Description: What do they do now?

Federer-Williams - September 10, 2007 12:55 PM (GMT)
Venus knows she should be at the top of the rankings and she is headed that way. If she plays in the fall and hopefully the YE (she hasn't played it much) and Aussie Open I feel that she can get to number 2 again especially with a low RG score to defend. Hopefully she rests up and she is going in the right direction and loads of points to gain.

Serena on the other hand is in much bigger problems. I don't have as much confidence she will play in the fall and she needs to be in even better shape. She has changed her game and it doesn't work against Henin. Whilst Venus has no points to defend Serena has nearly played a full year and is still number 7 . And this is considering she has to defend AO+miami when 2008 starts. :s.

What does she do?

As for either reaching number one again Miss Henin has proved that she is so consistent with results and plays more often. I think it will take one of them to win 3/4 slams plus a few tier 1's and more. Both need to step up to that but Venus atleast is alot nearer.

Also Henin has 5400 points WITHOUT the AO that is amazing. I think it would take both of WS to get on a roll to knock Henin off no.1.

Well Venus should keep up her good form post Wimbledon, play some indoor events, the YEC (if she qualifies which I expect she will) and the Australian then she'll probably be number 2 behind Justine. Then I guess we'll see whether she is committted enough to knock Henin off her perch.

As for Serena well...she needs to stop making excuses and hope that Justine is in the other half of the draw in slams...if she had played a fuller schedule this year she would be ranked higher (and wouldn't have drawn Justine in so many QFs), but I doubt she or her sister will ever play a "full" year. I guess she needs to get back that fire in her belly that sees her win matches even when she doesn't look like she deserves to

It's all about motivation, and I reckon Venus has it.As Apollo Creed once said"Look into their eyes Stallion, eye of the tiger baby, eye of the tiger."

Serena has lost it for me.Making all sorts of excuses for losing instead of taking responsibility for her own perfomances.Calling the world No1 lucky really shows her in deep denial.
Venus on the other hand has showed she's up to the fight, but they have to play a heavier calendar to really get match and mentally tough.
Both sisters are still top 3 material, and I don't care how much the Serbians have improved,as the Williams girls in full flight are much too powerful for the large majority of the top girls.
Henin deserves her time as No1 and it's going to take something special to remove her.Can either of the Williams girls do it?Not so sure.

Serena should, as many posters have said, lose some weight-the extra pounds mean it's also more likely she'll get injured too.

Venus is doing ok, but should play more-both should take smaller tournaments more seriously.

I don't know what they should do but most people seem to think that if only both of them were fully fit, applied themselves more, played more tournies, rediscoverd the desire,.etc etc that they will be back at the very top. I'm not sure this is a realistic expectation, and a bti nostalgic too - they can't go back to 2002 or whenever they were at their peak. Things change, they change, it gets harder as you get older and the competition increases. Fitenss isn;t just about training and weight though, real injuries and health issues will affect the number of hours they can train for and play on court for. Some people might overcome this, but others will not and may have to change their game to compensate which might make them less effective. And you can;t just discover new desire and motivation, if it were that easy we'd all be hugely successful and counsellors would not make any money.
