Title: Wimbledon 2006 Women's Singles: Review

LDF - July 9, 2006 04:56 PM (GMT)
So, Wimbledon has finished for another year - what did you all think of the women's tournament?

Overall, I felt it was quite disappointing. Many of the early matches were blowouts (though to be fair the women's event doesn't normally come alive until the second week). The standard of tennis was not as high as last year, and some big names severely disappointed. Clijsters was uninspiring throughout the tournament (much like at Roland Garros), and Kuznetsova and Hingis dropped out early with disappointing performances. It was a shame to see Venus fall in the 3rd round too, but Jankovic was excellent and remained calm in the latter stages.

The quarter-finals were quite poor. Sharapova v Dementieva was just dismal; Elena's serve hinders her too much on grass. Henin-Hardenne v Bremond was ok - Bremond's lovely style of play enabled her to make such a run this year. Myskina lost all her form against Amelie. The standout was Clijsters v Li; alright, it wasn't the highest quality, but Kim had to work hard against her gutsy opponent. Li's run to the quarter-finals was one of the best stories of Wimbledon 2006. I do think the semi-finals could've been better, but they were certainly entertaining. Amelie held her nerve against an erratic Maria, and Justine scraped past Kim (who in fact blew many chances to gain the advantage).

However, the lingering memory from this year will be the joy and elation of Amelie Mauresmo in winning her first Wimbledon. She silenced her critics were a gritty three set win against Justine, one of the best fighters in the game. I'm so happy for her; she's a lovely person, and battled through a tough draw. And wasn't it great to see two players with such shot-making in the final?

LDF, I haven't managed to watch all of the women's matches yet! Recorded many of them whilst at work and will work through them now that the blanket coverage has ended..

Yes, I thought that the women's draw was more or less predictable really. Didn't have to put too much money on, say who would win between JHH and Clijsters.

Of the less predicatble elements, I was disappointed to see Martis Hingis get knocked out so early, though credit to Sugiyama.

I had thought that Venus would be a real contender, and was surprised that Jankovic won, much as I'm a fan of hers!

I didn't catch all of the quarter finals, but certainly the Myskina Mauresmo match was one that I thought would be good, but was a little disappointing. I am hoping that Myskina takes her form from SW19 and Eastbourne into the hardcourt season.

Ckijsters and Sharapova probably did no more and no better than expected. Thought that they just steamrolled lesser opponents and came up short when the going got tougher.

I have to agree that the major high was Amelie winning the final. Wonderful, wonderful moment when she won that final point!! It will certainly be the defining moment for me on the women's side :)

I'm hoping that the younger players will come of age next year and give the draw a more competitive edge. I'm thinking of Vaidisova, maybe Ivanovic, hopefully Jankovic, and maybe Radwanska too? Maybe Golovin, Safina, Peer too? Would love for Zvonereva to play anything like she did in the mixed doubles too :)

Oh god Elena vs Sharapova was dire, dire, dire............one match i shant recall in a hurry roflmao

Low moment for me was Venus's demise, she looked so dissapointed :( She just made too many unforced errors though and allowed Jankovic into the match much more than she should've been allowed to. I was devastated that day

Highlight though for me was the womens doubles result and also the crowning of queen amelie at wimbledon! not the highest quality match you ever did see, but dramatic and a day of deliverance for Amelie :D
