The seeds are:
1. Blake
2. Ferrer
3. Robredo (withdrawn from the tournament, replaced by LL Gremelmayr)
4. Haas
5. Monaco
6. Nieminen
7. Karlovic
8. Verdasco
Projected QF between the seeds:
Blake - Nieminen
Verdasco - ? (perhaps Del Potro or T. Johansson)
Haas - Monaco
Ferrer - Karlovic
Not the most thrilling field, but a number of interesting points. Blake will want to gain points for the Shanghai race --- he's just dropped out of the top 8, overtaken by Robredo, but if he reaches at least the QF, I think he is guaranteed to overtake the Spaniard again. Tommy Haas is still very much in the race (only 15 points separate him from No. 7 Gonzalez), but he needs to try and pick up points here. Ferrer is as good as guaranteed his Shanghai spot, but I'm sure he won't mind picking up some points here. He has already played 20 tournaments this year, though, and I think that he needs to at least reach the semis to pick up any points here. I'm not sure playing here is really worth it for him.

T Johansson (SWE) d J Del Potro (ARG) 64 10 ret - illness
Ferrer obviously read my post above, and decided to pull out of the tournament. The lower half is very open now; Tommy might have a good chance to come through it.
Otherwise, no surprises, other than that Massu actually won a set against Karlovic despite his dire recent form :P . And Ancic is actually playing tennis again, and he even won. :o
I would like a Blake-Haas final please. But I wouldn't mind it if Mario made the final either. :)

i'm not expecting Ancic to do well, but getting some match wins under his belt will hopefully bode well for his 08 campaign.

Becker and Spadea going out are minor upsets perhaps, but otherwise nothing exciting has happened here yet.
Good for Tommy to get through to the QF though. Hopefully he will beat Monaco, and then whoever comes through from the depleted lower quarter (Karlovic?) to make the final.

And Ivo's tie-break power is still going! Let's hope the next match is the end of the road for him here though. :)

:o
Johannson saved five match points against Blake! There's still every chance for both Blake and Tommy to make Shanghai, provided they get some good results in the MS events. :ok:
vivahate - October 14, 2007 02:39 PM (GMT)
i guess Karlovic took the title
Dinky Jo - October 14, 2007 05:25 PM (GMT)
yep, Karlovic won in 3 :)
| QUOTE |
With the victory, Karlovic joins World No. 1 Roger Federer as the only two players to win at least one title on three different surfaces in 2007 (Houston – clay, Nottingham – grass, Stockholm – indoor hard-court).
He is also just one of six players (Juan Monaco, David Ferrer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer) to have won at least three ATP titles this season. |
