| 1999 Cincinnati final Sampras v Rafter http://www.youtube.com/results?search_quer...l&search=Search This is the match where the ball goes right through Rafter's racquet and makes a hole off a Sampras serve! injuring Rafter's shoulder in the process because of the impact. |

Wow, Sampras playing with all the flair and excitement of an first wave automaton. The only indication that Pistol Pete is not some kind of man made engineering project is his tongue hanging relentlessly from his dumb, word bound mouth. No human worth their salt would ever design something so aesthetically grotesque as Pete Sampras. The concept of Sampras as designer hero may be plausible but never realised in actuality. What Rafter accurately represents is the triumph beauty over the brute force, in terms of integrity, modesty and aesthetics. There is no ghost in the Sampras machine, only an excuse for something that is always in the process of becoming and never being. |
