Title: 'End of term' tennis reports...
Description: Who's dunce, and who's top of class?
MrInvisible - November 19, 2007 05:11 PM (GMT)
As we're virtually at the end of the season, with just a couple of exhibitions, Davis Cup and the Seniors event at Albert Hall left, how about some 'school-report' style summaries for players, both ATP, and WTA this year...
I'll start off...
FERRER
David has worked tremendously hard this year, with plenty of homework on his forehand in evidence. He did well enough to move from middle set up to top set, although was still a little way behind class prefect Roger in his marks. With continued effort, David can make more progress in the 'slam' examinations.

FEDERER
Roger has achieved fantastic results in all slam exams this year, with the exception of French, and Pottery (erm, clay) where he still lags behind Rafael. Although he has daydreamed from time to time in class this year, he is still the top performer in the class.
EFFORT: A- PERFORMANCE: A
MURRAY
Andy has shown some exciting progress this year, particularly in the Indoor European Studies course, despite being off school for a long-time with an erm repetitive strain wrist injury... :) He has not been overawed by the best kids in the class. However, there are concerns his loud-mouth has got him into trouble from time to time, and that his Mum's decision to save money on sacking his private tutor, may harm his results in next year's slam exams.
EFFORT: A- PERFORMANCE: B+
Anyone else want a go on this...?

Good stuff :ok: I'll have to think who to do.

A pleasant student, it was a shame to see the back of this pupil, who left, after the punishing toll of exams crept up on him. Timothy missed a large part of the year through illness. He had problems being bullied by a nasty young student called Dmitry. However, Timothy exacted revenge, during the class trip to New York in August, only to get beaten up by a powerful French kid called Jo Wilfred.
Timothy did leave school with a smile on his face however, at the end-of-school prom, during which he successfully fought off some big tough looking Croatian kids, and did a sweet duet with Jamie.
Timothy may offer to help young Andrew with his homework now that his mum has fired his private tutor.

Djokovic
This pupil has shown promise for some time now and he began to fulfil it this year. A very good spring in the minor options (except for a disappointing performance in pottery) was followed by a very solid and even improving performance in the major options during summer - pottery, agronomy, and outdoor brick-laying. There seems no doubt that this boy can achieve a lot when he puts his mind to it - and he is aware of that too. He should, however, not consider that his successes this year mean he has made it to the next step - he should have discovered quite how far up that is after missing out in the outdoor brick-laying exam at New York. He has shown a tendency to let things get to his head - a bit less joking around would do him some good, not least because it has (justifiably) annoyed some of the more senior pupils who have been on that step for a while now. He also discovered at the end of the year that without maximum effort and fresh preparation he is nothing like the player he can be or was earlier in the year - I don't think that is merely down to the options being indoors.
All in all a very good solid year, even an excellent year, and perhaps it is for the best that he received a sharp reminder towards the end of the year of what all-round dedication (including general organisation of the timetable to ensure freshness) it requires to get to the top and stay there.
One product of this year is that much more is expected of this student, and it is to be hoped that he will make good use of the lessons he has learned this year. He should be aware that, whilst more of the same will mean another good year, it will be considered a let down in some quarters (he may add to that perception if he continues to joke about) - in particular he has much to do in the minor pottery study options. It will be disappointing if this year proves to have been a peak - he must consolidate and continue to move forwards. He knows he can do it, he just must make the preparation and put in the work to ensure that happens.

Jiri Novak:
Jiri has done us teachers a favour by only playing in two minor Czech tournaments, sparing us the boring tennis. However, considering the fact that he did get 4550 dollars for simple, utter, cr*p, we are afraid that his grades may not be flattering. Nevertheless, Jiri's unforgettable contribution to tennis by restraining himself from playing will earn him an E for Effort.

After a series of desperate appeals, us teachers have decided to increase World number 922 Jiri Novak's effort grade to E+. He does, indeed, have a very patient game style, which consists of waiting for his opponent to make unforced errors. This very original game style has taken him to as high as world number 5. However, considering his rather dismal season, we shall not take that in account.
His height (1m90) which contributed to his game shall be left us aside as well, as we can only thank his mother for that, his mother who made delicious soup.

Us teachers have decided to make a final change for Jiri Novak's grades.
Due to the fact that he is still, rather miraculously, in the top 1000, we have decided to boost his performance grade to G+.
