Title: Sports Personality of the Year Nominations
Dinky Jo - November 30, 2007 08:42 PM (GMT)
The nominations for British Sports Personality of the Year are out - and Murray has got himself a nomination:
Three current world champions and three runners-up are on the shortlist, with a total of seven sports represented:
Joe Calzaghe - Undisputed world super-middleweight boxing champion.
Lewis Hamilton - World championship runner-up in his rookie Formula One season.
Ricky Hatton - Fights Floyd Mayweather for WBC world title on eve of show.
Andy Murray - Broke into the world top 10 despite an injury that ruled him out of Wimbledon.
Christine Ohuruogu - Returned from one-year ban for missing three drugs tests to land world 400m title in Osaka.
Paula Radcliffe - Won the New York Marathon just 10 months after giving birth to a baby daughter.
Jason Robinson - Retired after playing key part in England making the Rugby World Cup final.
Justin Rose - Captured golf's European Order of Merit title.
James Toseland - Claimed the World Superbikes Championship for the second time.
Jonny Wilkinson - Shrugged off injury to help England to Rugby World Cup final.
Any thoughts?
Do you think they've got it right?
Is there anyone who has been missed?
Or anyone who you really don't think should be there?

Interesting to note that Andy Murray is on the list, but Jamie Murray isn't :nope:

Andy shoudl be on the list IMO. But then so shoudl Jamie after winning that GS  My partner actualyl said he'd bet on Jamie winning it and he isn;t even there! Disgrace. Still there are others who are great and nto there so ....
Annoys me that there is no snooker and darts considering we are world beaters in both  I don't think he won as much thsi year but Phil Taylor who just won the GS of Darts has been world number oen for ages. he's the ebst darter in the world, he's the GOAT !

Jamie should be there......:( :(
Great entertainment throughout the dreich wimbers!

just goes to show that Andy has a better PR team than Jamie really
I reckon Hamilton will walk it with Ricky Hatton and Paula Radcliffe as the also rans.
I reckon Tim Henman should be in there, he's been a great ambassador for tennis despite not having huge success along the way. He's a great role model for good manners and tenacity.

oh, it annoys me beyond belief that there's no cyclists on the list. Vicky Pendleton won three Gold medals at the World Championships in Mallorca this year and the British Cycling Team took home over half of the medals available :ok: Vicky Pendleton is a wonderful ambassador for cycling - she's funny, comes across brilliantly in interviews and most importantly she's actually clean :D But I guess after getting Nicole Cooke on the list last year it was a bit much to hope that there might be another cyclist on the list this year
Wise_Analyst - December 1, 2007 11:47 AM (GMT)
Calzaghe should win it, but Hamilton probably will. Hamilton had an outstanding first season, but at the end of the day he didn't win anything (and there's a good argument that he bottled it). What's more, the likelihood is that he'll win the driver's championship at least once in the future, whereas Calzaghe's getting on a bit now - he deserves it more. Let's hope that the Brits don't go for glorious failure over genuine achievements this time.
And Jamie Murray should not be on the list. Doubles is a sub-sport of singles tennis, and mixed doubles is a sub-sport of regular doubles - it really isn't taken very seriously by anyone. He did well to choose a partner who could carry him to the title, but let's just give him an award for Outstanding Contributions to Equality or something. Admittedly, Andy Murray didn't have a spectacular season, but he at least achieved it at the highest level of his sport.
WimbledonAce - December 1, 2007 01:46 PM (GMT)
I had forgotton about Jamie Murray - how bad am I??!!
Tim Henman was 5th fave on William Hill, and he isnt even on the list!
Think Lewis will walk it anyway which is fair enough. Not much to choose from this year!

Pretty much agree with Wise here. Joe Calzaghe is the outstanding candidate given his tremendous success over the last ten years. Lewis Hamilton will more than probably get it though, which is a little ridiculous in my opinion. James Toseland would also be right up there in contention if I had anything to do with it, but he won't be.
Lex - December 1, 2007 03:59 PM (GMT)
it is Sports Personality of the Year though, and if you see who have had the column inches (ooerr) then I reckon Hamilton wins hands down
Unless he wins the championship next year, he'll be nowhere
liam_valid - December 1, 2007 04:20 PM (GMT)
is Lewis a great sports personality though? He always seems shy and quiet when i see him on tv. Ricky Hatton seems to have a great personality when he gives interviews so i would like him to win but i dont know if they actually vote on their personality, its more of their achievements aint it? in which case it should be called sports achievement of the year and i would vote for jason robinson coz he is drop dead gorgeous

I see your point but I think doubles is very competitive these days and deserves to eb taken much more seriously. Jamie was a realtive unknown and beat the big names in the sport such as Jonas. In my book that deserves credit.
MissSospanFach - December 1, 2007 11:26 PM (GMT)
Can't say that I agree that doubles doesn't deserve credit. It's a sport in its own right and deserves more publicity. Having said this, I don't think Jamie deserved to be on the list this year. He's made good progress but he really needs a men's doubles slam to warrant nomination.
Also, as much as I love Tim Henman, don't think he should have been on the list either as, after all, the award is for sporting achievement in 2007 not a 'lifetime achievement' award.
Personally, I think Calazaghe deserves it. I'm not a fan of boxing but I know enought to know that he's been overlooked for so many years and last months win highlights how great a boxer he his.
Having said this, I'm sure Hamilton will win, although I'd rather see him get it in the same year as he wins the f1 championship (which he will).
Re the comment that Andy has better PR than Jamie- I think they have the same team!
Pebs - December 1, 2007 11:42 PM (GMT)
Given Jamies achievement this year - and isnt that what this award is about? - I would say he should have been included... though, doubles doesnt get much attention so not totally surprised to see him not in there..
Murray has done well all things considered with injuries and such like... but not being his biggest fan, I aint that bothered if he gets it.
I think someone like Paula should get it... although, if they are going to give it to someone who didnt quite win but had a fair amount of success - Jason Robinson would be the one for me :)

I'm not 100% sure but I know that the main guy, Patrice something, works for them both. I completely agree that Andy has more spotlight than Jamie which is now compounded by the fact that Jamie's coach, Louis Cayer, will now be helping Andy too!

To be quite frank sports personality is always the biggest load of bull*hit. The person that should win never does, like when Zara phillips won. Not being funny but when everything is handed to you on a plate it is hardly a great achievement.

If he'd won the men's doubles at Wimbledon then I might agree, because that is taken seriously, and has been since the days of McEnroe and Fleming.
However, mixed doubles really is just a bit of fun. Sure, no-one wants to lose, but it's not taken anywhere near as seriously as proper tennis. You often see the players laughing and joking throughout the match, which is great, but can you imagine Federer and Nadal being all giggles throughout their Wimbledon final? Was quite the opposite if I remember. This Sports Personality award has a history of being ridiculous, but in my opinion, Jamie Murray being on the list would have taken it to new heights.

I agree. Obviously the award isn't the most prestigious, but it's still taken quite seriously in this country, which frankly is a joke.
For a start, no-one has a clue what the criteria for winning is, especially the people that decide it. If it was really based on personality, Hamilton doesn't really deserve it, being blessed with the charisma of a sponge. But Steve Davis won it once in the 80s when he was seen as duller than ditchwater, so it can't really be based on that.
If it were based on achievements, again, Hamilton doesn't deserve to win it because several on the list have actually won things. I appreciate that he's attracted a lot of people to the sport during a very impressive season, which makes him a worthy contender, but not someone who should be winning the thing. To me, the award merely reflects who the British tabloid press have bandwagoned the most, which makes it utterly redundant.
Dinky Jo - December 2, 2007 03:32 PM (GMT)
Just in case people are interested, the way the nominations are worked out is that a number of newspapers and magazines get to vote for 10 people they think should win it. Each vote on a newspaper shortlist counted as one vote towards that sportsperson. There was also an expert panel who listed 10 names as well. The expert panel were:
Dame Kelly Holmes, Nick Faldo, Sir Steve Redgrave, Alan Hansen, Lord Seb Coe, Clare Balding, Jonathan Davies, Barry McGuigan, David Coulthard, Sir Trevor Brooking, Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, Greg Rusedski
You can see the full lists of nominations

I realise that but neither did she have to scrape together the money for equipment, lessons etc. She didn't have to beg for a scolarship or sponsorship. She could do all the training she wanted when she wanted. How many sportspeople is it that easy for?
