Title: Rafa playing unwise?

scvangils - September 3, 2007 07:05 AM (GMT)
Does anyone else find it very unwise that Nadal is playing the US Open despite still having trouble with his knees? I have a feeling that someone as young as Nadal shouldn't be taking these kind of risks with respect to his career. Playing on a clay court is one thing, but playing on a hard court certainly isn't going to improve matters.

It certainly doesn't seem sensible - especially as he's said that if this were any other tournament he'd have withdrawn. You have to hope he doesn't do himself any serious injury. This is what he said after the match yesterday:

QUOTE
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I start with some doubts in the beginning. Yesterday I have pain. When I go to practice I stop practice for the knee. Yesterday I didn't take any anti inflammatories yesterday because I can't every day. But today morning I put some anti inflammatories. Yesterday I work hard. I think it's typical after the match. It was the first match when I really push hard. I play hard and, well, the next day it's tough. But today when I go to practice I feel better, not 100%, but better. When I go on court I start with a little bit pain, but after go out, no? The knee was a little bit more warm. Easier.

From a fan's point of view, you've gotta wonder how good he would play in a final if he's in pain  Having said that he said he's in pain but he didn't seem to have any problems seeing off Tsonga yesterday. Like I said, you just hope that he doesn't end up seriously damaging his knees because he was determined to play :(

It actually shows how strong his determination and fighting spirit is...
I reason...its all down to the race points.... Federer seems to always mention it as one of his goals this year, to finish as number one, though he is behind nadal at the moment. I doubt it if Nadal isn't keenly aware of this, because this is probably one of his best chances to become world bumber one. And for Nadal, he'll probably leave himself wasted on the court to achieve that. you've got to admire his fighting spirit.. :)

I guess his fighting spirit is as strong as the body allows it to be.
But one thing is for sure; the laser treatment (3 times a day) seems to be extremely effective. Rafa didn't hold back a single point against Tsonga.
Really vintage Nadal stuff; a close first set followed by a demonstation of demoralization.
Anyway good news for the tournament, we've already seen some epic fights but with the exclusion of a possible Hew-Djo meeting, i'm glad the "dream" semi Djo-Nad is still in the bag. Medics; get a front row seat; you'll be needed in this one
