Title: Anita Roddick

Lex - September 10, 2007 09:34 PM (GMT)
I've just heard that Anita Roddick, founder of the Body Shop has died aged 64.

I remember Anita running the first Body Shop in the Lanes in Brighton in the 1970's, it was a small stall-like shop perhaps 40 feet by 10 feet. From that she built an empire

She championed ethical and environmental causes ages before it was trendy. She was a true entrepreneur.

Anita, you'll be missed

I was lucky enough attend 2 talks given by Anita and to meet her twice.

It was clear from these were that she was a strong, passionate woman, with such positive energy. She was also dynamic, charismatic, warm, compassionate, and extremely intelligent (EQ and IQ). She also had a wonderful, sharp sense of humour.

She has been and will remain a huge inspiration to me (and no doubt many others) in showing how business could and should be carried out, and for her beliefs overall. A truly remarkable person.

Do you know the first Body Shop only had 20 products on sale...so they put them in several different sized bottles before placing on the shelves, otherwise they wouldn't have filled a shelf let alone the small shop! From little acorns and all that.....

Poor Anita, so young too :(

It is amazing when you think how ahead of her time she was. Those products with all the natural ingredients and plain looking packaging are everywhere now and seemd such a novelty at the time. Shame is though that a lot of companies making them sell them as pure and natural when they are not, they contain all the other chemical rubbish that is used in toiletries, and they contain a slight extract of the natral ingredient. Also many are tested on animals and they are also not environemtally sound or ethically produced. Sadly the BS is now owned by L'Oreal of "becuase you're worth it" fame who are hardly renowned for pure and ethical products.

I like the philosphy, but i never liked the products though. Remeber all those 18 yr olds sprayign on that dreadful Dewberry scent? :D I did used ot quite like honey water toner but that wa sit for me. Sadly at the time I found them expensive and not very useful. Greet ideas though. I used to buy other non animal tested and natural lines where I could get them. Anyway you cannot beat Dead Sea salt products, direct form Israel, but they are hardly cheap.
