Title: Everyone's favourite comedy/sitcom

Sam - September 21, 2007 09:19 AM (GMT)
What is yours? Mine is a bit of a three way tie between Keeping up appearance, Vicar of Dibley and Mr Bean! roflmao

Gav - September 21, 2007 10:43 AM (GMT)
My comedy tastes are slightly bizarre to say the least.

Peep Show is my favourite at the moment...

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, The Mighty Boosh, Extras, Nathan Barley, Saxondale and Nighty Night are up there too.

With Red Dwarf, Alan Partridge, Fawlty Towers, The Office and Blackadder being my pick of the older comedies.

EDIT:- After reading Trisco's list how could I forget Monty Python?!!?!?!?

Surely one of the most influential comedies of all time... isn't it.....??!?

Has to be Mighty Boosh, Nighty Night, Monty Python, The Royle Family and Will & Grace.. in no particular order.

petalp - September 21, 2007 12:19 PM (GMT)
Yes Minister
Yes Prime Minister
Blackadder
The Good Life (although it overran I think)
The Fast Show (in parts)
Whose Line Is It Anyway (the UK version!)

Trisco, I've heard from so many people that I would like the Might Boosh.. I shall have to check it out!!

Also liked what I saw of the Royle Family. Caroline Aherne is a genius!

Red Dwarf, definitely the best sci fi comedy, but saw very little of that too.

Dinky Jo - September 21, 2007 12:22 PM (GMT)
Blackadder
Red Dwarf (except series 7 and 8 - they ruined it  )
Scrubs
Spaced
Black Books

I like some of the early seasons of M*A*S*H too :)

scvangils - September 21, 2007 03:53 PM (GMT)
In no particular order:

Coupling
Newsradio (don't know how many people know this)
Scrubs
Monty Python
Frasier

GS2 - September 21, 2007 04:09 PM (GMT)
I have horribly trashy tastes in comedy so this list may be a bit embarrasing but in no particular order.

Seinfeld (the only credible one here really)
The Golden Girls
Allo Allo
The Brittas Empire
Friends

The Brittas Empire

How could I forget such a classic in my list?!?!?!?

Chris Barrie was fantastic in this.... and although he was at his best, for me, as Rimmer in Red Dwarf he is a close second as Gordon Brittass!

tbh, i really wasn't a fan of the Brittas Empire and was quite quite shocked when Barrie left red dwarf to go and concentrate on that  he was far far better in Red Dwarf i thought.....

Ahhh but it didn't stop him coming back in series 8 to at least make that series worth watching a bit more than series 7... it had lost its magic by then though really.

there were only 2 good episodes in series 7, and i really didn't care by series 8 - they'd ruined it :( series 5 will always be the best for me :D

Series 1-6 were just great. I actually remember watching the very first episode when it was on bbc2 way back in 1988... I was gobsmacked after the first episode. And then it was just a love affair until Kochansky replaced Rimmer and it all went downhill.... that bloody Kochansky!!!

yeah, the first Kochasnki was great, but i have no idea why they put the other one in  part of the story was it being 4 guys together, why stick a girl in there.....

the problem was that the writers had a big falling out after series 6 and it was just one writer after that. hence why it got shite.....

dl04 - September 21, 2007 05:36 PM (GMT)
No particular order:

Friends
The catherine Tate show
Scrubs
the vicar of dibley
Shameless( it's a kind of dramedy)

:D

The original Kochanski was Clare Grogan and she then starting VJ-ing for VH1 so they got someone else in to be the permanent Kochanski and it just didn't work....

....and dl... Shameless... definite comedy that one!!! :D :D

I was actually gonna add the Brittas Empire..

PP, if you look on Youtube for Mighty Boosh there are quite a few episodes on there... best comedy around in recent years along with Night Night. :ok:

The Boosh are fantastic. I met Julian and Noel after one of their gigs in Cambridge last year. Julian is very chilled out and thanks all his fans while Noel is a little bit full of himself but fair enough with the success they are getting. I post on the Mighty Boosh forum although it tends to be full of teenage angst and can get quite hairy!

Red Dwarf
Blackadder
Friends
Fawlty Towers
My Name Is Earl

I can watch these shows over and over and over!

Agree on the Red Dwarf thing though - I didnt like it when Rimmer went and stopped watching - series two was always my fave - You cant beat a bit of Tongue Tied!

Pebs - September 21, 2007 08:35 PM (GMT)
oo oo oo - I forgot to add - The Fresh Prince of Bel Air... Carltons dancing..... :giggle:

living tv show 2 episodes on sat anay morning on the hangover tv slot!!!

to have all 4 of the main cast to have such wonderful comic personalities and one liners is such an achievement

GS2 - September 24, 2007 03:59 PM (GMT)
I don't have Living :(

Great programme & great cast.

I have a queer guide to the Golden Girls which I bought in Sydney - apparently Doris Roberts (Everybody Loves Raymond) was originally offered the show but she was busy and couldn't do it.

And Betty White first auditioned for Blanche & Rue M for Rose as at that point in their careers Betty was known for playing the slut and Rue the innocent!

The first 5 series (before Laura & the original writers left) were absolute classics.

I have them on DVD & some of the episodes I can watch & watch. The one where they all get hypnotised by a stage hypnotist and the one where the drug tests show most of the staff are pregnant including Tim are just roflmao roflmao roflmao

its hard to imagine Betty White as a slut :o

Everyone loves Raymond is great also. I think any sitcom that wants to be a classic needs the strong matriarchal character. And i just remembered another i used to love-Married With Children

Fawlty Towers, Yes Minister.

The quality of writing was impeccable and neither ever 'jumped the shark'.

Pretty much all other comedy shows were more hit and miss (Monty Python, brilliant but missed by a mile some times) or went horribly off the boil. These two never did.

ps. Jump the Shark = go off the boil, from a moment in Happy Days when Fonz jumped a shark on waterskis. There is a whole website devoted to when shows have 'jumped the shark' http://www.jumptheshark.com/index.jspa

1960s/70s

Rising Damp - Leonard Rossiter was a comic genius.
Steptoe and Son - two comic genius
Open All Hours - Ronnie Barker
Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin - Leonard Rossiter again.

For nostaligia I also like quite a few of te ones that I'm not allowed to laugh at anymore cos it's politically incorrect apparently.

80s/90s

Absolutely Fabulous
Father Ted - just different, mad and acutally funny unlike most of the last 10 yrs. In fact i've howled at it all evening with the Elvis comp!
The Young Ones - what a bunch of anarchic nutters :D
Bottom - the 'smashing blouse" one is an all time fave :D
Vicar of Dibley - used to hate ti but I appreciate it now.
Red Dwarf of course.

'Allo, Allo" - it's like panto and I love Madame Edith's singing and the camp German officer :D Anyone who can make a comedy out of the Nazi occupation of France is a genius.

And having seen Liam's suggestions I like
Keeping Up Appearances and One Foot in the Grave very much :D

Modern

Very few. Tthey are all rip offs of whtever else came before them and I see noting to get excited about, too much repetition and useless sketch shows like Little Britain. However, one guy stand sout and that is

Peter Kaye - Pheonix Nights

Pure genius    Although I think you need to be from outside the South to get the humour.

In our house, we watch more cartoosn these days as they are funnier, Simpsons, Family Guy. Farscape :D

American Sitcoms - not many!

Cheers - the stupid bar tender was great :D The episode with the baseball player's trousers! :D
Frasier -until it went up it's own ass, best one is where they take an evening class in mechanics. :D

If anyone can tell me any good new stuff I'd be grateful, but please no My Family, Will and Grace (yuck, yuck, yuck!), or repetative sketch shows with te saem character doing th esame thing every week. I did watch Mighty bosh te other day as I heard Trisco on about it , it was amusing but not lol, it's funny if you are into music tho! :D

If forced to pick my top 3 of all time it is

Rising Damp
Steptoe and Son
Absolutely Fabulous

I guess my tastes must also be bizarre Gav! I can't believe nobody else has mentioned The Office. Classic. I even like the US version. The League of Gentlemen is also superb (first two series esp.) and I am currently enjoying the IT Crowd.
Strange how most nationalities are very proud when it comes to their food, sport, etc but almost everywhere I go, people seem to agree that British comedy is the best. B)

Oh bugger I forgot Blackadder. :o The 80s was definitely a golden age with it's alternative stuff. Hard to top that now.

Btw I like Alan Patridge too :D

I do like the Office but it's nto in my all time greats. I coudl tno watch it over and over, it's more of a concept that works in smaller doses but I do love the staff appraisal and the staff quiz! :D

I find aspects of 3 Non Blondes funny, but cos it is a sketch show I get a bit sick of the repetition of the characters like I do with the other skethc shows. I feel I onyl need to watch them once and then I've had the joke if you know what I mean.

You are right re: soaps. I don't watch Corrie now, but I've spent lots fo time laughing at soaps. :D Eastenders cracks me up. Brookie used to have some good humour. In Corrie I used to like the Duckworths and the Ogdens, Bet Lynch and Eddie Yates! :D

I didn't like Shooting Stars and their Randall And Hopkirk was dissapointing, but Big Night Out (oh the memories), The Smell Of Reeves and Mortimer (surely their best work), Bang Bang and Catterick are some of the most definitive comedy works for me...

And also I managed to forget the people that made me laugh through the early 80's... the Trotters!
