Title: The Young Guns
Dinky Jo - January 10, 2008 10:57 AM (GMT)
Out of all of the 'young guns' who do you think will go furthest at the AO? Are there any other youngsters who you feel might make an impact?
and yes, I know I've missed Nadal off the list even though he's still a youngster - but to me I think he seems a slightly different generation to all of the others on the list, after all, he's actually won a slam! :P

I agree with the reasons for Nadal not being on the list (although I don't think I'd vote for him anyway), but Youzhny? I know you like your Russian players, but he's 25! :P
I went for Murray - not an attempt to hype him up, as I don't think he's got anything like the game required to win a Slam. However, he is very adept at seeing off the majority of players below him, and he deals with the much-lesser ranked players very easily. There are still question marks about his durability, but with a nice draw he could well reach the semi-finals.
Djokovic sadly has been in pretty naff form since his US Open final debacle, and I'm not sure he'll automatically regain his form for a Slam. Gasquet is being discussed on the other thread and although I'll always support him, I do think 2008 is gonna be exactly the same as 2007 - not enough belief and too much mental fragility. If he defends his 4th round points from last year I'd be pleasantly surprised.

Looking through British supporters eyes and for the fact that Djoko looked decidely pants late on last year, I'm jumping on the Murray bandwagon..... Haggis all around. :ok:

I would still exercise a degree of immense caution with Murray - he's yet to get to the latter stages of any Slam, and though he proves his worth in smaller tournaments, I've yet to see him really impress. He's got a decent game, and as I said on the other thread, if he makes it past the 4th round that will be a good result for him - and he'll undoubtedly build on it. He's not Slam material yet, and this year will be all about showing whether he ever will be. I suggest he steers clear of poultry based products and stops excuse mongering for a start :D
I voted for Djokovic, ok, he slumped after the USO and we heard it all from blisters on little toes, to headaches, to fatigue etc etc...but if you showed me those players abilities on paper, I'd pick Djoko every time. If he can pick himself back up and show some of that quite brilliant hard court flair he'll be back to proving himself a serious and worthy contender.
I've been somewhat more impressed with Wawrinka - but not for a Slam
As for Gasquet - I said it all on the other thread. The upshot being:

I really think some are reading too much on Djoko's Masters performance. He clearly wasn't motivated and felt he was on Holidays already. In Madrid, he gave Nalby the toughest fight out of the top 3 and I can't see why he woudl not have improved since as he is also one of the youngest.
I confidently voted for him needless to say. ;)

on the basis that I'm 25, i'm gonna insist that he can be counted as young! :P
And I still see Youhzny as up-and-coming rather than an established player, which is why I included him on the list

Agree - somewhat disappointing attitude, but I think he'll be ready for it again this season. Write of the Serbinator at your peril! :D

I went for Djoko. He did have a disappointing end to last season, but I reckon he'll be fired up to do well here. There's the possibility that he will be able to start putting a dent in to Rafa's lead for the number 2 spot, and increase his lead over those further down the race. Plus, there's no chance that he will meet Federer in the 4th round this time

So tough to call, as some are unkown quantities any many inconsistent, like Gasquet and Baghi who are two of my faves. I think Youzhny has a great cahnce although he si nto a young gun as such. And Murray so long as he stays injury free and doesn't draw Fed.
liam_valid - January 10, 2008 10:01 PM (GMT)
I think this is a great chance for Murray to beat Djoko should they meet and he has a great draw. If he gets Nadal or Fed though hes probably mincemeat

Agree but if Nadal is wprn out by then as he often is these days cos he can't close matches out quick, then I;d put money on Murray to beat Nadal.
vivahate - January 10, 2008 11:16 PM (GMT)
clearly djokovic is the pick of this lot. noone else have proven themselves capable at this level.
MrInvisible - January 14, 2008 11:09 AM (GMT)
Well, Murray out now. Tsonga probably to win a couple more rounds, but then he'd play Gasquet, who dealt with him comfortably at Wimbledon last year.
Baghdatis is in an interesting section of draw, but he has to beat T Johnasson first.
Harry Potter - January 14, 2008 08:10 PM (GMT)
I voted Tsonga even before the draw was done  Shame for Murray really, I fervently wanted him to go to the final :(

Well well well well looks like that my decision to vote for Tsonga was even better than I initially thought B)

Well actually I didn't really read that list thoroughly - it was only after voting Tsonga that I realized that it also included Gasquet, Murray and Djoko, as I expected this thread to be about unseeded youngsters
Ever since last year's Queen's Tsonga has been obsessing me, funnily enough. I even mentioned him recently in a school report  My classmates were telling me that it was stupid of me to pick Tsonga as an example for being one of the most promising youngsters - how wrong they were, and shame on them, dissing their own fellow-countryman!
Nothing's done though, no matter how slim the chances out, we can't *really* rule Djoko out for the title yet... :hmm:
