Title: Agnes Szavay - A great player for the future

I wrote this in WTA world and I wanted to know what you guys think about her game and prospects here I think she will become one of the great players of the next 10 years.

"Since I saw her play the final of New Haven I was very impressed. What really impressed me was her serve and her temperment. He serve is magnificent. Her second serve is superb. Today she was hitting aces at 192kph which is 120mph and she hit at least 3second serve aces on the line. Plus she's 5 foot 7 so not tall by todays standards. She also loves to get to that net to finish the point.

But today when she 5 love up in the 1st set tiebreak against Jankovic and when she was 5-1 down in the second set, she still had the same expression so she has an excellent temperment for the big occassion. I can see her winning slam titles in the future. What do you think?

As for Jelena, I said before that her serve and her second serve in particular could prevent her from winning a slam title. I haven't changed my view. She seriously has to look at her serve or risk going backwards in the long run like Lena D."

Szavay, arguably the most exciting newcomer of WTA this year. And she's done it the hard way, through qualifiers, rather than being pampered by wildcards.

Her results speak for themselves. Most definitely an exciting prospect!

I guess that the lower half of the USO draw provided a nice little blueprint for the future top players in the women's game with the likes of Paszek, Agnieszka Radwanska, Szavay, Azarenka, all making their mark on the tournament.

She seems like a good potential.. although its early days... but she is showing a calm resilience pleasantly nice form a fresh up and coming player..especially against top 10 players...

As for Jelena... she should go and hide her face for a bit... This blasay attitude in finals you think she should win after doing all the hard work against lindsay... must be a serbian thing... come through a terrific semi final, play with your heart on your sleeve... and then come the final.... a mental letdown.. Then a gain Kutzy does that too sometimes so might just not be only a serbian thing... used to be a Kim Clijsters tradition at major tournaments... do all the hardwork as required, get there and then whatever gives...gives...

Certainly an exciting bunch of new players on the horizon...

Havent actually seen her play though I have been following all the rumbles and there really does seem to be quite a stir around her.I will be watching her quite closely from now on.

As for Jelena and that mild spin throw in second serve.im no pro but I have a better second serve than her.Its a serious impedement. But like the comparison to Elena D,she has the groundstrokes to back it up.

I think she does that ...cause she becomes tight and nervous on second serves.... The mild spin is probably more defensive and praying that it gets in at least so that her opponents have a tricky time returning. True, she does have some of the most average serve for a top 10 player , but I'm not too surprised, cause she tries to rely more on her other strengths including her groundstrokes, but Justine in particular makes all her weaknesses too glaring with her better techniques.

 but gosh..its much better than Elena though..... Elena :( fails on both first and second serves no matter what she tries... now that is certainly a mind over matter dilemma...

But you know... it is interesting, how you can get into the top 10 without a particularly strong serve in the WTA......as long as the rest of your game is up to scratch... but you need at least a deceptive if not sound second serve in the ATP or you will never reach the upper echeleons..

Which makes one yet again question just how "deep" the WTA is ;)

The most interesting thing about Szávay is that Hungary has very few facilities, there is no Hungarian LTA pouring money into the sport, or even much interest in tennis generally (this is changing rapidly now that Ági has hit the big time.) Court access is even harder for young people in Hungary than the UK, so it begs the question why the English are incapable of producing even a half decent female tennis player.

What impresses me about Ági is that she seems to have a winner's attitude, which is something that she's acquired from role models in other Hungarian sports.

Hey Nick  long time no see. hope ur good?
I think all of the European countries without even a smidgen of the budget the LTA have are putting us to shame.

I remember way back in 94, the argument then and promises about how funding was to be then used and how this would lead to the eventual emergence of a British top 10 girl. We had Clare Wood et al back than who was good enough to be in the top 100 so aiming for the top 10 sorta seemed possible.

13/14 years down the line... where are they? Still have positive talk but nothing else. The LTA would do well to go to somewhere like Serbia and find out exactly what they are doing and to find out the mentality of their young players and work out how that be transferred into our young players..

Because Hungary is a poorer country than the UK, the Hungarians feel that earning lots of money in tennis is a good way out of struggling to survive in a poor country. bit like the Russians.

Nick Cica - September 26, 2007 08:59 PM (GMT)
Yorkshire, there is absolutely no comparison between Hungary and Russia in terms of living standards. So much so that barely 14 thousand Hungarians have taken advantage of the new EU labour laws to work abroad (compare that to 300 thousand Poles.) The difference between Hungary and the UK is far less than you imagine.

Ágnes Szávay is suffering from a bad thigh muscle tear (worse than expected) and will be out for at least six weeks, if not more. Which is a shame given the momentum she has built up.

Here's a nice picture of her:
