Title: Nadal at no. 2

Federer-Williams - September 10, 2007 12:58 PM (GMT)
People were worried Fed might lose his no.1 position again but he is still 2000+ points ahead of Nadal and normality has returned.

But Nadal might be the one under threat for his no.2 position by Novak. He is just a bit over 1000 points ahead of Djoko with Djoko having relatively few fall points to defend as well as nothing at YEC and 4r at Australian. Plus injury always seems a threat for Nadal.

Thoughts?

Djoko has to remain healthy as well and he will have to cope with the pressure of being a top player. Nadal has done incredibly well in the last department. It's difficult for a hunter when he becomes the prey.

The relevant thing to look at for the year-end ranking is the "ATP race points". Novak is still 210 points behind Nadal, while Fed is only ca. 160 points ahead of Rafa. A masters series win gives 100 points; Shanghai at most 150. It seems to me that it will be virtually impossible for Novak to catch up with Nadal, unless Rafa doesn't play anything until the end of the year. (And even then, Novak would have to do well in all three remaining big events.)

I agree that it will be a big feat for Djokovic to reach No. 2 at year-end. Nadal will have to have another stellar claycourt season to hold onto the No. 2 spot next year, though.

I like the way pressure shifts from Nadal and Federer back and forth. Last year after the FO, Nadal kept all his previous year entry point and the pressure was on Fed to deliver in Wimby, USO and AO. Once done the pressure shifted back to Nadal who again manged a gret clay season and Wimbledon. And then obviously ressure back to Fedwho did a great job to save of all last summer points even having a TMS final extra. After the the Masters and the AO...it will be Nadal's turn to feel the heat. Djoko might help ease all this by getting his share of the cake as well.

Yes it's nice we don't have to focus just on Federer all year.

But say Novak were to take a SF in Madrid, a Final in Paris masters and YEC and a SF at the Australian. Wouldn't that take him close to Nadal if Nadal kept similar results?
