Title: Day 8 - Monday 3rd September

mightyjeditribble - September 3, 2007 09:10 AM (GMT)
There only seem to be two really interesting match-ups in the fourth round: Roddick-Berdych and Blake-Haas.

Both of these are very close to call imo. I think I would like to see Berdych win, but I have a feeling that Roddick may take this one fairly convincingly.

Similarly with Blake-Haas --- I like James, but I would love for Tommy to have another good slam run here. Blake leads in the h2h, but Tommy won their last meeting. However, on current fom I would realistically expect the American to prevail.

The lower half of the draw has become rather uninteresting until the semi-finals. The Gulbis-Moya and Wawrinka-Chela matches have a certain intrigue, but they seem somewhat inconsequential. Nonetheless, I would like to see Stan do well. A slam QF would be fantastic, and didn't he beat Chela last year at the USO? However, this may be one step too far for him this year.

Roddick-Berdych is on at (or not before) 5.30 (British time), followed by Haas-Blake. Federer-Lopez isn't on until late at night; I'll have to miss that one as I'll be leaving for a conference early tomorrow, which sadly means I will most likely also miss all the QF matches.

Finally, Davydenko v Lee isn't on before 9 pm, but it's not a match-up that really excites me anyway. Not the organizers either, it seems, seeing as though it's put on at Armstrong, while the other three matches are on Arthur Ashe ...

Scotsguy - September 3, 2007 01:18 PM (GMT)
'Federer committed only 11 unforced errors in the match, and was flawless in the second and third sets, playing error-free. Roger’s errorless streak lasted 105 points, stretching from the first set tiebreaker to early in the fourth set.'

I only just saw this, it's from the Fed-Isner match. That is an impressive stat, no?

scolios - September 3, 2007 01:22 PM (GMT)
Almost unprecedented for Fed, I'd have thought :D It was well worth watching :ok:

vivahate - September 3, 2007 02:03 PM (GMT)
that guy Fed is good. watch out for him ;)

MrInvisible - September 3, 2007 03:39 PM (GMT)
Berdych v Roddick - yes, Berdych is capable of beating Roddick, but I'd like to go for the form book on this one, and the fact that Roddick has that fired-up look in his eyes - in dangerous form (well, until he plays Federer anyway)

Federer v Lopez - I think this will be a good match actually - don't know if Fed has played Lopez recently, but I remember Fed having to work real hard to beat him in 3 tie-break sets back in 2003 when he won Wimbledon the first time. Lopez may even take a set, but its more likely to be 3 tight sets for Federer.

Davydenko v Lee - Yep, this will be a match too far for Lee - he's had a great tournament, but Davydenko will be merciless here, probably winning something like 6-4 6-3 6-2.

Gulbis v Moya - The match we all predicted would happen, eh? Good win for Moya over Kohlschreiber, but I think the Spaniard, at his age, takes longer to recover from 5 setters than before. The Latvian youngster probably through in 4 sets here.

Chela v Wawrinka - I didn't expect Chela to beat Ljubicic, but then again, he's surprisingly crap on clay and surprisingly good on hardcourts these days. Another 5 setter on the cards, and I reckon Chela will get it.

Blake v Haas - There'll be some good tennis here, but I have a feeling that it will be more one-sided than anticipated. I want Haas to win it, as he can push Federer more. But, Blake is a bit sharper at moment, so I reckon he'll win it in 4 sets.

Overall though, I think there'll be some interesting tennis to be played this evening, despite the match line-up initially not looking so amazing.

Roddick vs Berdych about to start

COME ON A-ROD!!!

Scotsguy - September 3, 2007 04:45 PM (GMT)
Roddick breaks immediately, thanks to a DF from Berdych...

mightyjeditribble - September 3, 2007 05:06 PM (GMT)
3-3 on serve in the first.

Scotsguy - September 3, 2007 05:12 PM (GMT)
:o :o :o Berdych breaks again :( :( :(

Scotsguy - September 3, 2007 05:15 PM (GMT)
Roddick breaks back to love :yahoo: :yahoo:

4 breaks surprisingly in a battle of big servers....

SuperBRAT - September 3, 2007 05:27 PM (GMT)
Is it a good match then?

Is it a good match then?

It's been an alright contest so far, neither player has really found their range yet and there are a few worries about Berdych's physical condition or whether it's a mental thing.

Worth watching I think though.

Scotsguy - September 3, 2007 05:31 PM (GMT)
Berdych serves with a 6-5 advantage in the tiebreak.

3 appalling forehand errors later and the set is Andy's

That was an escape :phew:

Scotsguy - September 3, 2007 05:38 PM (GMT)
The stats suggest Roddick eased to that set.

He leads winners 24-14, Aces 10-2 and Berdych has 16 errors compared to 12 from Roddick.....

And yet it was 8-6 in the tiebreak

Scotsguy - September 3, 2007 05:43 PM (GMT)
Berdych retires

He didn't look completely well, and now he looks gutted.........

So Roddick gets his second retirement of the week but is through to the QFs :D

A bit Like Mauresmo in the Aus Open 2006 - let's hope he does not go all the way with retirements

Indeed, but lets hope he does go all the way :)

Tenez - September 3, 2007 06:19 PM (GMT)
I can see avydenko reaching the semi final here. I think he is the most dangerous player for Fed in the top draw.

They played only recently in Cincy, didn't they? I find it hard to see Davydenko going through here, though this is a good a stage as any to reverse that head-to-head I guess ...

In any case, that match-up hasn't happened yet. It may still be Haas v Lee in the quarterfinals ...

Excellent B)

i'd like to read the book that James Blake wrote. Am wondering if anyone else has read it yet?

mightyjeditribble - September 3, 2007 07:16 PM (GMT)
I thought Blake would probably take this one ... and it looks like he's in control, at a set and a break up. Sad for Tommy though ... but happy for James, so it's OK. I would like to see him make the semis here. (And if for some reason Roger isn't there :yikes: , I could even see him win the title ...)

Scotsguy - September 3, 2007 07:16 PM (GMT)
Come on Tommy, lets pick things up a bit!

He must've heard you ... he's back on serve, and now has two break points.

mightyjeditribble - September 3, 2007 07:29 PM (GMT)
Tommy breaks.

mightyjeditribble - September 3, 2007 07:32 PM (GMT)
Quality of the match looks pretty good.

Tommy consolidates for 5-2. Looks like it's going to be even stevens going into the third.

Scotsguy - September 3, 2007 07:42 PM (GMT)
Blake breaks back, it's now only 5-4 to the German...ooooh dramatic...

mightyjeditribble - September 3, 2007 07:43 PM (GMT)
Very good fightback from Blake, who has to save a set point on his own serve, before fighting to break Haas back --- even though Tommy does give it up with a double fault. :(

But the penultimate point in that game was fantastic from Blake.

mightyjeditribble - September 3, 2007 07:44 PM (GMT)
Now, the "old" James Blake, after having fought back to being on serve, would have probably given up his next service game to hand the set to Haas after all.

What will the "new" James Blake do, I wonder?

Scotsguy - September 3, 2007 07:46 PM (GMT)
The exact same it would appear....

Set to Haas

To be honest, both players have been playing very well though from what I've seen --- we've got a contest!

Scotsguy - September 3, 2007 07:56 PM (GMT)
And now Blake breaks, twists and turns nearing double figures already...

Scotsguy - September 3, 2007 08:18 PM (GMT)
Blake breask Haas for the second time to take the set 6-3.
