Title: Slippy Courts
Description: Anyone with theories on this??

petalp - July 1, 2006 06:08 PM (GMT)
I can't remember seeing so many players slipping on the courts this year..

The courts have been dry it seems.. Anyone know why they've been so slippy?

I can appreciate them being slippy late in the day, but have seen players falling over in the afternoon matches too..

Thoughts?

Anyone with any thoughts?? I haven't heard anyone discuss it much on TV, and yet I've seen players fall over in almost every match that I've seen..

Hey petalp :)

Perhaps they water the courts between matches? I heard one of the commentators say that this isn't the case, but I'm not so sure, especially in the searing heat

Hi ldf :)

It's strange isn't it?! Rafa and Murray both fell over on centre court yesterday, and I've seen a few other falls where the player was lucky they didn't twist their ankle or something. I think that Jelena fell quite awkwardly in her match with Venus, and players normally steady on their feet (such as Martina Hingis) also falling over.

I think that your explanation is a logical one. i reckon that they do it on the morning of each day's play. Otherwise, how do they stop cracks in the surface after a few baking days? The grass is cut shorter than it has been in the past apparently so the ground is more exposed to the heat. Maybe they have some underground irrigation thing going on too, as I haven't seen anyone explicitly watering the surface between matches.

Maybe it's one of life's mysteries and I'm just wittering on. :)

well the net areas have certainly seemed slippy, but that is the players own fault to for not getting to net enough... roflmao

Maybe not as much focus has gone into shoes, i dunno...

I thought it might have been the shoes? Seem to remember reading something about it
