Well done Amelie!

I'm so happy for her - and it was a nice touch with her joking about her nerves

Amelie's serve out wide on the deuce court was brilliant. She took advantage of this to serve two aces in the final game, and then mixed it up by going down the T every now and then. Although her first serve percentage fell in the 2nd set, she continued to attack the net (I'm surprised the statistics were so poor) and display her remarkable athleticism. Amelie's had a very tough draw this year, and she fully deserves this title. I was nervous for her at the end, but I'm glad Justine made her serve it out; and Amelie delivered.

Justine played very well in the opening set, capitalising on Amelie's subdued start. However, her forehand gradually disintegrated, and her first serve percentage slowly fell. But her level of play did rise again in the final set; unfortunately for her, too many errors gave the break away at the beginning of the set, and she couldn't get back with Amelie's excellent serving. She's had a great tournament, and she'll certainly be challenging for a career Grand Slam next year too.

Overall, I enjoyed that final. Sure, the first two sets only had one of them playing great, but the third set was so tense, and that created a wonderful atmosphere. Watching the two women show off their variety of shots was captivating, especially the net exchanges. Both women moved also moved well. Amelie managed to tough it out, and she should be given full credit for that. And wasn't it nice to see her experience the moment of joy and relief after match point?

Congratulations Amelie! :yahoo:

And Justine was very gracious in defeat; I know she was upset, so I have to commend her for that :ok:

I was rooting for her, and loved the cool way she served it out. Fantastique.
Great to see the emotion at the end although I felt a little sorry for JHH.
Lets hope for a five set classic tomorrow(Federer winnning of course ) ;)

Amelie you legend!!!! :yahoo: :yahoo:

She really stepped it up didnt she, banishing all the past Wimbledon demons with a stunning display in the end over Justine. For the first time really, mauresmo just really competed, i mean really dug in and it was almost like she was saying ' I am not going to lose ' and in the end that proved the difference over Justine.

I thought both girls played at a very high level today, so nice to see such aggressive tennis being played at the net, and such artistic stroke making, particulary off mauresmo and justine's backhands. Some truly exceptional rallies, and some of mauresmo's volleys absolutely superb. They're just so instinctive and technically sound, there is little to break down with those volleys and she really trusted that part of her game today.

I thought Justine opened the door for mauresmo to gain momentum in the match by some real sloppy errors in the second. Just seemed to be over-hitting a touch, particulary on the forehand( which i still feel can break down), and some of her backhand smashes :yikes: Still as justine said, i think mauresmo just played better on the key points and served better as the match progressed i feel. I still think justine will win wimbledon one day, but today was Amelie's day :D

So Allez Amelie you star

Absolutely!

Wrote a fair bit about this on the beeb site, much of which was there or threabouts with ldf and dl04.

Rather than regurgitate it, link as follows:

The OP is the same as the one on Centre Court, but there are some more thoughts on the match further down in the thread.

Looks like the thread was featured on the main Tennis page, which was nice! :D And for once was relatively (ie not entirely!) troll-free ;)
