Title: US Open 1 September - Day 6

vivahate - September 1, 2007 03:19 PM (GMT)
Nicole Vaidisova (CZE)[13] v. Shahar Peer (ISR)[18]
Martina Hingis (SUI)[16] v. Victoria Azarenka (BLR)
Anabel Medina Garrigues (ESP)[31] v. Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS)[4]
Nadia Petrova (RUS)[7] v. Agnes Szavay (HUN)
Tamira Paszek (AUT) v. Patty Schnyder (SUI)[11]
Agnieszka Radwanska (POL)[30] v. Maria Sharapova (RUS)[2]
Maria Kirilenko (RUS)v. Julia Vakulenko (UKR)
Anna Chakvetadze (RUS)[6] v. Sania Mirza (IND)[26]

okay kids, who'd like to spot the upset from the above list?? i like the young hungarian's chances against Petrova.

c'mon Martina

Congratulations to Agnieszka Radwanska for equalling the achievements of Sharpie's last 2 opponents by winning the first game in the match..

If she wins another game then will there be some 'Yuri Fury' I wonder??

Wise_Analyst - September 1, 2007 03:27 PM (GMT)
Oops, posted at the same time

Quite a few interesting matches today.

Petrova will not find Szavay easy, and in fact is already a break down. I think she'll come through in 3 against the up and coming Hungarian.

Likewise Hingis against Azarenka. The young Belarussian saw off another promising youngster in Cibulkova very easily, and I think she'll upset Hingis today.

The third seed in realistic danger against a young gun is Schynder against Paszek. Schynder has a habit of losing around this stage in Grand Slams, and Paszek showed with her victory over Schiavone (and Dementieva at Wimbledon) that she's not afraid of the more established players. The Austrian to come through in 3.

Chakvetadze vs Mirza and Vaidisova vs Peer could also be intriguing, although I'd tip the higher ranked players to come through in straight sets there. Sharapova and Kuznetsova shouldn't have much trouble against Radwanska and Medina Garrigues, and in the battle of the unseeded players, Kirilenko should topple Vakulenko.

vivahate - September 1, 2007 03:29 PM (GMT)
can someone just kill my thread and we'll continue on Wise's :)

petalp - September 1, 2007 03:39 PM (GMT)
Looks life Wise has already copied his post over here.. might be just a casee of a nice mod merging the 2 threads and deleting one of Wise's posts..

Anyway, Aga has broken back against Sharpie and is leading 3-2.. yay!!

I think that Sharpie will win this, but the match could be a nice taster for things to come from Aga. I think that she is definitely a future top 5 player :)

Pebs - September 1, 2007 03:40 PM (GMT)
Done. You can all continue on this thread :)

I cant see Radwanska doing as poorly as the last two of The Cheats opponents Petalp...

SerenaW19 - September 1, 2007 03:47 PM (GMT)
It's even stevens atm in the Maria match. This is the litmus test for Maria's form not Dellacqua.

I still think Maria will in straights though......

vivahate - September 1, 2007 03:47 PM (GMT)
sharapova's had a few chances to break at 3-all, but Radwanska has come out to play. good stuff from both so far.

MrInvisible - September 1, 2007 03:50 PM (GMT)
Well, Szavay won the first set against Petrova - I've not actually seen Szavay play but I've been keeping tabs on her name since she came through at qualifying (at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon, unless I'm mistaken). Apparently she has quite a big serve. Online scoreboard also suggests that Radwanska v Sharapova is a competitive match.

After some fairly predictable matches in first two rounds, it looks like the ladies singles is finally starting to warm up a bit...

vivahate - September 1, 2007 03:56 PM (GMT)
Radwanski serving for the 1st set

Me neither, chokie..

Aga is acquitting herself well in the match so far.. hopefully this will continue to be the case :)

vivahate - September 1, 2007 04:06 PM (GMT)
well they trade breaks and radwanska takes the set 6-4 :o

MrInvisible - September 1, 2007 04:08 PM (GMT)
Sharapova was looking rushed towards end of that set...double-faults, and scrappy forehands, but full credit to Radwanska for maintaining her level, and pushing Maria hard.

Nice service hold from Radwanska (I'm watching this on British Eurosport, streamed through internet) - she's looking good out there, very composed. Now lets see if Sharapova has a plan b for this match....

mightyjeditribble - September 1, 2007 04:18 PM (GMT)
Sharapova at 30-all in her first service game of the second ... and she holds.

Go Maria! Now would be a good time to put pressure on Radwanska's service ...

mightyjeditribble - September 1, 2007 04:20 PM (GMT)
BP Maria

Deuce

Another BP!

Sharapova breaks!

I'd thought that too.

But I'd take Aga winning the first set as good consolation for being wrong! :D

petalp - September 1, 2007 04:28 PM (GMT)
Exit door beckoning for Nadia Petrova.

Well done Agnes Szavay, winning 6-4 6-4

MrInvisible - September 1, 2007 04:28 PM (GMT)
Meanwhile, its a straight sets win for Szavay, who wins 6-4 6-4 - well done by the young Hungarian - an impressive victory.

SerenaW19 - September 1, 2007 04:31 PM (GMT)
Well Sharapova just about consolidates her service break, Radwanska looking to stay in touch in this set....

petalp - September 1, 2007 04:35 PM (GMT)
Makiri in danger of going out in straight sets too..

vivahate - September 1, 2007 04:37 PM (GMT)
Maria has certainly taken ahold of the 2nd.

That would be a pity ...

Sharapova in a bit of trouble at 15-30 ... now 30-30 ... 40-30 ... deuce ...

mightyjeditribble - September 1, 2007 04:41 PM (GMT)
And Maria finally holds for 5-1.

Disappointing for Radwanska after winning the first set ... it'll be interesting to see how she responds in the third.

mightyjeditribble - September 1, 2007 05:11 PM (GMT)
Maria needs to win three out of the next four games to stay in this :(

petalp - September 1, 2007 05:15 PM (GMT)
Maria's in a dogfight even to hold serve right now!! :o

MissSospanFach - September 1, 2007 05:22 PM (GMT)
Maria two breaks down now and Radwanska serving for the match!

An early exit for the defending champion!

vivahate - September 1, 2007 05:22 PM (GMT)
