Well done to roger for winning his 12th slam title last night, despite a very spirited challenge from Novak Djokovic. He is a true great, if only he could add the French title he will definitely be the greatest player of all time :)

Well, what if he wins 15 slams and not the Frecnh? I think he will be the greatest whether he wins the french or not! Has been to the finals of the slams 10 times in a row!! With Nadal having injury problems, who knows, he may well tie with Sampras next May!

Well obviusly 14 is the big number but I heard Jon Wertheim (spl?) say last year that if Fed was to dominate another season like he did in 2006, he would consider Fed the greatest. Fed just did that. The number of slams is one thing, some may consider Borg or Laver greater than Sampras for other reasons (FO/Wim doubles, GSs etc...). Personnaly I think doing what Fed has done so far is simply good enough. Being head and shoulders above the rest at a the top for 4 years in 2007 is simply amazing plus the other tons of record that clearly won't be broken again.

He doesnt have to win the French to be considered the GOAT IMO. He's been in two finals and won a set against probably the best ever on clay. Thats a very good result , not a failing .

I agree. It's very hard to do a GS in the modern era in the mens game and has been for some time. Plus in recent years, winners of the FO seem to have failed to stamp their authority over other surfaces to the same effect and/or the top players. Fed however has been winning GSs more than anyoen else on everything but clay, he's been number one for ages and is virtually peerless. He'll carry on with this success for some time yet and may even win on clay. Nadal is his current main rival on clay and as people have said on here many times, has a game play style that is so phsycially intense that it is not compatible with longevity and a consistent level of fitness/injury free periods. That could open things up for Roger and others. I think the idea of having to win on all four surfaces will become less important in the future and other ways of measuring greatness will be more respected.

If you consider Sampras to be the GOAT (I know many don't), then to replace him logically Federer would have to better his achievements.

Federer has bettered Sampras' record at the French, and surely if/when Federer beats Sampras' 14 grand slams, would that make Federer the GOAT (or at least above Sampras)?

Whether he will ever be considered the greatest of all time or not, one thing is true, Federer will surpass Sampras's grand slam record.
