Title: Ai defeats Martina, 7-5 3-6 6-4

:o
Martina's serve really let her down today..her first serve average speed was only 92mph, and her second serve was down at 81mph. Ai took full advantage of this, stepping in on the returns and taking control of the points. I was very impressed with Ai's backhand, particularly down the line.

Hingis's serve was really frail yesterday, and it just shows how attackable it is on this surface. Ai knew that and just went for that backhand down the line relentlessly and drew Hingis into errors due to her formidable defence. In essence both girls were kind of playing themselves really, essentially conter-punchers who like to draw out the errors. On this occasion however, martina blinked first, in her earliest gS defeat since losing to pasqual in the first round here 5 years ago.

In the 3rd set, Ai showed once more what a fierce fighter she is.
She could easily make it to the quarters, just like in 2004. Her biggest threat would be Elena Dementieva, but she is no grasscourt expert.
GAMBARE AI!

BTW, LDF, is it done on purpose that Lindsay has a white moustache on your avatar? :yikes:
