Singles Draw

mightyjeditribble - October 8, 2007 11:11 AM (GMT)
1. Djokovic
2. Gonzalez
3. Ljubicic
4. Gasquet (withdrawn, replaced with LL Haider-Maurer)
5. Caņas
6. Moya
7. Chela
8. Baghdatis

Djokovic - Chela
Ljubicic - Baghdatis
Moya - ? (possibly Nalbandian, who is unseeded :yikes:)
Gonzalez - Caņas

This one has quite a strong field, and an interesting one. Gonzo is at position number 7 in the race, but only 16 points ahead of number 13 Moya and 17 ahead of number 14 Ljubicic, so all of them need to get some points here if they want to increase their chances of making Shanghai. The no. 5,7 and 8 seeds probably don't have much chance to make Shanghai, but I think they are theoretically still in the running. I would like to see Baggy do well here; he has dropped out of the top 20 in the rankings and really belongs to be in there imo.

i'd like to see Moya do well here as to help him pip his way into Shanghai.

Singles - First Round

F Lopez (ESP) d W Eschauer (AUT) 63 62
[LL] T Zib (CZE) d F Mayer (GER) 61 64
M Fish (USA) d N Almagro (ESP) 67(4) 62 64
J Ferrero (ESP) d [5] [WC] G Canas (ARG) 36 63 76(5)
J Melzer (AUT) d [WC] A Peya (AUT) 64 63
J Benneteau (FRA) d [Q] I Minar (CZE) 64 62
[1] N Djokovic (SRB) d R Ginepri (USA) 63 64
[7] J Chela (ARG) d G Garcia-Lopez (ESP) 61 63
D Nalbandian (ARG) d [Q] S Galvani (ITA) 63 76(3)

A minor upset today with Canas going out against Ferrero. This deals another blow to the Argentine's slim hopes of still qualifying for Shanghai. The biggest upsets happened yesterday, with Moya falling to Koubek, and Baggy to Seppi :yikes: :( .

Nalbandian wins his first-round match against a qualifier. Can the donut-man emerge from his seedless quarter of the draw? Neither Wawrinka nor Lopez are easy opponents though, and Koubek took out Moya so must be in good form too. So we'll have to wait and see.

I hope Gonzo comes through from his half of the draw. He's really got a fairly tame quarter, with Ferrero the most dangerous opponent, so hopefully he will show us that (despite the poor DC performance) his slump is really over.

well done Moya :(

c'mon JCFerrero, do you still win tournaments??

Singles - Second Round

[2] F Gonzalez (CHI) d J Vanek (CZE) 63 64
J Ferrero (ESP) d J Benneteau (FRA) 76(2) 16 62
A Seppi (ITA) d R Haase (NED) 75 63
[3] I Ljubicic (CRO) d M Fish (USA) 67(4) 62 76(4)

Gonzo continues his resurgence to make the quarters. He will meet Ferrero next.

Ljubicic continues his unbeaten run in Vienna. Djoko will take care of him in the semis, I imagine - but neither of them are there yet.

vivahate - October 11, 2007 01:33 PM (GMT)
well done JCF

F Lopez (ESP) d S Koubek (AUT) 64 36 64
[1] N Djokovic (SRB) d [LL] T Zib (CZE) 64 64

Good result for Stan against the Donut-Loving Argentine, who has really fallen off the radar this year. :yikes:

The semifinal line-up is

Djokovic - Chela
Ljubicic - Seppi
Lopez - Wawrinka
Ferrero - Gonzalez.

vivahate - October 12, 2007 03:36 AM (GMT)
ferrero is capable of beating gonzalez and lopez to reach the final, but would probably lose rather handidly to djokovic.

and those are quarters, right MJT ;)

Singles - Quarterfinals

[1] N Djokovic (SRB) d [7] J Chela (ARG) 63 57 76(2) - Saved 2 M.P. :o
J Ferrero (ESP) d [2] F Gonzalez (CHI) 63 46 64 :(
A Seppi (ITA) d [3] I Ljubicic (CRO) 63 63 :o
S Wawrinka (SWI) d F Lopez (ESP) 67(8) 63 64 :clap

I looked at the livescores yesterday just at the exact moment when Djokovic was facing those two match points. Maybe he now really is, like Fed and Nadal, in a place where he is confident that he can get out of any situation?

and interesting little fact from the ATP website:

QUOTE
Djokovic now leads the ATP circuit with his 65-14 match record for the season; Nadal is in second place with a 62-11 record. The Serbian, who has already qualified for Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai, is also in third in the ATP circuit with five titles for the season; Nadal and Federer both have six.
