Title: Womens Draw
Description: nto looking great for the quarters

SuperBRAT - July 4, 2006 12:50 PM (GMT)
The fizz has really gone from the womens draw now. I'd hoped to see challengin quarters, but an ugly whitewash of the haplessly inept Dementieva is nto helping. It is a shame that Dem and Myskins made the quarters. I was hoping to see Venus and Vaidisova up there. The onyl great surprise is Li bu tthye are syaing Clijsters will demolish her, as with Bremond and JHH. I really liek JHH but please spare me an all Belgian Semi  Clijsters has had far too easy a time so far and I find her boring. Let's hope MoMo can win it this year and give us a great quarter, semi and final. Alos Hingis being lost early has ruined interest.

Any views?

Mind you a streaker has just run on so it is getting better! roflmao

Trust u SB!

I have to say that i cannot think of a womens match i've seen this year, and to be honest it's sad that i feel that i've not missed much.

With the exception of Li, there's been nothing of real worth this year, and as much as i like JHH and Kimmi, i can do without them in a final.

No Williamses, Lindsay or Hingis ....says it all for me :(

Where are the Arantxa Sanchez Vicario's?

I loved her style of play, and found her a little bit of a fox too, but loved the "points not over until it's over" mentality!

Yes I enjoyed Sanchez V's attitude. She was very entertaining wasn't she? Well I liek MoMo and JHH's style the best, but Myskina and Dem are awful. Worst quarter was Dem v Sharapova, the streaker was good though! :D

Agreed, SB. Caught the a good part of all 4 matches today, and have to say that it was a deflating experience for the most part..:(

Not much tension at all, precious little quality play, and barely any of the 'Wow!' factor that I'd really like to see when top players meet each other and (in theory) raise their game.

Maybe the streaker had the 'Wow!' factor (didn't catch that bit)?! Read that he did a cartwheel!!

Agree with your thoughts about Clijsters. It's a shame as I really like her as a person. But I do find my mind wandering when she plays, doesn't quite hold my attention. :coffee:

I agree, the Maria-Elena quarter-final was poor - though I did expect that would be the case. Elena's serve just hinders her too much on grass, a complete contrast to Maria. I think about half-way through the second set, Hawkeye showed the ALL of her serves had been to the Maria forehand

I do miss Lindsay and Serena, and it's a shame Venus and Martina lost so early... :(

JymJilly - July 4, 2006 11:36 PM (GMT)
I thought it was a really atrocious day for Womens Tennis. Really bad. One of the worst days Wimbledon has seen for a long time. Yes S.B is correct the streaker was by far the best entertaniment.
I expect the semis to follow suit. I see everybody was of the same opinion on the BBC board today.

Sharapova v Dementieva was a real letdown wasn't it & of course it's the one the BBC decided to lead with during the day!

What I saw of Henin v Bremond was surprisingly hard fought - some really entertaining old style tennis full of variety.

Clijsters v Li was as I thought a hard fought from the baseline and if it had gone into a third set then it could have got very interesting.

Mauresmo v Myskina wasn't as good as it could of been - trust Myskina to suddenly lose form like that. Though I wonder if there is something about Mauresmo's game that gives her problems - Their match in the QF's last year wasn't anything special & their match at the Fed Cup last year was the most wretched match i've ever seen! Both times the problems seemed to be more Myskina than Amelie (though Amelie played badly in the Fed Cup as well - just not quite as bad - she actually managed to get the ball over the net.)

Semi's on paper look very interesting & will hopefully continue the pretty high level of the last two years.

In Sharapova, Mauresmo faces someone who plays very much like Serena & Lindsay who have both beaten her in the last few years - it's a good contrasting match.

With the other semi it really depends on which Clijsters turns up - the one who couldn't face a battle in Paris or the one who put up a fight in Eastbourne.

Yes I think Kim is a lovely person, very sporting too and always gives credit to her opponents, hugs them at the net even if she loses etc. In fact yesterday I think she even told the umpire that the ball was in at the expense of losing apoint herself. Commendable. However, her tennis just doe snto hold my attention. I have nto seen all her matches of course, but what i have seen has shown two type sof matches - 1. easy victory over lower seed, with little excvitemt and quite ugly play OR 2. looking outclassed by top five player like JHH, rushing shots, making too many unforced errors, looking liek she cannto work out a way to challenge at this level. She is quite predictable in how she plays and where she get sin draws. So I guess consistent but doesn't inpsire me and the fact that she has decided to retire way in advance kind of make sme see her as a bit of a quitter. I can see why, but really I am mor einspired by players who see how it goes and carry on. Look at Pirece and Davenport for example.

Yeah the streaker was funny, we got to see his erm... you know what! anyway! Albeit quick! roflmao

There wa snto WOW factor anywhere, I woudl say though that Bremmond acquitted herself extremely well, lovely tennis and the quality with her and JHH was great, but of course you always felt JHH was the winner so no suspense. Na Li acquitted herself well too, but again I felt there was onyl ever oen winner. MoMo let me down yesterday, and Myskina was dire.

I agree, you are abotu right there. Shame Shara v Dem was the lead match.

I feel sorry for Bremmond - the tennis was good qulaity and th epoints hard fought. That girl came through qualies didn't she? So I feel she deserves much attention, although the newcomer attention seems to have goen to Li - fair enough, 1st Chinese to quarters and all, but she was a seed not a qualifier. Both deserve credit, but I just think it has all bene showered on Li and Bremmond ignored.

Yes, i'll give best play to JHH v Bremmond for yesterday, with credit to Li too but I felt she coudl have taken a set and bottled it. I'm hoping yesterday was MoMo's blip over early before the semis, as I want her to come through to the finals. She is my ideal winner, if nto then JHH.

Pick up the Guardian today - they have a double page spread of the streaker from the back!

I am nto so bothered about the streakers' assets, I just though t was so funny ans so well timed really, in the dullest match fo the day.

COME ON MARIA!!!

WimbledonAce - July 5, 2006 03:22 PM (GMT)
Well I was watching both quarters on court 1 and from someone who does not like womens tennis I thoroughly enjoyed both matches. Justine really impressed me, she has a great style of play for someone so little! Bremond put up a good fight, I just think the big occasion got to her. Mauresmo v Myskina was my fave of the 2 matches tho with the form swinging both ways. Found myself cheering on Myskina much to the annoyance of a die hard Mauresmo fan beside me (think she swung the other way too!) Was a shame she had dips in her play, loved her stroppy on court antics though, I shall continue to follow her now in future tournys! I have not been swayed, men still remain my fave to watch but I was by no means disappointed yesterday :ok:

WimbledonAce - July 5, 2006 03:23 PM (GMT)
PS Justine to win please!!!

Hey GS :)

Well, I did think that might happen, considering Elena's serve. Unfortunately I didn't get to see the Justine match - in fact, I didn't get to see Severine throughout the whole tournament.

I know, it was typical Myskina  Though of course Amelie has the game to throw Anastasia off her timing...

It'll be tough to match last year's semis, but hopefully this year's can deliver. I agree, Mauresmo v Sharapova is a real contrast of styles, and it will interesting to see who can play their game better on the day. I do hope we don't get a repeat of the dismal RG semi-final between the Belgians...
