Title: Reults Group 1 Week 1
liam_valid - December 4, 2007 04:56 PM (GMT)
Ok then first through with an absolutely amazing performance that would have Leona Lewis quaking in her boots, yes folks it was worth the wait, its my protige SB, with Son of a preacher man
liam_valid - December 4, 2007 05:08 PM (GMT)
Next through is Lex with Robbie Williams Let me entertain you. I shouldnt criticise really because every pales in comparrison to SB this week but Lex, that was crap :bs: That was enough to send poor Robbie back into the priory :( Better movement and vocals required in the next round please
liam_valid - December 4, 2007 05:16 PM (GMT)
Finalposter through to the next round is Hiro with the Arctic Monkeys Fluorescent Adolescent. Well frankly the one vote you recieved says it all. Thats one of my current fave songs and you murdered it. You are lucky to be through, although you might be more suited to next weeks theme
liam_valid - December 4, 2007 05:23 PM (GMT)
last but not least then its this years'chico' Gav with the camp 'itsy bitsy' I thought he might have got through on comedy value but with not a single vote, the gamble never paid off :(
liam_valid - December 4, 2007 05:28 PM (GMT)
So through the next round its:

Lex
Mo
Petalp
SB
Trisco
This weeks theme is D.I.S.C.O :dancer1: :dancer1: Voting will start as soon as i have everyones song and i will prob pm you all after work tonight to remind you :)

He only got that vote cos I could not vote for my own and hate Timmy Mallet and Robbie Williams! :D So it was me that decided that! Artics are Ok but i prefer the older stuff that they base their sound on. It wasn't a bad song though. :ok:

Why thanks Liam. :D Leona Lewis, who is SHE? I'll be beatign her to all the music awards in no time
Can I just say that I picked Dusty becuase I love her to bits, and as a tribute to her. She was was a troubled, vulnerable woman with an effortless unique voice. She struggled with bouts of depression throughout her career, and with sexuality issues. She made a successful comeback with the help of the Pet Shop boys in the late 80s. Just as her career was reviving she she was told her breast cancer was terminal. She died in 1999 aged 59. She was pesented with her OBe whilst in hospital as she was unlikley to live long enough to receive it. She was posthumously inducted into the music hall of fame. The Queen of Blue Eyed Soul, Best Britsh soul singer we've ever had and one of the best voices of all time. Why Motown refused to sign her up I do not know  One of the best singers of all time
I'll post some Dusty songs in a minute :D

Hey, you are not far wrong. The story is that Aretha rejected it and then Dusty recorded it. Then when Aretha heard how great Dusty sang it she made her won version, but it was too late as Dusty had already had a hit so Aretha did it as a B side.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Son_of_a_Preacher_ManMany musos rightfully dub Dusty's the definitive version but there are a few good versions, and I also like Aretha's, she rocks  in fact I was tempted to use it but felt Dusty should be used. At home i playe 3 versions - Aretha, Dusty and Bobby Gentry . :)
SON OF A PREACHER MAN COVERS
Aretha Franklin - really good!
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=g_9Alh4pbLgTina Turner - has it's moments, she's a great singer.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=jyE9a_AaGgEBobby Gentry - can't find on youtube sadly but it is good sort of country funky up tempo, similar to Dusty's with more twangy guitar bits.
Joss Stone - it's well sung, but goes to show how good Dusty actually was when you hear a decent singer sing this and it's not half as good.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=R_NytNSI5H4Dina Carroll - again good but adds nothing new.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Te049yFxjscDolly Parton and also Nancy Sinatra are worth checking out but can't find them on youtube.
Collide - this is really bizarre

No I understand the gesture :D Dutch tradtion with the ginger biscuits and all. George isn't actually Dutch but he lived in Holland fwhere he was edcuated for many years while his dad (who is part Dutch) worked out there on the reclamation of the polderland (he was a hydrographic surveyor). The family has a lot of Dutch friends and stuff and they still liek their Dutch foods. :) And we have no speculaas at the moment, or cuminkasse - that gouda with the spicy seed in it - either :( I like eatign the gouda with those huge pickled gherkins, I chop them up and put them on sticks :D

Yip, the songs in this group were shocking.. with the absolute and noble exception of SB's choice, which would normally obliterate even half-decent competition.
I love Dusty's singing in this song.. I think that it is one of the best showcases for her voice. It is a bona fide classic!
So.. excellent choice SB! :ok:
Oh, re: Holland and food.. bought some mature gouda at the weekend. The cheese was called 'Old Amsterdam', and boy was it good!!! :D
Oh, and happy birthday for tomorrow SB!! Will also extend birthday greeting in relevant thread when it arises..
