I'm generally not keen on the louder comedians either, but Jonny Vegas does it with such charm that I can't help but like him. Imagine him in the commentary team with Mac and Boris!! roflmao
Ooh.. I grew up in the Midlands too! :) I find that there are aspects of it that 'look north' as it were (friendly and down-to-earth), and aspects that are more like the south (e.g. the new Bull Ring).
Oh, re: Fed's jacket.. They are definitely doing another!! It's proven to be a big hit. I think that it was after the Hanuch match that Fed put his jacket on and there were lots of wolf whistles. He looked a little embarrassed and waved to the crowd as if to say: 'Aw, shucks!'..
