Title: Stand-up comedy
Description: Who are the best and worst?
Dinky Jo - November 13, 2007 01:49 PM (GMT)
Discuss all stand-up comedians here! Whether they are people you've seen live or just seen their stand-up on TV, who do you think are the best and worst, and why!! :)

It's been ages since I've been to a stand-up but i've seen a lot of DVDs and stuff:
Ross Noble is just awesome, so very very funny and only slighty nuts. His stage show is just brilliant - he'll start on one story and go off on a load of mentalist tangents (something about Jack Bauer and turkey grease springs to mind) before eventually finishing his story. H'es great at interacting with the audience and dealing with hecklers too.
Dave Gorman - not sure whether his comedy shows count as stand up comedy, but he does stand up and it is funny, so i'll go with it!!! My favourite has got to be his Googlewhack adventure - he's just so brilliant at phrasing everything and his comedic timing is awesome. He's helped somewhat by his little slide show, but generally it's all down to his presentation skills. one of the DVD extras is a Q & A session with the audience and he really is very quick-witted :)

oh, i must say i love Russell Brand's stand up too - i think he's generally rubbish on TV, just not funny at all, but his stand up is really really funny! Not everyone's taste, obviously, and I suspect that he will end up running out of things to talk about - I mean, there's only so long you can talk about your heroin addiction and how many women you've slept with, but when he does talk about, it's very very funny :ok:

Don't watch much these days as I often get the feeling I've heard it before or that the comedian is purely trying to shock. But I think the best one of modern times is PETER KAY, he's a real comic genius and highly original. His Pheonix Nights is hilarious too. :ok:
Most of my faves are older stuff:
Jo Brand is one of my faves, I think she is still going! Brillaint deadpan delivery at it's most deadly.
Ben Elton - best fo his generation and makes the most modern comedians look stupid. Class observation and political wit. Aims his jokes at that who ask for it as it should be.
Rik Mayal and Ade Edmonson - OMG are they bonkers! Ararchic and random, just how I like it.
I also used to like Jasper Carrot, Lenny Henry and various others who I forget. There's some realyl good American ones but I never remember their names. Two of the guys off th eold Whose Line Is it Anyway were hilarious.
And going back further I liked Les Dawson and Bob Monkhouse. And many others .....

Jo brand is hillarious SB :D She has such a sarcasm and wit that you just have to respect her material. No other female comic is as self-depreciating as her either

She's marvellous, and I never get bored of her. I love it when she is on game and chat shows as she really delivers the put downs. I pray that she will go on Johnathon Ross and have a go at him!
She went to my Uni btw, Brunel, but She'd left when I started. She studied to be a mental health nurse. I think she worked at Bethlem.

I loved Rik Mayall when I saw him many, many years ago and more recently saw Russell Brand who was extremely funny and sex on a stick - so extra value there!
Saw Paul Merton once - didnt go much on him so would have him down as a no-no.
People I have only seen recordings of their live stuff but would love to see actually live are Alan Davies - he is just soooo funny in Urban Trauma.. and my alltime fav - Billy Conolly

Not seen too many standups... will have to check some of this lot out.
Personally, I remember liking Jack Dee and Jasper Carrott quite a lot when I was younger. Dee for his deadpan delivery, although he could be a bit hit and miss, and Carrott for how excited he used to get during his rants.

Eddie Izzard is one of my all-time faves too! :D
I think that his best stuff was around the mid 90s. I never tire of hearing him do his James Mason/ Sean Connery accents.
