Kuzzy has retired due to a stomach pull or something, so Momo and Linds have a great chance, both having won their opening matches with great ease (Linds back to her bagelling ways  )
vivahate - September 19, 2007 12:43 PM (GMT)
and Martina is out of the China Open :( girl, pack your bags and call it a season. go horseback riding or something
dl04 - September 19, 2007 03:38 PM (GMT)
Linds just back in the groove now, just superb how she's found such good form so quickly :D
I hope for another good run for Linds :yahoo:

Davenport through against Danilidou 7-5 6-3
Dementieva beats Paszek easier than i expected, 6-2 6-0
and they will face each other in the 1/4s :yahoo:
Davenport leads the h2h 10-5, but most of the losses came on clay (surprise  ) or carpet so Linds should come through this
Manzikert - September 21, 2007 06:33 AM (GMT)
Well, Dementieva took some decisive vengeance for Wimbledon against Paszek, but the satisfaction had to be short-lived as she goes out tamely in the end to Davenport 7-6(1), 6-1. She actually served for the first set 6-5 (and led 3-1 for a quick start) but got broken to 15 and only won one point in the tiebreaker that followed. That set the tone from there - she did have a slight opening in the second set to recoup one of two breaks, holding triple break point at 1-4, but instead only won one more point in the match and ended things with a double fault. Not a pretty conclusion, especially for such a competitive first set, but the Russian can take consolation that other big names have already fallen victim to the Davenport comeback.
Speaking of which, Jankovic should get past Morigami to set up an enticing rematch only a week removed from her loss to the American champ. With luck she won't lose her head over line calls this time. Her occasional tendency to do so is shaping up to be one of her less edifying traits, and I say this as one of her admirers.
To be honest I was initially underwhelmed with Davenport's quixotic decision to return (especially after sounding so relieved to have 'retired' and nixing even the faintest suggestion of a return to the tour as recently as Indian Wells) but it looks like she knows what she's doing. You can almost see her qualify for the YEC at this rate. B)

Well at this rate that she is going with this free hitting enjoyment of her game she might as well qualify for the YEC.Her comeback at 31 with child is amazing. Its not in the same league as Corina but Im in total awe of her more now than ever.I hope she stays fit and cements her stake in that top 10 and beat down the young guns.I was always a fan of Lindsay!
The Dav - September 21, 2007 12:16 PM (GMT)
Lindsay beat Elena 76(1) 61  She's 8-0 this year :o
Jankovic again tomorrow, and probably Mauresmo in the final, all this for a tier II  roflmao
trisco - September 21, 2007 12:19 PM (GMT)
She really is back then. Hope she does win this tournament too.
Can't believe how good she is on her return and the players she is beating :o
Well done Lindsay..

Amelie, her game is just so ineffectual on a slow hardcourt i feel, just lacks any weight of shot, particulary on that forehand. Peng rightfully so just punching through the loopy balls that Amelie presented for her. Peng looks to be in great form again beating Hingis then Momo. She's such a superb shotmaker :D
Lindsay through :D :yahoo: :yahoo:
Dementieva is easy meat for Lindsay outside of the Slams and it proved the same here. As i said the other day, the way Lindsay is back into the groove so quickly is astonishing. She really is an absolute legend for this comeback
Good to see Szavay doing so well too :)

How on earth did JJ manage to lose the final? :yikes:
7-6 and 5-1 up... :chainsaw:
dl04 - September 23, 2007 03:20 PM (GMT)
JJ   :crazy1:
She's an absolute nut-job at times
Agnes though :D Such a super-talent. Her movement and ball-striking are immense and at times she was flooring Jankovic with the pace and depth of that backhand. It's a superb shot technically. Tremendous mental strength on display too :ok:
Federer-Williams - September 23, 2007 03:22 PM (GMT)
 Agnes will surely be in the top 10 this time next year.
Bad choke from Jelena though Agnes was 5-0 up in the first set TB.
Second serve ace on MP down? Although her game isn't that similar her fighting instincts remind me of Serena.
Manzikert - September 23, 2007 07:54 PM (GMT)
Silly Jelena. The title would have inched her into the No 2 spot past Kuznetsova, who will simultaneously lose the entirety of her title points from last year (on top of not being able to defend her Bali title last week owing to Fed Cup). Instead she will fall just short.
It will undoubtedly happen before long anyhow - she holds a big lead on the No 2 spot in the race - and Kuznetsova is nursing injury now with still a couple of more semi finishes left to defend (including Tier I Zurich) whilst Jankovic will gain YEC bonus points herself come Madrid; to be honest I'd prefer to see Kuznetsova, who has a proven Grand Slam record with a title and two finals reached, hang onto the No 2 spot for a while instead of the relatively unproven, volatile Serb.
Jankovic has held match points in three important losses this year that I recall - against Clijsters in the Sydney final, against Ivanovic in the LA semi, and now against Szavay (4-1 and 5-1 leads against the latter two). She seems to have trouble maintaining focus when she builds a sizeable lead, as if she gets complacent - I know she's done it against Henin several times (4-1 in both sets of the Toronto final, 4-0 in the third set in Berlin, USO semi) although it's excusable against such a top player, but it's been cropping up against other opponents as well lately. At least I can be glad it was against the steely Szavay, whose composure and playing style have really made me sit up and take notice since New Haven - I believe she replaces Bammer in the Top 20 when the new rankings come out. A tough break for the Austrian veteran, who has been such a solid performer all year only to have her hard work abruptly undone by this teenaged upstart. :P Well done to the up-and-coming Hungarian.
