Title: Venus's year in 2007!

dl04 - October 22, 2007 02:36 PM (GMT)
As the season is almost at a close, i thought it'd be a good idea if we post pictures about our fav players year's :D

So i'll do Venus's year in photos...........

Plays first tournament since October at Memphis. Seeded at number 7, Venus dropped a set against morigammi in round 1 and then cruised into the final where she beat the Israeli Shahar Peer 6-1 6-1.

user posted image

3 weeks later plays at the Miami tournament. Unseeded, she sweeps into the third round, but loses in a tight and edgy battle to former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova.

user posted image

Moves into the American claycourt season. First she plays Amelia Island. She beats Rezai, Schnyder and Tu to reach the quarters where she loses 6-2 6-3 to eventual champion Tatiana Golovin.

user posted image

Continuing on with her American clay-court season, she played Charleston( an event she won in 2004). Venus played great power tennis to sweep aside Stosur, Bardina, Chan and Medina Garrigues. In the semis loses a thriller to eventual champion Jankovic 6-3 3-6 6-7, despite leading by a break twice in the second set.

Venus's next event was the Fed Cup tie against belgium. Sporting a funky new 'do', she wins both her singles rubbers to ensure a whitewash American home victory.

Venus played her next event in Poland's capital Warsaw, again a title she had won in 2004. She had two solid victories over Krajieck and Dementieva before losing to second seed Kuznetsova in a tight 3 set encounter

Loses suprisingly in round two of her next event in Istanbul. As a former champion( in 2005), she is seeded at number 4 but loses to hard-hitting Frenchwoman Rezai 6-4 6-4

Plays her first Grand Slam since Wimbledon 2006 at the 2007 French Open. Seeded outside the top 20, is seeded to meet 3rd seed Jankovic in the third round. Sweeps past wildcard Cornet, and breaks her own service speed record against harkleroad, clocking a serve at 128mph! Meets Jankovic as expected in round 3 before putting up a ferocious fight in the first two sets, before fading away in the decider 4-6 6-4 1-6.

Next event was Wimbledon. Arrives very much under the radar( seeded 23rd). Her first three rounds were hardly unauspicious, dangerously close to the brink against Kudratysetva and morigammi. Finds form quickly however to dismantle the 2004 Champion Sharapova in the fourth round, the 2004 Us open champion Kuznetsova in the quarters and the recent RG runner up ivanovic in the semis without dropping a set.

In the final, the 3 time champion met suprise finalist Marion Bartoli. After a close first set, Venus pulled away from bartoli to claim a historic 4th Wimby title and 6th Slam overall.

Following her Wimbledon victory, Venus is assigned to the tie against Russia semi-final in the Fed Cup. Venus wins her two singles rubbers against Petrova and chakvetdaze, but America is just edged out of the final spot in the doubles.

user posted image

Starts off her American hardcourt season at San Diego. Beats Rodionova, Razzano and Hantuchova to reach the quarter-finals. In that quarter final is beaten by Anna Chakvetdaze 7-6 6-7 2-6, despite holding a matchpoint. Doesnt play anymore events until the Us Open.

Arrives at Flushing Meadows for the last Slam of the year at the Us Open. Seeded 12th is tipped as many as a real contender for the title. Is untroubled in her early rounds, beating nagy, Olaru and Bondarenko. In the fourth round faces a potential banana skin in Ana Ivanovic, but comes through easily 6-4 6-2. In the quarter-finals Venus avenges her two previous GS defeats to Jankovic by ousting the serb in a thrilling night match. Despite being down a set and a break, Venus claws her way through the match winning 4-6 6-1 7-6.

In her first Us Open semi since 2002, faces top seed and former champion justine Henin. In the match of the tournament Justine just edges out Venus 7-6 6-4 thus ensuring a Williams double for the tournament. Venus however can console herself with the shot of the tournament in the first set.

Nice stuff dl

Love the Seoul pics with the hat :D

Venus is remarkable to coem out and win Wimby like that despite nto her best year to date. Must say she blew Wimby apart in the end.

Great thread dl !

I was thinking of doing one for Justine, but the pages arn't big enough for all the trophy pictures :P

No ... honestly dl, she's done great! :dohh:

T01 - October 23, 2007 11:08 AM (GMT)
Well, dl, to be fair: apart from the Wimby win, Venus hasn't done much else that is worth mentioning about a player like Venus! She should have won that match against that Justine " I am much more open and friendly now" Henin.

Stll, good things may happen at the YEC! Go Venus! Hopefully a Venus - Serena finals for a change!

Venus has had a good year after the Spring but I am not sure that anyone can say she should have beaten Justine in that match. Justine was just that little bit better.

I'd like to see Venus step up that little bit more, I think she can, and that her and Justine can battle it out at the top next year hopefully with some others joining them up.

dl04 - October 23, 2007 01:49 PM (GMT)
I think Venus has done great, considering how potentially career threatening her wrist injury was late last year. I didnt even know when she'd be back.........

I mean who else could've performed like she did at Wimby! She was more dominant than Fed in the latter stages, and confirmed herself as a Wimby legend

Also i think her Us Open, she has nothing to feel bad about. She played great tennis, but just lost to an inspired Justine.

Hopefully next year, Venus will be injury free and will move back into the top 5. Tennis is better with Venus at her best  :yahoo:

I couldnt agree more with that. And I hope that she will be fighting for that number 1 spot again. She has had a great year in my opinion, lotsa finals and a grand Slam title.I hope she wins Australia next year.

The way linds played at Bali and Beijing, she's going to be really dangerous at the Aussie. Is several levels above most of the top 20 and should reach the quarters at least IMO ;)

I fear for Serena though, for her title defence. Her level has really dropped since Miami :(

The Dav - October 23, 2007 09:57 PM (GMT)
Linds is back in action in Quebec next week, so hopefully she'll pick up another title :D

Serena has been GOD AWFUL lately! Really annoying, I mean what's with this loopy top spin :o Is she trying to be Mauresmo? roflmao She needs to hit big and flat like she used to, at least Vee and Linds are still playing vintage tennis :D

I know!!!! :o

Far too much margin for error that Serena has on her shots. She's barely hitting winners anymore with these crappy 7-5 6-4 scorelines. Just hit the bal everywhere like Venus, Serena roflmao

I was watching Lindsay's match against hantuchova the other day, and at times it was like world number 1 Linds again. That backhand

Oh the Linds backhand is heaven  I was watching her bludgeon Julie Ditty with it the other day, poor Julie had no hope roflmao

I don't know what's with Serena, so few winners, the backhand always flying, I mean her serve is still the same, but the ground game needs major work...

I love how Vee still plays like she did in 2000, she knows what works :D

Venus did tone down her power a bit at Wimby this year, hitting with more depth but less winners. Still even at 70% power, she's still hitting huge

Her serve has really picked up too. Her serving against maria at Wimby was just    126mph in regularity.......

Yeah linds really knows how to dismantle the easier opposition. Poor Julie, was chasing balls in the warm-up roflmao
