Title: Since when do you follow tennis?

Hiromiku - July 8, 2006 02:36 PM (GMT)
I started watching it when i was like 9, but at the time, I was more into footie, and I usually only watched the AO, Wimby, RG, and some of the Davis cup, and didn't care about the rest.

I only really started to follow since last summer

safc_fan89 - July 9, 2006 09:35 AM (GMT)
I only follow the grand slams.

Big Al - July 9, 2006 11:32 AM (GMT)
I started watching Wimbledon in (reaches for walking stick :yikes: ) 1979

I expect your mother plonked you in front of the TV to watch the ball going backwards and forwards. You'll have been about 1˝, so you can't be more than 28 now, Big Al :P

Now MY first Wimbledon goes so far back that I can't remember when it was (moves wheel chair).

SuperBRAT - July 9, 2006 05:27 PM (GMT)
I have watched since about 1976 I think. As a kid I recall the Mac and Borg final and after that I was hooked . Then in 1977 Wade won for Brtain in the Jubilee year. It was so fitting, all the street parties and the bonus of actually seeing a Brit win a slam live, and it has nto bene doen since (in singles).

Thign is back then everyone watched the big matches at wimbers, we had a TV at shcool for the Wade v Stove match. It was the Golden Era and this made it mor epopular due to the personailties. It's too serious now, I doubt we will ever get that back.

welshboy91 - July 9, 2006 07:17 PM (GMT)

Scotsguy - July 9, 2006 07:32 PM (GMT)

Hiromiku - July 9, 2006 09:04 PM (GMT)

I first started watching during Wimbledon 2004 when i was on study leave from school / doing GCSE's.

Big Al - July 10, 2006 10:25 AM (GMT)
I became anavid fan after watching Borg-Connors in hte Wimby semifinal.
Borg brought a lot of people to the game . He just had an almost superhuman aura about him .

Yes that was a classic. I am huge fan of Borg and Jimmy too. Isn't it great to see Jimmy and Mac at Wimbers? If only Borg would come. I hope Agassi does soem work for the BBc, he'd be a great asset. :D

Yes Borg had an aura that has onyl really been replicated by Federer IMO. He was so cool, do you recall when they calle dhim the IceBorg? roflmao

Big Al - July 10, 2006 08:10 PM (GMT)
yeah when he finally lost to mcenroe the papers said 'Iceborg melts at last'

Since 1969 when Anne Jones won Wimbledon. The Open era had started the year before that. Since then watched Wimbledon every year. Then with the advent of modern technology have followed all the mens tournaments throughout the course of the year. Go to Wimbledon most years and as many Davis cup ties as possible

Well you have followed it a long time then. I do recall tennis being on in the late 60s and early 70s but I was only 3 in 1969 so I did nto apprecaite the matches. But I do recall Anne Jones, and I recall my mum beign a huge fan of Billie Jean King and she won wimbers about 1970 didn't she?

Yes times ahev changed I think. The whole family woudl watch wimbledon back in the 1970s for the characters. Everyone's mum loved Borg didn't they and hated Mac! My mum used to say he was a foul mouthed disgrace, but my dad liked him so I guess I became a fan as a rebel really! :D When you look back though at the old clips, arent; Borg's shorts SHORT? roflmao No wonder the mums loved him. :D

Mkkreuk - July 12, 2006 10:50 AM (GMT)
Only properly since just before last wimbledon, before then i was only a casual follower....even now its 3rd on my fave sports list

dl04 - July 12, 2006 12:00 PM (GMT)
I started to become an avid fan in 1998, when wimbledon was on. It was the year of ' the Venus tantrum ' where she was absolutely irate roflmao She ended up losing to Jana Novotna, who really appealed to me with her emotional triumph in the singles.

wasn't she wonderful in that final?

I started following the circuit in about 1995, after watching Sampras beat becker in the wimby final.

I've followed it pretty closely since the turn of the millenium mind though! :D
