I'M GOING TO WIMBLEDON!!

sorry people, that's the only thought i can voice and i can't help smiling when i do it.

very poor decision imo not to sell grounds passes to henman hill btw. even though it'll lprobably ash rain, this is the last time henman will be on the court and the hill should be creaking under the multitudes.

These ties are very uneven, aren't they?

Serbia v Australia is a killer; either of these teams would have easily gone through against most of the others. I would give the edge to Serbia, but you've got to feel sorry for the Aussies.

Czech republic v Switzerland is a similar contest. The main thing the Swiss have going for them is, of course, Roger. The czech team is very strong though --- unless Stan can pull off a singles win, or Roger loses one of his singles, it might all come down to the doubles. Damm is a great doubles player, so it'll be tough for the Swiss.

GB v Croatia is the third of the more interesting ties. It looks very close, although a lot might depend on the weather --- if things get moved indoors, that might spell doom for the GB side.

The remaining match-ups all look much less exciting.

Chile has a strong team and should have no trouble against Israel, although Erlich/Ram are likely to take the doubles point and keep it going live into Sunday.

I'll give Austria a slight edge over Brazil, Belarus over Peru, Romania over Japan, and Korea over the Slovaks. Whoever wins of these teams, though, will almost certainly find themselves in relegation again this time next year.

I think MurrayMint is suggesting that if it gets moved indoors it could all be a bit of a disaster  I think they;re worried that Ljubicic will fare better indoors on hard courts than he will on grass......

I think it's time to start on the sundance......

Agreed re: henman hill. I hope they can avoid the rain.

Well, Ljubicic tends to be pretty good indoors, doesn't he ...

Do you reckon it's possible that they would have Friday indoors, but move back out to Wimbers when the weather gets better? I'm not sure that would be a good idea for player's health though.

Murray fears Davis Cup wash-out

Andy Murray fears a forecast of wet weather may give Croatia an advantage in the Davis Cup World Group play-off at Wimbledon, which starts on Friday.

The Scot will anchor Britain for the grass test but rain may mean the tie is moved to Roehampton's indoor courts.

"It would definitely be a disadvantage if we had to move indoors," Murray, 20, told The Independent.

"They are big guys who hit the ball well and Ivan Ljubicic is amongst the best hard-court players in the world."

Britain chose to host the Davis Cup tie on Wimbledon's Number One Court in order to favour their singles players Murray and Tim Henman, both of whom are comfortable on grass.

Croatia are without their more experienced grass-court players Mario Ancic and Ivo Karlovic.

Ljubicic, the world number 12, has not got beyond the third round at Wimbledon but Marin Cilic, who is ranked 117th, has hit form recently, upsetting top seed Nikolay Davydenko in Beijing last week.

Murray has been practising outdoors on hard courts since his US Open exit, which could help if wet weather leads to the Davis Cup played at the National Tennis Centre.

The British number one said: "It would be really tough to beat Ljubicic if we had to move indoors.

"But I've been practising hard and trying to improve my net game a lot."

Murray had previously said that he may have to restrict his participation in order to protect himself after missing several months with a wrist problem.

"It's not that I don't want to play in the Davis Cup. I love it but I'm hurting myself playing it," said the Scot.

"There's no chance I'm going to play the week after Davis Cup, like I did last year, that was stupid.

"I don't think it's about playing for yourself, it's about doing what is right for your body. It's hard on you."

Murray added he is determined to force his way back into the world's top 10 after his return from injury. He is currently ranked 19th.

"I was in the top 10 in the world and number four in this year's ATP Tour Race when I hurt myself so it was hard," he stated.

"But next year I'll be trying to get myself back up there again."

yeah, thinking about it, he almost always plays the final tie - makes sure they don't get relegated from the world group

Davis Cup results

Serbia-Australia: 1-1
Djokovic won the opening match in straight sets, while Hewitt had to fight against Tipsarevic but came through in five to level the tie.

Austra-Brazil 2-0
Austria has a commanding lead, after both Melzer and Koubek win in straight sets.

Israel-Chile 2-1
After Massu lost his opening match on Thursday, and Erlich/Ram prevailed in a doubles epic, Chile is in trouble and needs to win both singles on Sunday to take the tie.

Britain-Croatia 2-0
The absence of Ivan Ljubicic due to a urinary tract infection has dealt another blow to the 2005 champions. Andy Murray came through in a tense 5-setter against youngster Cilic, while Tim Henman won what may be his final singles match in straight sets. :yahoo:

Switzerland-Czech republic 1-1
Roger Federer won the opener, as expected, although he did drop the third set against Stepanek despite having match points. Berdych then defeated Wawrinka in three tight sets. Doubles tomorrow are going to be crucial.

Japan-Romania 1-1
Veterans Suzuki and Pavel each take a point for their respective countries.

Slovakia-Korea 1-1
Hyungtaik Lee started with a commanding 6-3 6-0 6-1 before, in the match Lacko versus Jun (who?), the Slovak won in three sets and drew the tie level.

Peru-Belarus 1-0
Mirnyi lost in a shock defeat against Miranda. The second singles match is still due to be played.

mightyjeditribble - September 23, 2007 08:23 PM (GMT)
DC results day 3

Serbia v Australia 4-1
Being 2-1 down, and with Hewitt out, there was never much chance for the Aussies, and they have to make place in the world group for Serbia.

Austria v Brazil 4-1
The Austrians were already through after Saturday. Sa at least pulled one point back for the Brazilians by winning the final rubber.

Peru v Belarus 3-1
This tie is still going on, but at 3-1 the Peruvians are already through after Horna defeated Max Mirnyi.

Israel v Chile 3-2
Israel are the unlikely winners in this tie, after Gonzo's bad form continues and he goes out against Sela in five sets. :o

Britain v Croatia 4-1
Henman already brought the Brits through on Saturday, and Andy Murray made it 4-0, before Jamie Baker concedes Britain's only point in the final dead rubber against Cilic.

Czech republic v Switzerland 3-2
After Roger and Yves lost in the doubles yesterday, it was always going to be tough for the Swiss team. Roger produced one of those performances we have seen a few of recently, being in trouble in both of the first two sets but coming through on the big points to still win in straight sets. However, Stepanek was too strong for Wawrinka, and the world #1's team is now out of the world group. :o

Japan v Romania 2-3
Romania complete a comeback from 2-1 down to deny Japan a place in the world group.

Slovakia v Korea 2-3
Hyungtaik Lee is Korea's hero, as he single-handedly takes Korea into the world group.

----

So Korea, Romania, the Czech republic, Britain, Peru, Austria and Serbia make their way into the world group.
