Description: Song Choices Week 6

Mo aka Mz O'Hara - November 22, 2007 11:44 AM (GMT)
Here they are...subject to change of course. Its Love Songs Week....Motown was postponed, rumour has it by Simon.

Beverley - Without You
Hope - Hurt
Leon - You Don't Know Me
Niki - Power of Love
Rhydian - Somewhere
Same Difference - Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now

Dinky Jo - November 22, 2007 01:41 PM (GMT)
I don't watch this show, but just figured I'd pin this post - but gotta say: someone is gonna try and sing Without you? I hope they have a good voice with a decent range, either that or they'll change the octaves at which it's sung at, 'cos that's a really tough song I think.

Hi Jo, the person, Beverley has an extremely good voice, so she should do well with this number.

Am more excited about Niki singing Power of Love.....I absolutely adore that song and it has been said before on the X Factor forum that this could be a great number for Niki....so Go Girl

Rhydian - Somewhere. If this is 'Somewhere' from Westside story, then it is a brilliant number for Ryd  Another firm firm fave song with me and can't wait to hear him hopefully put in a fine performance, after last weeks...... :yikes:

Theres a place for us, somewhere a place
for us.......hold my hand and we're half way
there.....hold my hand and I'll take you there...

Hope - Hurt. B) B) really :yikes: Can't see them having a cat in hells chance of doing well with this number.....its a Christine Aguilera number some heavens sake....nuff said.

Leon - You don't know me. Don't think I know this number.

Same Difference - Probably suit them down to the ground, so no doubt a good performance for their fans - whoever they may be

SuperBRAT - November 22, 2007 04:45 PM (GMT)
OMG I think I shall be asleep this week. What a load fo dull stuff they have picked. Still, at least they aren't forcing Over (done) The Rainbow on us again roflmao

All the songs are slow (exceot SD) and it's gonna be a snoozefest. Surely they coudl have doen better than thsi dross?

SuperBRAT - November 22, 2007 08:51 PM (GMT)
My thoughts, although I am hardly inspired

Beverley - Without You

So sick of this being abused on these shows, and overdone a la Mariah Carey. The only version that actually shows real emotion is the original by Harry Nielsen, otherwise it's such a cliche it's meaning is lost. Sure Bev will do a good performance as always, but song is maybe too big for her? She could get shouty and she'll have to be restrained which might be boring  I hope she can find a way to not overdo it and yet stand out and shine. I assume it is the Nielsen song

Hope - Hurt

Assuming this is Christina Aguillera, hate the song, drab and annoying - like Hope so great choice. ;) Seriously, it does involve singing talent and so they are doomed. Poor pheobe will ahve to work hard to carry the others. Then again they have a huge backing tack  Still, be grateful they are not performing Dirty! roflmao Actually wish they were, that would be sooo funny. :lmaao:

Leon - You Don't Know Me

Assume it is the Michael Buble song, done by the likes of Nat King Cole and Ray Charles. A bit safe. Leon needs to show more versatility but can see they don't want to take risks. Rather a dull song despite it's credentials. I'd have gone for a more up tempo love swing love song, plenty to choose from. He might wish he'd saved Fly Me to the Moon for this week, this could be boring and kind of we've seen it all before. He'll need to pull out a really beautiful effortless vocal, but he has the Scottish vote and the sympathy so will probably not be bottom 2.

Niki - Power of Love

Well this is the power ballad from hell! Hate it. I think they could have done better. If I'd gone power ballad i'd have tried Total Eclipse of the Heart, it has some delicate vocals as well thatshe'd have handled well. I might have gone a bit softer for her as she has had quite a few belters lately. My concern is this is a dated 80s song and synonymous with cringey shoulder pads and huge hair. Niki is older and how will they dress her? I am not bothered, but the audience seem to be. On the evocals, concern is that the whole song is song in a higher key. I think she'll be really great, she might do a Titanic theme on this. Bet she wished she'd saved Celine's song for now as the comp toughens.

Rhydian - Somewhere

If this is from South Pacific whatshername - Latin name - who sang it was a soprano so the operatic link is there. Shirley Bassey also did a really great version. I think he'll have plenty to get stuck into here, the full register and plenty of big notes - the closing one will be fabulous. Lots of emotion and th eimportant DRAMA that Rhyd needs, he doesn;t need Westlife snoozefests. This will be perfromance of the night, a show stopper, and will NOT go wrong. Look forward to this. :D I would have fancied seeign him do Bonnie Tyler Eclipse fo the Heart also. My fave power ballad but don't tell anyone. ;)

Same Difference - Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now

Well they had to go for cheesy-ish and up tempo. Could not do serious love song as bro and sis, and also have to work with their voices which are excellent but mainstream, not soul or rock. I still have concerns as it IS a love song, but I can see the up tempo optimistic "nothing's gonna stop us" working positively for them. There are some big solo vocals in it though - can they pull them off? Not mad on the song, but it will stand out as it's up tempo and jolly so every chance of going through. Shoudl have given them Time of My life instead - it;s similar, and VERY popluar with the Dirty Dancing revival. :)

Here's my thoughts :

Beverley - Without You : Bit of an obvious choice. Like SB says very overdone song. Think she should do it ok but would rather have heard something fresh.

Hope - Hurt : Don't know what this song is so can't really comment on this one. Just reading the posts you guys reminded me about Hope's backing tracks - I noticed the same thing they always have loads of help. Seems a bit unneccesary when there are 5 of them. Expect they will be saved by the judges again.

Leon - You Don't Know Me : Don't know this one. I feel Leon could go this week. If I don't know it chances are there will be alot of people who don't know it and viewers like to be familiar with the songs.

Niki - Power of Love : Great song for Niki, should be able to do a good job with this. Lets hope they tone down the hair and bosoms!

Rhydian - Somewhere : Don't know this one either (I'm doing well!) I'm sure Rhyd will be ok though.

Same Difference - Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now : One of my fave songs in the world ever!!! I'm sick of people murdering this one - I recall the Conways doing a spectacularly bad version. Can't see SD doing this justice, there are some big moments in it which they don't have the vocal for. I can already imagine their contorted expressions too! Lets hope the high school outfits are banished this week, please Simon!!!

dl04 - November 22, 2007 09:18 PM (GMT)
Guys, Somewhere is from West Side Story

It'll suit Rydian to the ground, with this rangey operatic tone.

Will do a more in-depth view but i'm doing an essay, so must dash roflmao

BIG-TODGER - November 22, 2007 10:14 PM (GMT)
I think the song choices are pretty good this week, not because i like all the songs but they showcase vocal talent well.

Beverley - Without You, not a 100% certain she can pull this one off, but if she can it should be great- it has quite a range so quite demanding vocally.

Hope - Hurt-not the kind of song they usually do, but i think it should work

Leon - You Don't Know Me-this should suite his voice, and if he can curb the nerves he'll be ok.

Niki - Power of Love-i hate this song, BUT it should suite Nikki's voice-no doubt she'll belt it out.

Rhydian - Somewhere-this is an inspired choice for him, about time he got back to something serious-it should be the show stopper, and also one of my all time fav songs.

Same Difference - Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now -i don't give a damn can't stand these two.

Miss Suzi - November 23, 2007 06:12 AM (GMT)
Without You- Beverley
………great song…….covered by so many legends….Shirley Bassey…Cilla Black…Kelly Clarkson form the first american idol…she did a good job…but my favourite contemporary still has to be early career ,Mariah Carey singing it…..she did the song justice…….. Now can Beverley do it justice…. I think she would…at least we are getting to the end game…so you can take the slight risk and ‘do or die’ sort of…. But I think she can sing it just remembering to ..breath properly or the song runs away from you.. ..It's true the original always carry more emotion..because it is more sincere to the lyrics...even Dolly Parton's I will always love had more sincere emotions than Whitney Houston's version...but Whitney's vocals just gave it a certain range and texture that breathes new life into the song and so does Mariah..IMO..

Hope – Hurt

….Christina Aguilera…..boy…. all these songs by high strung power divas are so hard to replicate…but I think what might be the undoing here is the fact that I wouldn’t include this particular song with power ballads…you certainly need massive pipes on you for these Aguilera type songs..but ..I don’t think it is really popular …to that tv audience level…but if they are smart ..this will be the time to use the song to sell themselves and stand out a bit….

Leon – You don’t know me…
- oldie but a goodie….good for restaurant dinners…..but I prefer the Ray charles version….thought Michael buble did a relatively good job….some love songs do well to stay in the past….and not be redone too often… like the righteous brothers- song from the Patrick swayze , Demi..film ghost….-unchained melody..., the songs are that good..I guess that is why they are classics.. I don’t know about this …but hey…..it’s doable...as for wether it is time for Leon to go...am no fortune teller but it might..

Niki-the power of love.-

…..hmmm….if it is the Huey and lewis style of the song ….someone might struggle a bit…..but if it is the Jennifer rush…or god forbid the Celine Dion approach…..sorry..I think Beverley will have done a better job….cause once the yardstick is Celine…you need you’re a-game even if its mediocre…. I hope there is a surprise here…….. I really don't mind anyone showing their physical assets...(breasts and what nots) as long as you do the singing...afterall this is showbiz and you can't hide from that.... But just make sure your vocal cords do the singing... cause needless to say..makeup and breasts don't sing....

Rhydian…- ..Yes..Dlo4 ..it is the west side story one........ covered by the much revered Barbara Streisand...whom I really think is an okay singer..but more of a better actress...but it is different strokes for different folks so......
Josh Groban also did a good cover...not bad for contemporary take..... but Rhydian should handle it with his usual aplomb....

I wished it was over the rainbow... :) and also I don't see why he doesn't try a Celine love ballad.... Could actually possibly do a Celine Dion song the best…but the best rendition of this song over the rainbow..ever was Eva Cassidy (IMO)………Bless her departed spirit……lovely. I think some on american idol 5 did a good rendition..I think Katherine Mcphee or something like that was her name…..

Same difference – Nothing Gonna stop us -
..is actually a wise song for them…my only gripe is that they ought to harmonise very well since they will up against the likes of Beverly on a solo effort…cause usually with love ballads being solo..and playing with the audience….playing is the wrong word….drawing the audience into the emotion of the song is key…… But who knows….they’ve gotten this far…it’s not what I say that will get anyone booted off.. And...personally SB... I don't mind they being brother and sister talking about love..... :P...Is the world that depraved ..that a brother can't love a sister anymore.... its not like they are going to breakout into tears in a fit of passion on stage and start making out........ I'll say rock on..!! ..... though there is better competition still left...

(* I'm not implying brothers and sisters should be making out..... :sicky: ..it is genetically unwise......please..don't quote me..)

There seems to be specualation on the X Factor site, as to whether The Power of Love is the Frankie Goes to Holllywood song, or the Jennifer Rush song. CANT be The Huey Lewis one, surely :o

I'd like to see Rhyd do the FGTH one though, that would work with the drama and all. :D
